Daniel Corrigan is as regular as can be, especially when compared to the Supers: kids in his new hometown with actual powers like flight and super strength. But Daniel's not powerless. Only he was able to stop the Shroud, a supervillian bent on stealing his newfound friends' powers. And thanks to him, his friends got to keep those powers.

Now Daniel himself is starting to display powers, while at the same time, his friends are losing theirs. His friend Eric thinks Daniel is just becoming a Super himself, a late-blooming one. But Daniel worries there may be something more sinister at work, since his power-stealing ability is uncomfortably like the Shroud's. Of course, the Shroud is gone now . . . or is he? And could Daniel himself be his new vessel?

I have now read all of the books in this series and I loved all of them. This one is definitely tied with first because of how mysterious it is. I really liked how they brought in Henry Plunkett´s (the shroud) grandson to add to the mystery and see if he was the bad guy. I was very surprised when Daniel started to display superpowers similar to Eric´s. I did think something was a little fishy when Eric´s powers started to weaken. Also Daniel started to have nightmares about the shroud and I thought that was weird. Finally the action picked up in the book when these shadows attacked them. Finally Daniel and his friends defeated the shadows and they found out that the shadows were their past friends with superpowers but they had no memory from the shroud doing something to them. When Daniel and his friends defeated the shadows all of his friends were released back into world. Daniel also found out that he was developing powers because he had the shrouds stone that the shroud used to steal peoples powers in his room and he was taking Eric´s powers by accident. I really like all of these books and I hope they come out with more.

this book shows that you don't need to have super powers to be a hero

I love superhero stories, and POWERLESS stood out from the pack to me because of it's brutal first chapter. Michael's whole life is flying, until he wakes up without his powers or memories, never to fly again. That's been the fate of the children of Noble's Green for centuries. Many of them have a superpower, but they lose it and all memory of it on their thirteenth birthday. Then Daniel Corrigan came to town and helped the Supers find and defeat the culprit.

But something has happened, and the Supers are again losing their powers. Temporarily, but who knows when they'll be gone forever? Meanwhile, Daniel is showing evidence of developing powers and the grandnephew of their nemesis the Shroud has come to town. He's obviously the number one suspect, but Daniel's worried things aren't so simple.

In addition to having a fast and fun storyline, the morality of SUPER is not black and white. Who deserves power? Who can decide whether or not someone deserves power? Daniel may want to help his friends, but some of the super-powered kids aren't as nice or altruistic. If the local bully didn't have super strength, that would be a good thing. But would it just stop there?

I liked that there isn't much romance, since the main characters are younger teens. (They're maybe fourteen during SUPER.) There are hints of crushes and a quick kiss, but nothing more. There are a lot of friendships that cross gender lines, which is nice to see. Molly, a flyer, is one of the toughest characters and always ready to defend her friends. And Daniel is a good protagonist for the series, since he has no powers - just the ability to think things through and use his head.

I do recommend starting with POWERLESS, since SUPER deals with the fallout from the first book. Both tell complete stories, however. Each book has a definite end and can stand on its own if need be. I'd be happy to read another Noble's Green novel, but SUPER does not require a sequel. This series is a good choice for kids who love superheroes and are looking for a good read that isn't a graphic novel.

Too redundant of what happened in the previous title.
Take away all the retelling and its great. But for those that loved the first book and want to read this one right away... WAIT. You will enjoy it more when you can use the reminder. OR if you want to skip the first and read this you can because that back story won't be over kill for you.

There is enough of a story here to be its own book but personally feel that too much retelling of the first book is included.

It was fun to see Brianna get so excited when this book came in at the library. She biked the mile to pick it up herself and then read it all in one night. I was a little slower getting through it but I also enjoyed the adventure.

