Heads up: Potential spoilers for those of you who have not read Books 1-4!
Yet another action-packed story in the Jane True series! In Tempest's Fury, Jane, Anyan, and Blondie are off to England in order for Jane to fulfill her new role as Champion.
The Good
I really enjoyed seeing Jane's transformation, especially after so many stories, into a powerful badass chick. Never lacking in snarky, Jane was still able to realize how important she was in this war and the need for her to step up to the plate and be the Champion that everyone needed her to be. Personally, I loved Jane's goofiness in past installments but loved how the author managed to mature her but at the same time keep her the same awesome character she's always been. Her new-found maturity extended into her new relationship with Anyan as well, but of course her libido was ever present. :D
The Bad
Okay so this isn't really BAD but it fits with my 'headline' theme. :) The one thing that I felt was lacking which obviously couldn't be helped due to location were all the characters from Rockabill! I missed Iris and Nill and Trill and Tracie and Grizzie. There were brief scenes where Jane spoke with them over the phone just to check in but it wasn't the same. Never quite realized what an integral part of the story they were until now. Will definitely look forward to the next installment where I hope they play a bigger role again.
The Ugly
Final page thought: Holy cliffhanger, batman.
Seriously. That shit was brutal. Jaw was on the floor and everything. No I'm not going to tell you so don't ask but holy hell... Just be prepared, that's all I gotta say.
And here I thought that this might be the final installment! No idea why I thought that but that is clearly not the case.

Caution: this novel has a surprise ending, described by many reviewers as a cliff-hanger (though some readers may feel they're not hanging off a cliff but have been dropped all the way down). All the more surprising because the Jane True series, of which this is book #5, has avoided such devices until now.
What this means is (1) if you hate cliff-hangers, you've been warned--don't expect this book to end like the ones before it; (2) you may want to have book #6, Tempest Reborn, ready at hand for immediate relief; and (3) if so, you must avoid looking at the cover blurb or other descriptions of book #6 because they necessarily spoil the surprise of book #5. It's a book reader's quandary.
The action scenes are up to the high standard of this series, and Jane the first-person narrator is lovable as ever, but the story takes place in Britain and France, where Jane, Anyan, and Blondie the Original go as a questing trio to save the world, and the other characters I like stay in Maine and don't have a role here. That was disappointing to me (some familiar enemies do show up, though).
To save the world from what? Why, from the greatest evil that has ever existed, of course--the evil that Blondie defeated several centuries ago, known as the Red and the White, whose remains have been scattered until now, when one of our team's old enemies is intent on gathering them up and resurrecting them.
Blondie, who's known as Cyntaf in Britain, was the champion back then, but that title has passed to Jane along with the champion's weapon, the labrys or double-headed axe (see book cover), thanks to the creature we met in the last book--the one who sleeps beneath the surface of the earth and extends from Maine to the Carolinas. The blurb says it well, I think:
In addition to their main quest to save the world, Jane and Anyan are in the final stretches of their quest to become fully intimate, through many hesitations and interruptions. This is described in graphic detail covering many pages that will delight some readers and, I'm afraid, repel others. I felt the important thing was the development of Jane's relationship with Anyan and her friendship with Blondie, both of which are vital to the plot as it turns out.
Goodreads' ratings are how you feel, and I went through several different feelings reading this book. With some hesitation (absent friends; that ending) I'll settle on 3.5 rounded up, but I have to say that parts of this were splendid.

I'm done and I'm dropping this series.
Trying to finish the book is a challenge for me.
No more reading about Jane's libido VS her virtue.

