Out of the two that i’ve read, I’d say that I like Inferno better because of its morbidity. However, I feel that Purgatory and Inferno are the same quality wise. Purgatory had some interesting ideas, such as how Virgil argued that love is the root of all things good and evil. However, I definitely missed a lot and should probably reread because I am not a literary scholar lol
I grew up with this edition and had no idea how lucky I was for Dorothy L. Sayers’ translation to be my childhood introduction to the comedy. So, there’s this Mark dude, and oh man, I picked up his translation of purgatory while on the road (I logically understood it would be different but didn’t think it could be that bad) to show someone and I wouldn’t let them look at it bc man, how embarrassing for anyone to think that was the writing I based my whole identity off of. Googling Dorothy L. Sayers for the first time was a crazy ride and she’s just honestly the best, one of the most incredible writers - read her translation of Purgatorio.
