Ah, Yotsuba&!, Vol. 11 is so bittersweet for a couple of reasons. Usually, Yotsuba has me crying from laughing so much, but for the first time in the series I nearly shed tears of sadness. The majority of this volume will make you laugh, but be prepared to feel like you've been socked in the gut towards the end. Also, I've now caught up with all of the volumes in the series and will have to wait almost half a year for the next volume's release. *shudders* AL.READ.Y. HAV.ING. WITH.DRAW.ALS.

This series holds a special place in my heart. It's helped me keep sight of the light through some very dark times. I will miss Yotsuba's wild antics and the joy she brings with her goofiness. Thank you, Kiyhohiko Azuma, for allowing us to escape the craziness of life and relive the innocence of childhood.

Yotsuba&!, Vol. 11
Chapter 70: Yotsuba & Udon!
Chapter 71: Yotsuba & Pizza!
Chapter 72: Yotsuba & Bubbles!
Chapter 73: Yotsuba & Chestnuts Picking!

Chapter 75: Yotsuba & Friends!
Chapter 76: Yotsuba & . . . . . !

This time the early chapters were more episodic than usual, I thought. The first one wasn't even particularly funny, but very life-like: Yotsuba lost her way in the neighbourhood, comes across a small family-run udon restaurant and peers in the window to see an old man hand-making udon noodles. And she goes in and badgers the people to look on (a nice wink at the audience was her rhapsodising about supermarket udon noodles and the noodle maker carefully not reacting to her). When asked she's quite willing to show her address on a piece of paper and her dad has to come and take her home.

In the second chapter Yotsuba and her dad order Pizza and it takes a long time to come and then they eat it and Yotsuba has never eaten it before. The fun lies in showing all the waiting bits in between. Azuma can really draw people in weird positions anatomically correctly. Considering he doesn't use a super-realistic manga style that's pretty cool, I think.

The next chapter is Yotsuba and soap bubbles: Jumbo and dad are involved, but actually her dearest enemy Yanda has bought all kinds of amazing bubble-making tools and all of them play with them outside in the park (because it gets really soapy indoors fast), with no feelings of self-consciousness whatsoever.

And then Yotsuba gets taken on a chestnut-collecting trip for the first time. The biggest thing are the worms in the chestnut.

The last few chapters are all interconnected however (well actually the chestnuts show up in the last chapter, too), Yotsuba gets her own beginners camera and takes pictures. In her exploration of the neighbourhood it's hilarious how many of the grown-ups are quite willing to do the stupidest poses when asked by her. But when she shows Miura her new camera, they come across a big dog behind a fence on their way back to Yotsuba's house and Yotsuba manages to have the dog snatch her teddy Jourlamin from her (because she basically teases it).

The scene of how she gets Jourlamin back (Miura is too scared of the dog herself) is brilliant, but then the dog stinks. And the girls decide to wash the teddy - and then it doesn't speak any more... The portrayal of Yotsuba's real grief and her eventual enjoyment of being really, really sad is so well done - I remember these emotions being so intense but also enjoyable myself at that age.

And the teddy is healed at the end, no worries ^^

Yotsuba learns of loss with Juralumin, but she doesn't quite understand the difference between visiting a sick person and a dead person. It's very odd seeing Yotsuba sad, but I'm happy everything turned out alright ^^

In ep74, Yotsuba finally got a own's camera. She enjoy it, and take many photos. That was heartwarming scene for me.

I truly truly truly adore this series

it is amazing how much love and fondness is shown b/w these characters - watching the adults let go and be the biggest goofs just to make the neighborhood kids happy is always enough to make me emotional

Yotsuba had me tearing up when she was depressed about her teddy bear being damaged. Sounds crazy but it was hard for me to see her so down. 😭

You're not a real Yotsubro if the thought of losing a real one like Juralumin didn't have you flipping pages like a madman. Asagi MVP

Yotsuba never seems to disappoint. I'm not much of a laugher, but this volume had me laughing out loud at several moments... in public. Sometimes all it takes is something as simple as Yotsuba's reaction to something. Truly an enjoyable series, and another excellent volume. It didn't have much in the way of stories that needed explanation of past volumes. Outside of a reference to Danbo, and no introductions to the existing characters, this would be a fine volume to pick up, even for people new to the series. This series proves that you can still have a wholesome, light series provide big laughs and a fun read.

Another chapter of Yotsuba! YAY! Yotsuba is older now and she gets more mature but she's still a child at heart. I love her and i can relate to her because no matter how old I get, I know I'll still have this childish side to me that gets me going. Society is very corrupt now and this book helps me get back to the pure, innocent times where childhood is all about learning, discovering and experimenting. This book is great for anyone and for me it's just an addiction :)

Review for both #s 11 and 12: 4 stars because I was tired and lazy as I read them, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I normally would've, but I still really enjoyed them. And an extra star for if I wasn't in that state. 5 stars!! ;)

reread 2018: Definitely 5 stars this time. When in need of a laugh, just let that little green-haired girl to the job for you. ;)

Man, I love this series. Any time I'm feeling down, or have just plain read too many serious, dramatic books, the hilarious adventures of this little green haired girl never fails to brighten my day!

