Sonic and Tails team up with Knuckles and the Chaotix against Robotnik's most terrifying weapon to date--a doomsday machine that could roboticize the entire planet with just the push of a button... the Death Egg. The massive space station looms over Mobius, threatening to turn every living creature into mindless drones. Can our way-past-cool blue hero and his heroic friends defeat Robotnik and destroy this ultimate weapon before it's too late? And even if they succeed... will the Death Egg rise again?
Sonic Select Vol. 6 collects stories from Sonic Quest #1-3 and the Sonic the Hedgehog Free Comic Book Day 2010 and 2011 specials.
I am confused as to the choices Archie made when putting together these Select books. Why not just insert the relevant stories into the Archives? Wouldn't that make more sense? In this 6th volume of Select, readers get a mini series from early in the Sonic timeline, as well as some cameos of the Death Egg from over a hundred issues later. It's a weird combo, particularly considering the backstories are just glimpses at a bigger story line.
The Death Egg Saga, aside from being a Star Wars rip-off, was one of the better examples of stories from this time period in the comics. If only because it had a specific plot that it was addressing rather than... 18 separate plots. The Freedom Fighters need power rings to help the king, and while trying to collect some, Sonic discovers Robotnik's latest evil plan and must foil it. It's your standard, try to stick all the characters into the story, then beat lots of stuff up comic, but it's entertaining enough. I am super annoyed though that the climax of the story introduced another ineffectual robotic Sonic (Silver Sonic this time), and depended on a particularly stupid mode of resolution (Sonic and Tails went inside of robots and used them like puppets. Which worked in Star Wars because those were only suits, not solid mechanical automatons with no room for someone to slip inside...). But hey, considering the terrible story fails this series has, this wasn't the worst resolution to one of their stories.
The backstories had more to do with... non-Death Egg appearances which was strange. I did enjoy the sneak preview of future issues though. Sonic's voice was clear and less annoying, and the stories balanced action and narrative well.
Once again, however, it seems silly to have released this issue as a Select rather than just slot these stories in at the appropriate point in the archives.