What it's about: Daniel Corrigan and his friends defeated the evil Shroud, a.k.a. Herman Plunkett, which allowed Daniel's friends to retain their superpowers. But a year on, something strange has started happening. During the final battle with Plunkett, Daniel was offered the power to become the Shroud's protege via a ring made of the same meteorite material that gave everyone their powers -and which allowed the Shroud to drain those powers away with his meteorite amulet. The amulet was buried with Plunkett in the quarry cave-in, but Daniel has kept the ring tucked away in a secret hiding place. He never told his friends about Plunkett's offer, or the ring. Now Daniel has started having terrible nightmares where the Shroud pulls him in.

Then something truly unexpected happens - Daniel somehow manages to "borrow" his friend Eric's powers. Daniel finds himself with strength, and able to fly - while Eric finds himself depowered. But shortly the powers switch back. No one knows this except Eric and Daniel, and they don't want to tell the others until they can figure out what happened.

Making matters worse: The first time Eric loses his powers is while he is trying to save a new arrival to the town - the teenaged grandnephew of their former nemesis. A new family of Plunketts have arrived - and teen Theo is suspicious of these younger kids happened to be around when something really strange happened that save his life.

As Daniel tries to figure out what is happening with his ability to "borrow" powers, the supers find themselves confronted by Shades - shadows that resembled weakened versions of the Shroud. Eric is convinced that Theo is involved in what is going on, but Daniel isn't so sure. And yet, the more Daniel tries to find out what's going on, the more it looks like Eric may be right.

What I thought: This was mostly an enjoyable follow-up to the first book. I didn't find myself QUITE as pulled in, but it was pretty good. Daniel spends a little too much time in this one spinning his wheels, unsure of what to do or how to act. Which, TBH, felt pretty realistic for a middle schooler. I'll be diving into the final book in the series next - I'm curious to see how things get resolved, particularly with a title like Villainous.

Why my chosen shelves:
CWs: dark, violence, child abuse: The villain harms several people and nearly kills several others; mental health: The MC is worried that he is going insane and is plagued by anxiety about it through much of the book

Characters: Diverse: Several characters are coded as Black and Chinese; marginalized: The MC is the only one of his friend group that doesn't have superpowers, which he regularly thinks about, and which makes him feel like an outsider even within his friend group;

Genres: superhero: the MCs of the story are middle school kids with superpowers; Action-adventure: Lots of action as superhero kids battle foes; mystery: the MC has no powers except the power of deduction - he is working on figuring out several mysteries connected to the possible reappearance of a supposedly dead villain, and how that may be connected to the arrival of the villain's estranged family in the town; fantasy/sci fi: It's unclear why the kids have powers, except that it's related to a meteorite that crashed years ago, fragments of which still retain some unusual properties; thriller, scary: there are some darker moments in this story - there is definitely a much more creepy vibe, and there are a few much darker scenes in this book than in the first; coming of age: The MC has to deal with thinking about growing up, and particularly about how he feels about girls, as one clearly has a crush on him, but he doesn't know how he feels about that;

Topics: friendship: The MC keeps secrets from his friends, ostensibly to protect them, but when they find out, they are hurt, and the MC has to reckon with what it really means to be a friend; ghosts/spirits: This book features "shades" that seem to be ghostly remnants of children who had their powers taken away by the villain in years past

Why I rated it like I did:3.5 - I didn't like it quite as much as the first - it dragged a bit in places - but overall, it raised the stakes and added some more gravity to the story, which makes sense for a sequel. It didn't quite go as I'd figured, but it did very specifically address some of the tropes of the superhero genre, and I really liked the lessons it imparted: Trust your friends; logic can only take you so far; talking is better than fighting. This would be a good addition to a collection.

Third favorite book of all time, (after the last book in the series, Villainous, and my second fav, Powerless) and deserves more praise.

The book Super picks up after Powerless, and introduces a new character: Herman's grandson, Theo. Though he is deeply tied into the plot, the story really is more about Daniel and his powerless-ness. His friend's, the other Super's, powers begin mysteriously coming and going. And when they go...Daniel gets powers. He starts questioning whether or he not he himself is becoming a Shroud. Is the Shroud returning? Is Daniel becoming a Super? Are his friends in danger? Is Theo behind it all? Or...is Daniel the real Villain?

