Lyn grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out! In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home six a week — and there were so many to choose from. Her favorites were Cotton in my Sack by Lois Lenski, The Little House series and the One of a Kind Family series. Later, she discovered Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances!
This love of books led to a desire to write. Lyn won prizes in high school and college for her poetry and, not surprisingly, Lyn became a history and English teacher. When she became a mother, she gave up teaching, and while raising a son and a daughter, she began working on her first novel. Then she wrote her second and third. Long years of rejection followed — as it does for most writers. Finally in 1997, Lyn got "the call." Her first book, Never Alone, was chosen to appear in the first year of the new Love Inspired line. Lyn has written many articles on writing and the emerging Christian Booksellers Assoc. (CBA) fiction market. In 2006, Lyn's book, Chloe, is a finalist for the RWA's RITA, the highest award in the romance genre in the inspirational category.
Now, Lyn spends her days writing books that show the power of divine as well as human love. Her nest is empty and she and her real life hero, her husband, have more and more time to spend together in their home on a lake in the lovely northwoods. And books are still dear to her heart.

I really love how the books in this series build upon each other, and each book includes characters from the previous books. I especially loved the focus on Veda in this one, and the role she plays. What a creative turn for the author to take with this character!

In addition to previous characters, this third book in the series focuses on a young woman with Indian heritage named Kirsi, and a young doctor in Steadfast, Doug. The two meet when Kirsi comes to help at the clinic, but she comes in with some secrets. Her secrets unravel along with her life as a series of events changes the course of her time in Steadfast.

The suspense, romance, mystery and faith were very well written! As with the first two books, Harlan's light and wisdom shine bright and are an anchor of faith in the midst of everything going on. I didn't care for the second book in this series so much but am glad I stuck with moving on with the series because I very much enjoyed this one!

I was surprised by the amount of action in this book.
Kirsi has an Indian background but a strong Christian worldview. She is starting a new job in small town WI as an ER doctor after big city CA.
Her talk to the high school kids on drugs was excellent.
Recommended. Suspenseful.
This is third in a series but can be read as a stand-alone.

Inspirational contemporary fiction set in a small town in northern Wisconsin. This book is third in a series but works fine as a stand alone.

The basic story is fine, but I did not like the way the author told it.

It is one thing to have information gradually come to light, but when one of the characters keeps making mental references to this terrible thing that happened, I want to know what it is then, when the the character is thinking about it. The character knows what it is already and is aware that it is affecting their life and judgement and is thinking about it.

Dr. Royston's judgement also comes into question. She is attacked twice in a short space of time, including once by a person who is trying to kill one of her patients, and that person turns up murdered shortly after that, but she sees no reason to mention the many "breather" calls she has been getting. It's not like she has a history of being stalked, or anything.

When someone confesses to the second attack and the sheriff has her listen to the person confessing describe what happened because only she and the perpetrator know what really happened, Dr. Royston recites psalms in her head instead of listening and so misses an inconsistency in the story.

I also didn't understand why her reasons for needing to back out of her contract with the people of Steadfast had to be kept secret from them. Just because she doesn't want to go into every detail shouldn't mean that she can't tell the basic reason. They invested a lot of time and effort and money in getting her there, they deserve more than what she gave them.

It was just a frustrating read for me. There was plenty of mystery in the story itself without the author piling on needless obfuscation.

Summer's End was excellent hodgepodge of Christian romance and suspense, creating a captivating story that revolved around the inner emotions of two young, unlikely doctors in the small town of Steadfast, Wisconsin. Dr. Doug Erickson is the head doctor at the town's clinic and has awaited the arrival of his new partner Dr. Kirsi Royston. Dr. Royston had formerly worked in the Los Angeles, due to the townspeople of Steadfast paying for her medical education, in exchange for her work in their clinic. Upon arrival, she instantly feels at home and attracted to her new colleague; Dr. Royston fights these urges though as she prepares to leave in order to deal with pressing family issues. The announcement of her soon departure uproars the town. This begins a series of strange threats towards Dr.Royston; could this gang-related. due to the sudden popular drug exchange? Could this be in result of haunting past in LA? All while Dr. Erickson finds himself falling harder and harder for his endangered partner.

I very much enjoyed this book, because it left me guessing, which is not easy to do. The romance between the two doctors did not seem nor did it seem rushed.

The only thing I did not like about this book was the constant introduction to new characters. Summer's End brought someone new into the story, making a suspect to Kirsi's attacks almost impossible to pin-point.

Summer's End by Lyn Cote
Northern Intrigue Series Book Three
Dr. Kirsi Royston is heading to Steadfast, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, things have changed in her life and so have her commitments. It seems that the small-town has gone wild with her arrival. The quiet area isn't so quiet. And the doctor isn't what she expected either. Talk about being torn between two worlds.

