Me, I'm a zombie, a "Magikewl Girl," and I have a thing for pigtails, man.
Ayumu Aikawa is settling into his new life--or lack thereof--and enjoying the ties he's building with his new roommates, strange though they may be! But when the opportunity arises to face his murderer, will this zombie/magikewl girl be up to the task??
Another hilarious volume with plenty of humour, action, magical girls, and more. I really enjoyed seeing more of the characters and learning more about them, and also meeting more characters and having a revelation (that I saw FAR FAR away) that made for some fun things. Of course, obligatory beach episode along with a fun food contest. And there is plenty more in this volume! I laughed a lot, shook my head at some of the perverted jokes (and maybe got a tad tired of Ayumu constantly staring at boobs). The art is really nice. On to the next volume!
Just to get things out of the way, this is one of the few Mature rated Manga I have seen on the market. So if you think the cute characters on the cover will make this manga appropriate for your kids...well now is as good a time as any to learn not to judge a book by its cover. This book not only deals with death of the murder variety but also has moments of lecherousness like when one of the Megalos attempts to strip the Loli Haruna before Ayumu saves her. So do the younger generation a favor and don't buy them this book.
The second volume of "Is This a Zombie" picks up with a watchman from the underworld (who happens to look like a Doberman Pincer in an old fashioned detective uniform) discusses why he came to the house and that if he knew it was Eu that summoned the soul back into the world that it would have saved him a trip. Needles to say he has business elsewhere and Ayumu joins him as they study a grisly murder scene (Which we don't get to see in any real detail) which might be related to the same person that killed Ayumu initially. Now, I am not going to tell you who the killer is but I can tell you one thing for sure. With all the characters that have already been introduced so far in the series I can assure you the killer is among them like a great detective story without the need of real clues you get to find out who he or she is simply by watching her attempt to kill Ayuma once more. He gets the point and you get the plot handed to you on a silver platter.
We also get to see Eu as a magikewl girl whom I found myself liking more then the other characters so far in the series. She is not completely emotionless but she knows how to play it cool so she does not accidentally hurt someone with her words (which appear to be a kind of Kotodama like power affecting everyone that hears her.) We also get a look at Dai Sensei who is Haruna's magikewl teacher (you would think being small girl like person was a requirement since the teacher looks as young if not younger then even Haruna.)
Of course for those of you that want to buy this book for something slightly naughty there is a quick scene of Seraphim drinking a little of Eu's blood to keep herself alive, a whole random scene where everyone (including the vampire ninja) goes to the beach, a part where Ayumu get's his hands on real working x-ray glasses, and more parts that shouldn't be able to fit in this little book with a slowly expanding story.
Given a choice I would say my favorite part of the book would have to be when Dai sensei makes her appearance and stops Ayumu from delivering the final blow to the person responsible for all of the recent murders including his own. There is something about her as a character that makes her seem bubbly but you can see something different in her eyes when she gets serious. I can't say much more about this point or you might be clued in on who the murderer is. :)
Ayumu's murderer is revealed, and it's who you'd expect it to be. Unfortunately it fulfills D.M.'s Beach rule of anime and manga: the sooner we get to the beach episode, the more out of gas the anime or manga is. So we get a beach episode in the second volume of the manga, which is never a good sign. It still doesn't beat Yumeria, which had one in the third episode, but it comes close.
There's a little more action in this volume, but it really wont change your mind from the first book. Disposable silly fun.
This is quite possibly the most confusing manga I have ever had the misfortune to try and read. It was a mess from beginning to end and if I could give it a 0 star rating, I would.
