Years ago my husband and I took the Coast Starlight train from San Luis Obispo, CA to Seattle, WA.
We read this book together, out loud to each other as part of our trip. We had our own private cabin, so there was nobody to disturb, and it was rather a romantic reading experience for the two of us.
As a side note, if you have never taken this train, I recommend it highly. The coast is beautiful, and the train is one of the most delightful ways of travel. Sitting with different eating partners along the trip is also a joyous part of the traveling experience.
Onto the review...
Premise: Disillusioned journalist Tom Langdon must get from Washington DC to LA in time for Christmas. Forced to travel by train (too bad he sees it that way), he doesn't know what he is in for on this trip!
First, I am not surprised he ran into so many amusing characters. If you have ever travelled down the halls of any train, it is always amazing to see how many people are sitting around dozing, talking, playing games, or into their phones or computers while languishing away the time. Lots and lots of people.
And second, as a journalist, I wouldn't be surprised that he would want to start conversations. After all, he wants to know their story.
And then he sees Eleanor (Ellie), a woman from his past.
And why not have a bit of romance. Of course, my husband and I were all into romance when we were reading it, so we were cheering for Tom and Ellie.
To be honest, I picked up this book for two reasons.
1) because it was Baldacci. And I was a fan of his mysteries. I knew it wasn't going to be a mystery (although there is a reveal within this story), but it was Baldacci and I like his writing.
And...
2) because my husband and I were taking a train trip, and I thought this would be a perfect book for us to read together.
I think I got what I wanted. Actually, no... I truly got what I wanted. 🎄
