COLLEEN L. REECE writes under the pen name Connie Loraine and is one of Heartsong's most popular authors. Colleen learned to read beneath the rays of a kerosene lamp. The kitchen, dining room, and her bedroom in her home near the small logging town of Darrington, Washington, were once a one-room schoolhouse where her mother taught all eight grades! An abundance of love for God outweighed the lack of electricity or running water and provided the basis for many of Colleen's 140+ books.

Her rigid "refuse to compromise" stance has helped sell more than 6 million copies that help spread the good news of repentance, forgiveness, and salvation through Christ. Colleen helped launch Barbour Publishing's Romance Reader flip books, the American Adventure series, and her own Juli Scott Super Sleuth Christian teen mystery series. In 1998 Colleen was inducted into the HeartSong Hall of Fame in recognition for her contribution to Heartsong's success.

Brian O'Rourke had a good life from infancy in Ireland until the famine hit so many people. His stomach was always empty and people were mean to one another. Finally he decided to sneak aboard a ship bound for America. He was found after they were out to sea and was taken to the captain. Captain Haines became for Brian a second father and so Brian learned from him during the next part of his life on the sea.
When Brian decided to settle near Seattle he became a logger and made a new life with work and friends. Harry Templeton became like a brother to Brian and together they fixed up a cabin in preparation for the arrival of Harry's fiance.
Meanwhile, Heather Templeton endured life with her father and stepmother, Adelaide. Harry had previously been sent away by his stepmother and Heather was left to Adelaide's deceitfulness. Though mean to Heather when they were alone, when Mr. Templeton was in the room Adelaide was all sweetness so he was unaware of his wife's true personality and wickedness. Heather's best friend, Alice, visited often and the girls shared jokes and secrets in Heather's room. It was there that they planned an escape to Seattle. But the outcome was uncertain. It was most daring of them to even consider. Women in the mid 1800s didn't do these things. But plan they did and even involved the help of some of the household servants. Heather would miss her father and risk losing her inheritance but another day with Adelaide was not an option, either.

I am a hopeless romantic so of course I fell for this collection of stories.

It's funny though because I know the author and she's this little old, gray-haired lady. For some reason when you read any of her books you don't get that impression.

Colleen is a great person. I really enjoyed visiting with her and getting advice about writing my own stories. Her books are amazing. Everybody should check them out. :D

The first two stories were a whole lot of rainbows and unicorns. The history was interesting, but if I had tried to read this all at a go, it would have ended as a DNF. I had to put the book aside for a couple days between stories. The last two stories were more drama/angsty and saved the collection. Completely different and more to my taste, apparently. Less history and more far-fetched occurrences, but more tolerable. I wouldn’t pass up another book by Colleen Reece if it comes through our circle of book-sharing friends, but I’m not likely to seek her out either.

Dreamy, romantic, heartwarming, and wholesome! The type of book you would read while snuggled up by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate. Loved it.

Totally enjoyed these four lovely stories! They flowed together, yet all but one could have been read as a stand alone. The stories were well written & very entertaining ... I actually had a hard time putting the book down. Really good Christian fiction!

Boring. Virtually no romance in any of the stories, and in one, the hero and heroine 'fell in love' despite never actually having had a proper conversation.
