Discovering this book was a highlight of an otherwise bad day. It took me a little while to 'get' Chekov. I read some short stories, some in school, others on recommendation from people like Cornel West, those short stories were good, but it was not until I read 'Lady with the Pet Dog' that I truly understood just how good he was and since then I have read many of his other stories and parts of plays. I was not the first person to own my copy of this book, but I will not be fast to give it up.

An excellent portrayal of life in Russia just prior to the revolution, as told through short stories, two plays, and letters.
