(Actually read the whole book)
This had better be the first of a series because it left me hanging! I am very thankful for likeable characters...but the bad guy, Perrine, is beyond awful. This book will make you want to build the wall, except it should be around the entire country.

This book caught my eye first of all b/c it was on a discounted book shelf ... AND b/c I saw that the story took place in New York City as well as north of NYC in Orange County and specifically Newburgh, NY. We lived in New York City in the Bronx for almost 5 years and in Orange County north of NYC for more than 20 years ! I was intrigued !
Michael Bennett is a NYPD cop who helps arrest a notorious Mexican cartel drug lord who is doing business as far northeast as New York. As a result of the arrest, people he cares about and loves are murdered or threatened. He is a widower and in an attempt to protect his family he takes his father and his children's nanny out of the city to a vacation cabin in the Catskill Mountains near Newburgh, NY ... and ah, yes !! ... this is a beautiful area of New York. It turns out that his two older boys, however, have a run-in with a Newburgh gang and almost get themselves killed. Michael Bennett finds that his idea of a quiet idyllic vacation spot in the country presents himself with more excitement and mayhem than he possibly could have imagined ... the book weaves two story lines in which Bennett is involved in helping the city of Newburgh police dept. clean up their city of drugs and gangs as well as testifying in the upcoming trial of the Mexican cartel drug lord. Both predicaments involve lots of high power adventure.
The thing that was so fun for me was that almost all of the places he talks about in the book are places that I am familiar with ! The city of Newburgh, NY is indeed in the struggle of its life to keep that city from being controlled by warring gangs. Before we moved from NY a year and a half ago, I worked in a pharmacy that delivered drugs for hospice. Our guys had to take hard core narcotics into some of those highly dangerous neighborhoods on many occasions. They took unmarked cars and one time asked for a police escort into the neighborhood ... they were denied as the cops told them, "We never go in that neighborhood unless there's been a murder." Go figure !

Loved it. Just didn't like the way it ended. The author just left us hanging there waiting for next exciting moment, then.... That's it , over. Now we have to wait months to see what happens. I'm currently reading " ZOO" , I will say it's good, definetly worth the read , but it sure ain't no Michael Bennet , or Alex Cross book.

Still as addictive as always

I like the short chapters. I'm a school bus driver, in between routes I read. Shorter chapters make it easy to put down without feeling like you're missing something. I became addicted with Michael Bennett last year, and have not found one I don't like.

Great job James!

I like this kind of story. Too bad James Patterson didn't write it himself. Must be nice to have others do your work and be able to put your name on it to make more money.
Maybe I can do this some day.

LOVED THIS ONE! Some of Patterson's books are not as believable - but I love Michael Bennett and his kids and this story was super.

This is my first James Patterson book. It was very good with lots of twists and turns. And, was there just a wee bit of sex, yes, almost.
