How to Open Go

Rate this book
Three thousand year old board games can be really difficult to learn...

Which is why I've made it my goal to simplify the beginning of this great game so that players do not feel intimidated trying to learn it, or improve. Go is regarded as one of the world's most difficult games to master, but with some simple understanding of the fundamental principles involved in selecting your moves, it doesn't have to feel that way.

In this book you'll be taken through the very first moves played in a game of Go, how to think about the board, how moves interact with each other, basic principles, basic common joseki, and more.

Definitely do not get this book in order to learn to play Go. It is not a book for a complete beginner. But once you're comfortable playing on 19x19 boards and have an online rank of around 15 kyu, this would be helpful, and it's still helpful all the way up through low dan ratings (as a low dan myself, you can trust me there). It's essentially Dwyrin's Basics videos in book form. If you're a fan of those videos, then you'll like the book. If you've never seen them, check them out on YouTube first.

I'm only deducting the one star because of how desperately it needed a proofreader. There are typos and/or grammar errors on nearly every page. It doesn't really affect understanding the points he's making, but it is very distracting.

...of a series of games at different levels.

The intention is to encourage readers to see the "bigger picture" of the whole board.

Probably most helpful to double-digit kyus who are eager to improve.

A good introduction to the game and gives enough for one to be able to start playing and having fun and knowing what they are doing.