Dr. Doug Erickson is awed from the moment he lays eyes on the new doctor. She is gorgeous. When things start happening in the town and around Kirsi—all of Doug's protective instincts go up.

The town of Steafast has gone wild. Drugs, shootings, and disappearances. Even some with strong faith are wondering where God is in all of this. Either the occurrences are going to make them stronger—or break them. If they don't find the source—it may even kill them.

Kirsi has just moved to town. The town provided her with an education to become a doctor and in return she is to spend 6 years being a doctor in their clinic. But when she finally arrives, she realizes that she is still needed back home to care for her mother. She has received an inheritance she didn't expect and can repay the town, and promises to find a replacement before she leaves. Her first steps into the ER find her getting involved immediately in a drug overdose case, which also leads to murder and being locked in a closet. Things are a little more exciting than she bargained for. She also finds herself falling for Dr. Doug, the grandson of the doctor that started up the clinic many years ago.

The longer she stays, the less she wants to leave.

I really enjoyed this book. Had lots of page turning action and interesting characters. Clean romance.

Summer's End: a suspenseful love story!

A rollercoaster ride awaits you in this quick & engaging read. Kirsi escapes her profoundly depressed mother and her grandparents, who have cared for their only daughter and continue to do so. Kirsi graduated from medical school and practiced in a busy L.A. emergency room. She accepts a position in rural Steadfast, WI, knowing she will have to leave to care for her mother before her contract is fulfilled. She didn't expect to fall for the doctor who runs the clinic or his doctor grandfather, who had founded the emergency hospital. Her first patient is a teenager who almost dies from a meth-laced Marijuana cigarette. Drug dealers are moving into the countryside. Enjoy this suspense-filled love story! You won't be disappointed.

Interesting Plot

I liked the plot of this story. I really wanted to know who the culprit was and how everything would turn out. So in spite of the oddly placed italics for inner dialog, a couple of MCs who took longer to warm up to, and several places where the POV flipped unexpectedly, I kept reading. I'm glad I did. I'll continue reading this series because the stories are interesting. If you don't mind the things which bothered me, and you enjoy a good inspirational, suspense romance, then you might like this book.

Captivating

I found this book to be captivating. No town is immune to the epidemic of drug trade. This story line holds your interest as how a rural community deals with uncovering where the drugs are coming from and dealing with young people who do not always make good choices. Of course the main characters are facing their own personal issues. I have really enjoyed this series.

Summer's End

Clean wholesome reading filled with mystery, danger, romance and hearts turned to the Lord. This second book in this series blew me away more than the first! Fast paced action brings to doctors together at a rural clinic. Will Dr. Doug and Dr. Kersi finally admit their feelings only to be pulled apart? Only God can answer prayer, which you will see many times over in this book!

Another great edition to this series by Lyn Cote. I love that Cote brought in diversity of characters. I love that Doug and Kirsi each essentially struggle with the same thing as their sense of family responsibility keeps each of them tethered. Without spoiling the ending, I love how Cote resolved everything. It could have been drawn out and complicated, but she kept it simple.

Enjoying this series!

Prescription for love

Dr. Doug and Old Docanxiously await the doctor from California. When she shows up early, there's a sudden spate of emergencies and Dr. Royston is suddenly in the middle of it all. Having worked in an LA ER, she quickly recognized a drug overdose. When he is somewhat stable, she goes to check on him and a man is trying to kill him. He rushes Dr. Royston and knocks her down. That's just the beginning. The action really takes off. A very exciting book.

Good but not great

I really wanted to give this book a 5 but I just couldn't. The writing was ok but the editing was poor. The story seemed rushed at times and dragged at other times. Not the best book in the series but I'm glad I read it. It wasn't a waste of time and it was clean and had some good moments.

Never stops

A real page turner as you try to figure out who and why. A number of difficult and seemingly impossible situations to resolve. Good explanation on what " honoring your parents" means. Some great prayers. Good reframes. Love Vera's turnaround. Loved Kirsi, she is tough, determined, devoted, and good at what she does. A good suspenseful read.

I liked it for the most part, although it is dated. A bit preachy in parts. I didn’t feel very connected to the story but, objectively, I enjoyed it. It was okay. The ending was very abrupt, which was a great disappointment. I kept flipping back and forth to see if I’d missed a page. It was awkward.

A Riveting Story of True Peace From Adversity

Parts of this story were hard to read. The author writes so authentically that it felt like I was there in the story. We are’t promised a life free from difficulties, but we are promised perfect peace to them that love the Lord. Lyn is an excellent author and highly recommended.

A cute story about a new ER doctor who arrives in a small town in Wisconson knowing she needed to find a replacement for herself as she needs to return home to care for her mother. Instead she falls in love with the other clinic doctor she is to work with. Add in threats posed by a meth criminal and you have an intersting and clean love story that has a feel good ending.