Jane has headed to Britain along with Anyan and Blondie to try and stop some new/old enemies. Along the way, she gets to spend some much needed time with Anyan, she gets to do some sightseeing and she gets to learn some much needed history on supes and the new/old enemies they are facing. Unfortunately, there is no way to prepare for what ultimately happens.
FRICK and then some....insert some major curse words and then throw in some more!! Yes folks, I'm talking about the ending if you haven't heard by now, this book has a massive one that will leave you reeling. And as much as I hated it and it literally is making me sick to think about it, I love when authors do this so kudos to you, Nicole Peeler. You have just become another author I hate a love/hate relationship with. I've always loved your books but you just blew my socks off!
So the heart of this story is really the heart of the relationship that is Jane and Anyan. We have waited so long for this and boy are we tortured. How many times can a couple get interrupted? But we do get some good romance and we get to know much more about Anyan which only made me love him more. And I love how Jane calls him puppy and he calls her his little minx.
I really think Jane has {mostly} come into her element in this book. She's strong, she has a lot more control over her elemental and she's determined. She does have to do a lot of work with the labrys, her ax, but with Anyan's help, she makes a lot of lead way. I think the main thing she needs work on is her self confidence and believing that she can be who she needs to be.
There are, of course, many new supes we get to know and some small interactions with some prior characters, Ryu included. To be honest, there were almost too many news ones to keep straight and not everyone is as they seem!! I think that was the main reason I knocked it down half a star.
This book is a great addition to the series and it made me crazy knowing something big was going to happen. I had to keep reining in my brain so I could follow along with the story instead of trying to figure things out! And I love NP's writing...she has so many funny lines that seem to come out of left field! Why is May 2013 so far away?? But then again, why is it so close...I really don't want this series to end!
Cover Talk: As usual, this series doesn't have the best covers but they grow on you. I love seeing Jane with her labrys {even if it is a bit little}, Anyan in "puppy" form, a bit of Red and the London eye in the background.

Hmm... no. Sorry, but just no.
Halfway through the book I had already decided it wasn't my favorite of the series, but it was well on its way to a solid 3. Then it came the last chapter. Contrived is the kindest word I can use to describe it.
It's like she tried to pack all the punch that the rest of the story lacked into one "shocking" and "surprising" last chapter. The quotation marks should give you a clue as to how well I think that worked out. I was even chanting in my head "don't go there, don't go there..." over and over as I started reading that part.
Alas, she went there and so now I'm not even a little bit excited about the last book in the series, which is just wrong.
The rest of the story was just OK. I love Nicole Peeler's silly humor, but that can only be the icing on the cake, if you have a good plot then that would make it even better, but you can't build a whole book on one-liners alone. And the plot got old pretty quickly. It goes like this: Jane gets cock-blocked by Blondie with new info about the bad guys, they chase the lead, they investigate and set up an ambush, the ambush fails, Jane gets kidnapped, silly interrogation ensues, Jane gets released and goes swimming, Jane ends up alone with Anyan and things escalate, Jane gets cocked-blocked by Blondie... oops, I already said that, just rinse and repeat for about 4 or 5 times, then the last chapter and that's it.
Maybe I'll get lucky and forget about the events of this book before I make it to the next one. I hope so.

No, Nicole. Nooooooooooooooooo.
I've read your blog and understand the change in direction you felt you had to take but the sudden shock of the ending being so abrupt and cliffhangery meant I couldn't rate this book fairly at all to begin with; but with a few days to cool down I think I've managed.
The writing, events and characters are excellent as usual and the dialogue is wonderful; but the end of it is excruciating, especially as it's unexpected given that all of the books in this series have been self contained till now.
I did love the book, just not the sudden shock of the ending. I still love this series and knowing that the next book is the last, therefore it'll be back to the standard of a book complete in and of itself, relieves me no end.

Jane is still relatively new to the supernatural world, so the last thing she ever expected to be was the Champion, someone chosen above all others to fight the good fight against evil. But sometimes fate likes to play her twisted little game and right now Jane's up to bat. She'd much rather be spending time getting to know the yummy Anyan in their new relationship, but when duty calls, someone has to step up to the plate. Unfortunately getting everyone to follow her won't be easy as she is seen as anything but powerful. Now she has to prove to herself and others that she has what it takes or everything they know will be lost. Failure is not an option.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I was really frustrated with how much focus was placed on Jane and Anyan's relationship rather than the actual action and series plot progression. Actually, the relationship itself wasn't the problem as I am a huge fan of the two of them together. In fact, I have been practically salivating for the two to FINALLY get together. And therein lies the problem. Tempest's Fury continued the trend of Jane and Anyan trying to be together, but anytime they started to even remotely get physical some major event would interrupt them. Then they would "fix" that immediate problem and then try again to be together only to have something else happen to muck things up. The pattern continued like that for most of the book, and after the third time I literally yelled at my book saying "Oh come on already!!" To make matters worse, Jane got the brilliant idea in her head for them to take things slow to get to know what another. What? I mean the past few books haven't been enough really? Build up and tension in a book can be a good thing, especially when it pulls the reader further into the story. However, in this case, I think it was just taken too far to the point where once the gratification finally came, I was so far frustrated that it wasn't really worth all the build up.
So with all the major interruptions between Anyan and Jane, you would think there would have been some major developments in the war. It was more along the lines of run here, stop this bad guy, breathe for an hour then run somewhere else where there was trouble. Basically they were putting out a lot of fires and basically just temporarily band-aiding everything. Honestly that won't work for much longer, which was made incredible apparent by the terrible cliffhanging ending events. However, that being said, at least Jane seems to be making some major headway with her confidence in herself and the role she must play. I just hope that confidence doesn't go a step too far into arrogance, as everything that makes Jane so awesome would be lost.
Even though this installment frustrated me a great deal, I'm still a huge fan of the series. I just absolutely love Jane as she is pretty much guaranteed to double me over in laughter multiple times in each book. I mean the arguments in her head between her virtue and libido are nothing short of hilarious. Aside from the hilarity of Jane, this also series boasts an awesome cast of characters that I have really come to love. So while Tempest's Fury may be a slight road bump in the overall scheme of things, I still have to recommend it for fans of the series.

