Have you ever wondered about the geography of lost ancient civilizations such as Atlantis? If you enjoy geography, legends about ancient civilizations or history, this is a fascinating book. I knew little to nothing about Lemuria and Mu and the other civilizations talked about, so that alone made this an interesting read for me.

Atlantis is possibly the most widely known lost civilization. Speculation has abounded throughout the years about where it was, how it disappeared, and what it's society was like. This book offers various theories and ideas about all of that, as well as cultural aspects of the civilization.

Lemuria was, for a time, believed to be a continent between the southern tip of India and Africa. It was called that to account for a belief that that continent was a bridge of sorts for the lemurs, which is why they can be found in Madagascar, and India, but not Africa. It was also, at one point thought to be the ancestral home of mankind. These theories have been disproven, but it was still intriguing to read about how they came about and people's justifications for them.

Mu was thought to exist in the Pacific ocean, before it too sank beneath the waves. The theory was popularized in the late 1800's early 1900's based on the idea that civilizations in the Yucatan area were far older then even Greece or Egypt, and not only did the Yucatan people's sacred books tell the story of an older continent, but refugees from that continent founded the civilizations of places like Greece and Egypt. Again, these theories have been shown to be false, but it makes for enjoyable reading.

Other lost civilizations were covered, somewhat less extensively. However, the entire book was interesting and very entertaining.

This is a decent introduction to the Atlantis concept and overview of the various alternatives for Atlantis and other lost civilizations. I recommend this for a fantasy writer's bookshelf.
