MI5 agent Jane Nichols is charged with the covert rescue of an MP's grandson who has been kidnapped. For Jane's expert team, this should be easy - until she learns that the kidnapping has something to do with the murder of her own parents.
Tan is the author of numerous articles, four fiction novels, and several short stories.
She is a consultant specializing in the science/technology and healthcare fields. Before beginning her consulting practice, she worked for the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and also served as a Public Affairs Officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
I really enjoyed this series and wish that she had continued with it. 10 years after this book was published (#2), I still look to see if she has published another book in series.
This is the second book in the Jane Nichols' series by Maureen Tan. Jane is a semi-retired MI-5 agent and full time author of a successful hardboiled detective series. The first book in the series, AKA Jane, the us introduced us to Jane, a female version of James Bond, who demonstrates an enviable array of skills from chasing terrorists and racing headlong into bullet blazing scenarios with the same level of proficiency she employs infiltrating espionage rings. In addition to Jane's hardened professional side we also see her inner struggle to come to terms with the emotional damage from both working as an MI-5 agent as well as her personal life. In the second book, Jane has been seriously injured in a mission that invokes traumatic memories of her childhood. After her apartment is firebombed she's left vulnerable, targeted by an assassin and unsure who she can trust. She needs a safe haven to heal, both physically and emotionally and finds herself returning to Savannah and the arms of her former lover the chief of police, Alex Callaghan. Alex is struggling with his own demons, both real and emotional. The storyline is rich and jam packed, with Jane and Alex juggling their personal ghosts, their physical healing, the threats and attacks that come fast and furious and all the while gingerly finding their footing in the new relationship. Tan has once again knocked it out of the ballpark. She continues to weave Jane's story of heart pumping action which uses all of Jane's masterful expertise in the art of spy craft, but also sharing her softer and more human side that is dealing with past trauma, fear of trusting and losing those she loves. She creates an environment that is filled with action, intrigue and lifelike characters to produce a' can't put it down' and 'can't wait to pick it' work.
If you've read AKA Jane than you know the back-story of this character. I didn't. In Run Jane Run, Jane is living in Savannah, Ga. with Alex, her lover who is the Chief of Police. To the people in the town, she is a relatively successful novelist. However, her real occupation is as an agent for MI5, British Secret Service. Upon learning that Alex has been a victim of a drive-by shooting, Jane is called his hospital bedside. Before he has completely recovered, she receives a call telling her she must return to London for an assignment. As she considers her feelings for Alex, she knows that getting too close to anyone only leads to heartbreak. Memories of her dead parents and of a man she once loved who was killed, keep her from giving herself completely to her lover. The morning after receiving the call and after telling him she probably won't see him ever again, she boards a flight to London.
Her assignment seems simple enough, and while the mission is successful, she is badly wounded. Jane finds herself on the run. She returns to Savannah, where she feels safe, as few people know of this part of her life. Not only will this allow her time to heal from her injuries, but it will also give her time to her to help Alex who is still being threatened. He, in turn, attempts to help Jane discover the truth about her parents' murder.
The novel is a fast-paced page-turner; a complex plot that keeps the reader on edge; with likable characters, and a surprise and satisfying ending. Though I haven't yet read Tan's first book, AKA Jane, it mattered little to my being able to enjoy her second book. I look forward to reading her first in which Jane is introduced.
I really did like this duo of AKA JANE and RUN JANE RUN. As a reader I would like to read more, but this one ended with such closure that I think this is it, which is actually kind of a pleasant change from other series which I also enjoy but never have any change or growth in the characters (I'm looking at you, Stephanie Plum - I like the series, but it's kind of "play, stop, rewind" with ever book).
Jane reunites and makes up with Alex her cop boyfriend. A new mission sends her down a rabbit hole which reveals the reason her parents were murdered. Flashbacks to that help Jane realize that her best friend and fellow agent, John, might have something to do with the night that changed her life forever.
It's been 14 years and I still remember the story vividly. I think Ill read this series again to see how my tastes have changed.

The author does not seem to know what she wants to write about, so she comes up with a plot involving an MI-5 "super agent" who is so good she only takes assignments that she wants. While not "working" she lives in Georgia, USA, with her cop boyfriend and writes novels about a Mike Hammer like Chicago PI.
Plots on both sides of the Atlantic, and we are even subjected to snippets of the novel that she is writing.