I'll admit it. I am having serious trouble with this review. All I want to talk about is the ending. I know that's not fair. I can't spoil people. I can't rob them of that feeling I got when Nicole Peeler totally ripped the rug out from under me in the last chapter. Unfortunately, my brain just won't let me move past it. So I must tell you off the bat that the ending to this book is a shocking/ amazing/ horrible punch-in-the-gut cliffhanger. But I won't tell you what it is.
That being said, let's go back to the beginning. The story starts with Jane on a mission to Great Britain to help Blondie deal with a new supernatural threat. Ancient elemental entities similar to the underground creature in the last book, are threatening to make a comeback. And unlike the being that imbued Jane with her new fancy ax, these beings are murderous and fierce. Blondie actually hacked up the Air and Fire beings, also known as the Red Queen and the White King, back in the day --when she was the champion of the magic ax. Their pieces were scattered around the world, but now someone is gathering the pieces to put the monsters back together again. Jane, Anyan, and Blondie have to stop it.
It's a cool story arc. It's fast moving and full of action. It takes unexpected twists and turns and it incorporates some familiar faces from past books. All this while continuing to expand the established world building.
The book is really good. I only had one complaint. That was the ridiculous number of near-sex encounters between Anyan and Jane. I was already stretched to my limit before I started the book. While I appreciate the need and desire to keep sexual tension alive, I was just flat out annoyed with all the stops and starts. The interruptions to their attempts at physical intimacy continue well into this book. And though they do eventually (finally) seal the deal --and it's fantastic, by the way-- I had lost my patience way before that point.
Back to the plus side... I love Anyan. Love. Anyan. We get to know him better as Jane does, both through his actions and through a peek into his history. --Jane continues to be a funny, earnest, and all-around great heroine. She is really growing here, yet she still manages to hold on to the core of who she is. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I have no idea when the next book comes out, which makes me even more of a wreck about the ending. But knowing Nicole Peeler it will be one heck of a series finale. I can't wait to see how she fixes this. Because she must fix it.

The book is really good. I only had one complaint. That was the ridiculous number of near-sex encounters between Anyan and Jane. I was already stretched to my limit before I started the book. While I appreciate the need and desire to keep sexual tension alive, I was just flat out annoyed with all the stops and starts. The interruptions to their attempts at physical intimacy continue well into this book. And though they do eventually (finally) seal the deal --and it's fantastic, by the way-- I had lost my patience way before that point.
Back to the plus side... I love Anyan. Love. Anyan. We get to know him better as Jane does, both through his actions and through a peek into his history. --Jane continues to be a funny, earnest, and all-around great heroine. She is really growing here, yet she still manages to hold on to the core of who she is. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I have no idea when the next book comes out, which makes me even more of a wreck about the ending. But knowing Nicole Peeler it will be one heck of a series finale. I can't wait to see how she fixes this. Because she must fix it.

Moving the plot along makes for an ok relationship build with Jane and her love. They ramble around England in this one, tons happens mixed with not much happening. Its good and cute, though we miss our normal cast of characters since they moved location. Looking forward to the final book. Just a warning, this book ends on a bit of a horrible cliffhanger.

