Like all of Marcia Adams’ cookbooks, this one is full of easy recipes that taste phenomenal and are made from fresh, natural ingredients. Country cooking that will nourish you and comfort you without clogging your arteries or dulling your senses. And I love her travel tips and cultural insights and anecdotes. A delicious ode to the best of the heartland.

I'm upset that I lost my copy after a move. I hope it went to somebody who can truly appreciate it, at any rate.
I love to bake, and I discovered this book after seeing the author's PBS show. This is now a family favorite, adn desperately needs to be replaced. On holidays and birthdays I bake batches of Billy Goat cookies and breads to ship to family and friends. I also love the slaw recipes, veggie recipes, pretty much everything in this book.
A warning to busy cooks - some of the things in this book do take a little time. This isn't always food you can rush.
It is, however, food my picky hubby will eat with reckless abandon.
The photography is gorgeous - it sometimes makes me want to move out of the burbs - and the notes on Amish life are something from which anybody can learn.
A few cookbooks should be in everybody's kitchen: The Joy of Cooking, the Fanny Farmer cookbook, and this one.

I have her first cookbook featuring recipes from the Amish and Mennonite communities. The Country Fair Sandwiches are outstanding and have earned me raves.

This book features more very interesting recipes that in many cases Marcia Adams updates for "English" kitchens. That's those of us living outside Quilt Country and who have slow cookers, food processors and electric mixers. It really makes me appreciate the things that those home cooks do with wood burning stoves and no modern conveniences.

These are recipes for when you have time to fuss and I hope you can do that, you'll love the results from either cookbook I've used.

If for no other reason, check out this book at your local library or bookstore. The photographs are incredibly beautiful! And just for smiles, read a recipe or two (2). No harm (calories) in doing that!