Just a premise for if you take this recommendation but as you can see, this book really raises the stakes a little bit. Below are some opinions I have revolving around spoilers.

SPOILERS BELOW

~ One thing I haven't mentioned is Louisa and Daniels newfound relationship. I've never given an opinion on this before, though it was hinted in the first book. In all honesty, I think everyone at first was hoping for Mollie and Daniel to become a thing. But then, we all quickly shifted gears and fell down the rabbit hole of Louisa and Daniel. Yes I admitt, I really supported their relationship as I was reading the second book. Actually, I was kinda obsessed with these two. However, I'm not the biggest fan of Louisa's character. I could rant about her for awhile, but I'll save that for my review on Villainous when there's more information on their relationship (and how Mollie is involved).

~ Moving on from that, I honestly like how Daniel was portrayed in this book. Okay, hear me out. I've said it another review how I admired his personality because of the following: his cleverness, leadership, independent spirit, determination, teamwork skills, main character personality, etc. At the beginning of the book, Daniel seems a little jealous of the Supers. I mean, imagine having all of your close friends be superheros while you have no powers at all. But In this book, after he experiences flying for the first time, he kind of feels guilty for wanting to keep the flying ability. At least, I got a selfish vibe from him at the time. He tried fighting back those feelings, but he was still accidently stealing his friends powers. Even though this slight hint of selfish, jealous and greedy side of Daniel is in contrast to the side of his personality I like, I think it really makes it easier to relate to him. Not everyone's perfect, so I think this "flaw" makes his character more realistic. And not to mention, relatable. Or I mean, maybe I'm looking too far into things, who knows. People can be weird about their favorite book characters I guess.

There are many elements to this book I didn't discuss, but I'd rather save them for my review on Villainous, after everything is revealed. This book is probably my least favorite in the entirity of the series, but nonetheless, it's a 5 star read.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

November, Super, Matthew Cody

The book Super is the second book in the Heroes of Noble's Green trilogy. it is about a powerless boy named Daniel and his super powered friends and their adventures together. After defeating the evil shroud in the last book, Daniel and two of his powered friends Eric and Rohan save the shroud's grandchild, Theo. After this encounter, Theo is suspicious of the children and Daniel starts displaying powers. Though this may seem like a good thing, Daniel learns that he is stealing his friends powers. Then, smaller, weaker shrouds start appearing called shades. Can the Supers keep their secret and their powers while trying to handle Theo, Daniels ability to steal the Super's powers, and the shades all at once?

The theme of Super is to never give up. Many times Daniel and the Supers almost give up and let the shades win but they never did. If they did they would have lost their powers for good. Another example is when Daniel tries to distance himself from his friends when he learns he can steal their powers. They are persistent and keep badgering him and they eventually find out a way to stop it. This was a really good book and i'd recommend this book and the first book to anyone who is interested!

Super, by Matthew Cody, is about Daniel Corrigan. Daniel lives in Nobles Green, the ‘safest town in the world’. This is because of the kid supers that have protected the town for 80 years. Daniel’s friends are the current supers of the town. Daniel and his friends defeated Herman Plunkett in Powerless to put a stop to the evil Shroud. This is why when they find out there's a new Plunkett in town, Theo, they are shocked. Daniel meets Theo and they are fast friends.

Theo invites Daniel and his friends over to his house and while they are there, Louisa, is attacked by a shade creature. Another attack happens while they take Theo to the treehouse and are attacked again. They have Theo yell commands to see if the shades would obey a Plunkett. This works and Theo joins them. Eventually the shades lead them to their layer. Read Super to find out what happens next.

People who like really like superpowers/superheroes would love this book. This book is for kids 3rd - 6th grade. This book is unique because it takes the standpoint of a normal kid in a town of superkids where usually a book about superheroes takes the standpoint of the hero. A would give this book a 5 out 5 star rating because I love the storyline and point of view Matthew Cody chose to use.