I was sooo looking forward to this book. I waited for it impatiently and when it came I set it aside for a lesser read, wanting to savor the foreknowledge that I would be reading a magnificent book. All the prior Jane True books were so good you just tore right through them. Then I made a BIG mistake. First I read a friends review, which went on to say how she hated the way this book ended, and I couldn't help it-I turned to the last page. I know, I know...shame on me, but what I read there shocked me. I didn't want to read this book anymore but I forced myself. I immediately went to fantasticfiction.com to see if there were more in this series and to my relief I see there are, so I begrudgingly finished the book, even though I read another while I was indeterminate whether to finish it or not. So here's a little bit of what is happening in the life of Jane True.
Half selkie, half human Jane True is on a mission. A mission she did NOT choose! She has been chosen from the supernatural realm to be it's champion and destroy the malevolent rebirth of two of it's most horrendous forces...The Red and the White~dragon shifters with nothing but destruction and domination on their minds. The Red has been reborn, using the body of the former Alfar Queen Morrigan. nNw the search is on for the hidden bones of the White dragon to promote his rebirth. With a ragtag crew of pure-bloods and halflings backing her, Jane runs into nothing but trickery, backstabbing betrayal with each step she takes. And during her quest Jane is trying to find just a small bit of time for herself and her love interest, Anyan, without much luck. This is another series that I started, loved, and then got distracted by other shiny books and wandered away from it for several years. I put it on my list for the Finishing the Series challenge this year and I'm so glad I did. I had forgotten how much I enjoy these books. Peeler's humor is snarky, raunchy, and sometimes juvenile, but I always laugh. The books also make me cry as Peeler has no trouble putting her characters through the wringer or even killing them. The covers are cartoony and the stories can be too but there's also a dark edge. Peeler has taken beings from mythology and folk tales and set them in the modern world. Some are nice, some are evil, many are somewhere in between. However grand the battles and politics may get (and there's lots of both), the stores retain that human edge; they're grounded in the mundane human world.
"Tempest's Fury" is no exception. We get large-scale politics and the homey details of a romance. We get love, anger, hate, joy, and desperation. People and beings who are evil, ones who are doing what they think is right, and a few who are unquestionably good. The stakes have been raised in this story, with the fate of the world, naturally, hanging in the balance. Also, there are dragons. I love dragons. These dragons are not nice, not at all, but oh well, no one's perfect. Jane and her friends and allies are in Europe, trying to save the world but there are some who think that it's none of their business and others who think that the head bad guys have the right idea. There's treachery, loss, and heartbreak but also some delightful scenes and glimpses of love and romance and the possibility of hope.
Jane has grown tremendously over five books. In many ways, she's still the shy, sweet, naive, slightly odd girl next door. But she's also found that she has powers, that's she only partly human, that she's desirable, and that she is physically, emotionally, and supernaturally stronger than she ever dreamed of. Her world has expanded and we've been along for the journey. She has morphed into a true hero, willing to do what has to be done regardless of her terror or the cost. Yet, she's humble, sweet, funny, and compassionate. I can't help but root for her or, when she's being stupid, yell at her. :D

I put the book on hold because I knew it was a cliff hanger, having had it spoiled so that I could make a reasonable choice about whether or not to read it before the final book came out. I'm glad I put it off because it was a rude, manipulative, heinous, insulting cliff hanger - even knowing in advance what it was going to be.
It had no end. None. It just stopped as if she hit her word count and phoned what she had in. It was a massively horrible ending.
But that's not all. The book was BORING. I'm long past thinking the inner dialog with multiple self personalities is cute, it's not cute anymore it's psychotic.
My final gripe? For at least two books the "blossoming romance" has been a long series of cock blocking. It bored me to tears by the end of the first book in which Ms. Peeler used this device. It pissed me off by the end of the second book in which she did it. However, I had been assured that consummation happened in this book and so I went into it expecting that, at least. One consummation happens, near the end. The rest of the book, in terms of the "romance" is a secession of... you guessed it... cock blocking. I'm over it.
At some point I will read the last book in this series so I can get closure. It won't be today because I had to force myself through this book and I don't want to do it with two in a row.
That's the thing, if you write a cliff hanger I am going to back burner your series until it's complete. I can't guarantee I will still have even the slightest interest in your story by the time you finish it.
At the moment I'm not much caring about this ending.

