Dollars, rise up!! When Yagiri Pharmaceuticals crosses the line, the true leader of the Dollars steps forward to take command of the vast network of members at his disposal…Though this unobtrusive boy holds a disturbing degree of power in the palm of his hand, Celty is preoccupied by the powers that still control her head…At the end of the day, will her twenty-year search all be for naught? Or has she found something even more precious along the way?
Very fun series. Everything wraps up with this book, and while I was unsure that the story could be told well in only four volumes, I think that Narita and crew did a pretty good job of it! And it's interesting watching the anime and reading the manga at the same time--there are quite a few differences, so even though they're essentially telling the same story, they sometimes feel like they aren't. I'll definitely plan on reading the novel at some point as well.
Sudden plottwist of Mikado being the founder of Dollars was shocking and not shocking at all. Even though we barely had any clues who founded Dollars, it was kinda obvious when you connected Mikado's reaction to learning about Dollars and the fact that Dollars's founder doesn't live in Ikebukuro. The fact Mikado was so "normal" and "unrelated" was also suspicious. I liked this volume, great ending to the arc.

So this is the end of the Durarara!! manga . . . well, until the Saika Arc, at least. Which is good, because I'm starting to prefer the manga over the anime in terms of focus and linear storytelling. Plus, it has much more Celty – and more Celty is always a plus in my book! Speaking of which, Durarara!!'s most recent plot arcs come to manageable and meaningful conclusions in volume four, creating a satisfactory end as well as a hook into the next story arc (the first volume of which is already available in English!).
Holy craaaaaap! I have become obsessed with this series in a very short amount of time. Apparently there are "light novels" that were actually published first, so now begins my internal debate of which to do first: finish reading all the manga arcs (extremely tempting), watch the anime to see the characters in awesome action (also extremely tempting), or read the original novels and get a handle on the whole story (would they tell more of a story than the manga...? I'm not sure what "light novel" is supposed to mean.). So, give me a day or so to fight amongst myself, and then one of the options will be chosen and I will again be in internal bliss (while also freaking out all the awesome-ness that is this series so far). I definitely recommend it to people who like Tokyo Ghoul, Corpse Party, Black Butler, etc. (Although, so far it's not as "gruesome" as those seem to be... But dark enough!)
This is another solid volume. We get secrets about nearly everybody in this one, revelations about Celty, her head, the young woman it seems to be attached to, the dollars, and nearly everyone else. The story continues fascinating without quite fitting any of the manga stereotypes for repeated cliched battles or cheesy/comedic romance.
Always thought of this series as one without a major plot running through but always an underlying premise and it always fascinated me and still does to this day. This Volume Was rather cool and I'm looking forward to seeing how this continues
Tried to describe this series to my partner and came up with "it doesn't really have a plot, stuff just happens and it's weird and crazy and a wild ride". Also I forgot it takes place over literally 3 days. Insanity.
In reading a manga series for the first time in more than a decade, I'm reminded why I don't like manga. It's not a format that agrees with my temperament. I can never get a hang of the pacing; naturally I'll burn through an entire "book" cover-to-cover in an hour without retaining anything, or I can force myself to slow down through it so I can experience the bored, pained feeling of scratching my chin and pretending to appreciate the details of a painting in an art museum— and that's only if I can truly figure out which order to read the damn panels in in the first place.
That said, Durarara (the Manga!) benefits from being Durarara. It's a joy to read as it is to watch. If this is a series thats primary strength is characterization (yes), then undoubtedly the main character is the city itself. This is a series that sets itself apart with an incredible sense of place. I know Tokyo, and particularly Ikebukuro, as well as anyone can know a place they've never been to, and the joy of seeing a spectacular setting conveyed so spectacularly is unbridled. It's certainly not the best fictional recreation of a place that's been made, but it's definitely the best fictional recreation of Ikebukuro, and for me, that's unparalleled.
The fourth and last volume of Durarara was a bit of a wrap up. It felt a little rushed and honestly I felt like it could have been a longer series. I really would love to see if Celty is ever reunited with her head and what happens with the rest of the characters. I know that there is already a spinoff series that I will have to look into, but it doesn't seem to involve Celty, who is by far the most fascinating character of the series.
This volume was a bit of a cop-out, with limited action, some weird wrap-ups and an overall awkwardness that really did not tie everything in a neat little bow like it was supposed to. Beyond that, I did enjoy the illustrations, the variety of characters but I felt the overall plot was a bit of a flop, or maybe I am just too Western to understand it.
I will definitely be looking into the spinoff series and hope for some questions to be answered. I think there is also an anime series and maybe that delves a little more into Celty's background. I'll have to look into both as I did enjoy it enough, just felt like it wrapped up too soon.
There is a lot more backstory with Celty and Yagiri Pharmaceuticals in this one.
I cannot stand Shinra Kishitani. I hate him for what he's done to Celty. While I understand what he's done is out of his "love" and fear of her leaving- he is deplorable and I don't think I could ever remotely like him. He deserves to be hurt more.
We get to know more of Izaya Orihara's involvement with Mikado Ryugamine and the growth of the Dollars. On a side note, Mikado Ryugamine is kinda messed up (I mean it's already been acknowledged with his excitement towards these situations) but him condoning the relationship/love of Seiji and Mika Harima was messed up; Mika is a stalker and Seiji is a would be murderer- let's not down play this just because they "love" each-other.
Izaya is seriously messed up. And Celty's sentiment at the end is quite cute/nice!
Ok. This review is going to cover this entire series so far. I sat down and binge read all 4 in the course of 2 days.
I'd heard of this series on a couple of sites but at first hadn't been sure it was for me. Oh how wrong I was. Awesome story. Very strange but addictive storyline. I couldn't stop wanting to know what happened yet. I loved the characters. I would have read all of them in a single day if real life hadn't interfered with class, homework, and work.
I don't want to give away the story for anyone who hasn't read it so I'll just say this. If you life some urban fantasy story lines with compelling characters with twisty motivations, this is for you.
Final volume of the first arc is a disappointment compared to the original novel and the anime adaptation. While in the other versions the climax of the story is pure chaos as the various characters come together for the final conflict, the way it's presented here is just random. When Seiji pops up, or when Celty dives off the roof, the events don't feel connected to everything else that's going on. The story's still good, but it could've been done a lot better.
the conclusion to the main story worked really well for me, but some of the wind down felt a little disconnected and I wasn't quite sure what to make of some of it - how surprised I was supposed to be I guess. Some of the wrapup just seemed sort of meh. Still, an overall fun series and a solid ending.
The only reason I ended up reading this series is because, at one point in the past, I absolutely loved the anime. Not so much anymore since I kind of watched it so many times, it eventually just seemed pretty meh to me. Kind of like how I’ve always felt for this series as a manga; it’s just meh.
Saya kira manga Durarara!! masih lanjut, tau-tau pas saya baca vol. 4 ternyata udah tamat. Walau agak sedikit beda sama anime-nya (saya tertarik gara-gara nonton anime-nya lol), tapi gak melenceng dari cerita aslinya kok :D
Semoga light novel-nya bisa masuk dan rilis di Indonesia XD
Good conclusion to this adaptation of the first book. From what I understand, the second book is being adapted in a separated series, which I'm definitely going to read at some point in the future.
Este me había gustado más que otros mangas que leí medio sin querer por esas épocas. Lástima que le debe haber ido mal en España porque nunca se editó en Argentina.