This is a review of the entire series!

Yotsuba is an adventurous, green-haired and wide-eyed five-year-old girl moving into a new town with her father. Her energy is off the charts and her curiosity about anything and everything is never satisfied. The daily adventures of Yotsuba and her neighbors turned best pals tackle every subject imaginable from learning to ride bikes, selling flowers, racing at the beach and finding ways to battle against environmental pollution; all the while driving each other crazy and learning to love each others company.

I've been dealing with a lot of stress and depression in my personal life lately, so I thought it would be a nice change of pace to read something funny, cute and wholesome for a change. I went into this series expecting it to be corny or cringeworthy compared to what I'm used to, but was surprised by how genuinely charming, hilarious and heartwarming it is. You can tell the author has a lot of experience being a parent as he captures all the specific mannerisms, speech patterns and chaotic behavior of curious little kids better than most stories I've ever watched or read. Sometimes she's funny and sweet, sometimes she's bratty and annoying, sometimes she's an incoherent babbler that fascinates everyone around her with her insanely creative ideas and the unpredictably wacky shenanigans she constantly cooks up.

All the characters are lovable, each chapter is a fun self-contained story and it has the perfect balance of comedy, adventure and wholesome familial bonding. Yotsuba is a wonderful character. Her mischievous curiosity and her chaotic positive energy are dangerously infectious, both to the reader and to everyone's lives she becomes a part of. I definitely felt cheered up every time I read a chapter from this series and was surprised to find myself constantly smiling and laughing. I think it's impossible to read this manga and not feel uplifted in one way or another.

Yotsuba's curiosity makes her visit a kitchen at a restaurant and sees the making of Udon. Yostuba and her daddy try pizza.

Yotsuba gets her own camera and she is pretty good at taking pictures - though it seems like she is fond of taking pictures of foot. She learns the lesson of not taking photos without someone's permission.

What I really loved about this volume was how she remembers all her friends - daddy (obvious), Ena, Ena's friend, Fuuka, Fuuka's friend, Asagi, Jambo, people at Udon restaurant and the person at the cycle shop (asks him for a cool pose and tells him later that his pose was not so cool :P ) . Sorry, Yanda, you are still not there.

Bubble episode with Yanda was really funny. It seems Yanda is trying to be friends with her but still teasing her. The following episode when Yostuba, her daddy and Jambo hide when they see Yanda. The funniest part is when Yanda also hides and Jambo asks to be found. :D

To compensate for all the laughter, Yostuba is depressed when Duralumin is bitten by a dog, though washed and dried loses his voice. But Asagi to the rescue - Duralumin is back full and fit.

In this collection, Yotsuba wanders down to the Udon restaurant by herself, Yotsuba eats pizza for the first time, Yanda finally finds a way to make a little peace with Yotsuba through bubbles, Yotsuba goes chestnut picking with Fuuka and Fuuka's friend, Yotsuba gets her own camera, her teddy bear has a run-in with a dog and needs a bath and then the teddy stops talking, Asagi comes to the rescue.

There are hints that Daddy and Jumbo are planning a camping trip which I expect to be quite entertaining in the next book. Yotsuba's food adventures are funny. I was glad to see Yanda finally figuring out a way to make peace with Yotsuba (even if he's still a little immature about it). This is my current go-to relaxing filler read. But I only have 1 more book in stock! What am I going to do when I run out? If you're looking for a fun and safe manga, you need to meet Yotsuba.

Notes on content: No language issues that I remember (there might have been 1 heck). No sexual content. No physical violence. One puking scene (mostly suggested, very little shown).

Yotsuba dibelikan kamera!

This had to be by far one of my favorite books in the series. What I like about this series is that it doesn't take long to read. I read it in the span of less than an hour (about 40 min to be exact), and I laughed countless times. It is a very light-hearted series and I would recommend it to anyone any time.

Added to my fave volumes coz of so much laughter! Yotsuba’s genuine reaction when eating 🍕 for the first time, and learned that soap bubbles is called シャボン玉 in Japanese. She also got her first camera that led her to adventures! And the most hilarious part for me here was her and 🧸’s encounter with the dog!!

Yotsuba vol. 11
by Kiyohiko Azuma
4 out of 5 stars

It's been a while since I read Yotsuba. Her curiosity is just adorable. Then, most of people around her are also very supportive. Her dad that sometimes being funny, Jumbo, and even Yanda. Tbh, one of my memorable scene here would be when Juralumin shpuld grt a surgery by Asagi. So cute.