No spoilers and colorful language abound!
I finished this around 11pm and started the next one. This is about where I lose all interest in reviewing this because I've already moved on. One of these days I'll learn to STOP and just start reading something else. One of these days...
This series is just really fun, and engaging but also gentle on the soul and mind.
So true story, if I had started reading this series at any other point in my life I'd hate it. Jane's split personalities, her shameless embrace of all things corny as fuck, the angst. I don't even know where to start discussing all the things about this that is annoying, because they simply aren't to me. Something is deeply wrong here folks, I find it all endearing and humorous. This time of year is always a little hectic for me and it's just fucking nice to read a book that doesn't shred my insides into bits and leave me a weeping ball of pajamas. Not only does it not hold me emotionally hostage and unable to function but it's also very interesting. This world is fantastic and each books exposes a new layer into her world!

I love this series. That said, this particular book disappointed me somewhat.
A big part of what I love about it is how self aware Jane is, particularly how in the early books she realizes that she deserves more even when she's completely wrapped up in Ryu. We're all able to watch Anyan treat her with respect, and see her see it too. It seems like she's lost some of that in this book, though. She worries about whether or not Anyan's feelings towards her have shallow motivations, but her thoughts towards him are almost entirely libido-oriented. It's like she's selectively forgotten the relationship that she'd built with him over the previous four books.
My other objection is that this really reads like 2/3 of a book. Generally, you'll see the characters of the book working to solve some problem on a particular path, and then at about 2/3 of the way through, they encounter a stunning reversal that either redefines or crystallizes the motivations for the problem they're trying to solve. It seems like in this book, that's what happened on the last page. It makes for a good cliffhanger, but an incomplete book.
I'm happy to have read it, it moves the story line along, I'll read the next book to find out how the cliffhanger is resolved. I felt sort of cheated by the experience of reading this particular book.

I have loved every book about the adventures of Jane True, this one might be my favorite so far! As other reviews have said there is a BIG cliffhanger ending, which I usually dont like, but the rest of the story was Soooo good! I love love love Anyan! Jane says she keeps learning new things about him, and so do we, and that just makes both Jane and I love him more! I really think Nicole Peeler is genius. The whole series... The world, the characters and the nail-biting adventures are written so well that I couldnt think of a negitive thing to say if I had to! This series is everything I love about reading, fantasy, adventure, sexy, snarky, AMAZING! I cant type this review without mentioning the cover. One of my favorite things about books are the covers. This series has some of my favorites! Now I will be impatiently waiting for the next book.

I'm speach less, and... I'm awed. This book was everything. It was funny, full packed with adventures, sexy, and... Yeah it's just so perfect to read.
But man, I can't shake that ending off.... I want...no I NEED the next book like right now.

This is the 5th book in the Jane True series. It starts out with Jane on a mission to the UK. She is off to do battle with a supernatural threat. Jane think they will be off Blondie will deal with the problem and it will be like a mini vacation. Easy peasy! Well that would not make a very good story. Turns out Jane is up against the Red and White these ancient elemental's who just want to wreak chaos and take over the world. Also turns out this is not Blondie’s fight but Jane’s.

Meh. SEMI-SPOILER ALERT I'm not a fan of cliff hanger endings. It seems greedy to me. Like "thanks for reading my book, now wait 6 month to buy the next one to see how things resolve" Absolutely nothing resolves in this book. My advice is to wait until the next 1 or 2 come out and read them together. It'll make a better story. I also tired of Jane's constant goofy inner dialogue. I found myself skimming pages at a time, even the more 'steamy' scenes because it just doesn't feel natural.

The Jane True series is absolutely fantastic in my opinion. I have only a few sentences to say about TEMPEST"S FURY. It is safe to say that I am absolutely devastated by how TEMPEST'S FURY ends. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for TEMPEST REBORN to come out and hopefully put my broken heart out of its misery.

I want to stop reading this series as it has really become ridiculous. However, I hate to admit that I do kind of still care about the main characters, so I'm going to keep going. At least the author used the word "libido" less in this book than the last one. This time it was "only" 32 times.

Why have my favorite books this year all been the hardest for me to review? This one is just too hard. The best I can do is to say that as usual for Dr. Peeler's books, it had great adventure, lots of new-to-me mythology and a lot of heart.
