Florence is a play I read for my French 20 class. Florence is the most immature, annoying, naive, frustrating character I have ever witnessed. After watching the ancient movie production of Florence, this sentiment is re-enforced. None of the characters had any sense of depth, and the discussions about life are surface level and rather thoughtlessly boring. It’s over dramatic at some points, and absolutely skin-crawlingly disgusting at some points (namely Florence sleeping with her boss and then saying she wants to die because of it). I didn’t know wether to pity her or be annoyed at her naivety for going with him. Ugh.
This is the definition of a mediocre story with mediocre characters and an unclear conclusion. I came away from this entirely confused and the same. Usually books assigned in school have some sort of lesson attached but this just has a lot of yelling and reeks of needing therapy. Also Eddy sucks and I do not like him nor see how anyone could.
This Québécois play discusses feminism and the role of women in the 60s. I enjoyed most of the characters: Florence who tries to become independent, Eddy who’s a womanizer and who lives by the hedonism ideology, and Pierre who gets to go to CEGEP while his sister Florence can’t and has to pay part of his tuition. While I liked the characters, I didn’t enjoy the story as a whole; there was something missing in my opinion.
The relationship between Florence and Eddy is frankly discussing. I was enjoying this play until that happened. I had to read it for my Fla 20 class but I’d previously read Zone and that was really good and had actually wanted to read this. Don’t wast your time on this play. If you want read a Québécois play go for Zone instead
Read for french class, doesn’t really count as a book it’s a play but i’m in desperate need for books to reach my goal this year 🤞🏼 Florence shoukd have dropped Eddy so early into the play and that’s my only take
Read this play with my Grade 12 French class. It’s a good text to discuss themes of liberty and gender roles. However, some of the characters were just awful and never showed growth.
I really actually enjoyed this play. In the copy I read Dubé started it off by saying that Florence’s story was nothing extraordinary or uncommon, but that the tales of normal, common women still deserve to be told. The play is short and a super quick read, the French is simple and a good start for someone not as well versed in the language.
The story starts with the poor 22 year old secretary Florence Lemieux and her big dreams of a better life. In search of an interesting better life she breaks things off with her boring fiancé and starts an affair with her much older boss who’s often flirted with her and whom she believes to be in love with her. Much conflict ensues. I really enjoyed the insight that Florence’s story gave into what it was like to be a poor, disadvantaged young woman in Quebec without much hope of changing her social status. I think the themes of growing up, womanhood and poverty are all still very relevant today and Florence showcases them well.
Florence does make undeniably stupid decisions that make little sense, but she’s a young girl with no real life experience, and this is the story of her learning and growth. With that context I think that Florence becomes an understandable and sympathetic heroine that many women and perhaps men would be able to relate to.
My favourite work of Dubé’s by far, would highly recommend. 5/5
A little play about a young woman who wants to escape the old-fashioned expectations of her family and learn to stand up for what she wants in life. It covers the unfortunate injustice of gender inequality and Florence's lack of worldly knowledge growing up.