It's been a long while since I read Powerless, but Cody does a great job reminding us readers what happened in Book 1 (even if you have a 3-year gap in between books, like me).
Daniel has a great narrative voice, and Cody's writing is really easy and enjoyable to read.

Plot-wise: the mystery of the shrouds in this book was a little creepy & kept me on tenterhooks waiting to see how it would all play out (especially with Theo, the new kid, as this book's suspected bad guy for a bit). Daniel, Eric, Molly, Rohan, Louisa, & Rose choose to fight until the end (even when things looked super bleak), and as far as messages go, I think this book is super strong.
The ending leaves a pretty big question mark for book 3. What in the world will happen & what will life look like for Daniel and his friends?

I know I'm not the intended audience, but I'm really liking this series. :)

The first website I checked for the series order said this was book 1 and the first book that Cody published. I thought it was odd that so many times he referred to a previous adventure, especially since he did such a good job of portraying current action. Well... further research, as in when I was looking to put holds on the other books in the series, revealed that this was book 2 and no mention of this being the first book that Cody published. I thought about listening to the actual first book anyways, but since all of the plot highlights were so completely revealed and disambiguated in the second book, I think I will pass.
This was a fun junior novel. I do reaalize that I as a 50 year old man was not the intended audience so my critiques should be seen in that light. Also, spoilers...
This book commits the sin of many junior novels, in that adults are largely portrayed as clueless and not particularly involved in the lives of young people. It also portrays the kids as being smarter than all of the adults in the story, while claiming that they are just normal kids.
The author was the reader and did a fairly good job. He didn't really do voices, but it wasn't an issue.

I read the first book in this series to a grade 5 class during library time. Perhaps it was because I didn't have the totally absorbed audience listening that I found this one not quite up to the quality of the first, but it seem as good. There was still some good moments during this one, but for the most part it felt a little repetitive. The ending was the most original part of the book from the first, but is that to hook me into reading the last book? I was going to read it anyway, so I hope that it takes a new direction. There is definitely opportunity to do so with the way things were left, but Plunkett is still part of the story, so....

Wasn't a total disappointment by any means, but I think that it could have been better.

An interesting continuation of the story from the first, though a lot of it is "Heroes"-lite. You have Sylar, even briefly a Peter. There's a cheerleader of sorts but she's actually the Flash and can fly. Superman shows up, minus the heat vision.

I'm a little bummed it only made it to three books. Though given that book three is about Villians it makes sense. And looking at the Heroes wiki, huh:

Season 1 - Genesis, an introduction to the characters and big bad.
Season 2 - Generations, an introduction to the past characters
Season 3 - Villians/Fugitives, the bad guys are central and everyone in the world knows about the super-powered humans.

And the three Supers books fit this.

The main idea of Super by Matthew Cody is that Daniel and the rest of his friend are losing powers because of Daniel and monsters that they called shades. The setting of the book is in a small town named Noble Green. The conflicts of the story are man vs. man because they are fighting evil monsters that take away the powers from Daniel's friends and it is also man vs. self because Daniels new power is taking away other people's powers and when Daniel’s friends need their powers the most he takes them away. The main characters of the book are Daniel, Eric, Mollie, and Rohan. The problem of the story is that the supers of Noble Green are losing their powers.

Loved it. I read the first book when I was around 10 and I loved it. I didn’t know it was a series and as soon as I did I got the rest of the books. Now that I’m older and it’s not intended for me I wasn’t sure if I would like it but it was just as good as the first. I’m excited to finish the series!

Daniel and his friends are adjusting to life without the power stealing shroud while Daniel has developed a new party to be able to temporally use his friends powers. As the gang deals with more emotions and complicated decisions they are forced to confront new and old enemies. Upper elementary.

Enjoyed this book, maybe not quite as much as #1 but still a solid four star.
The dynamic between Daniel and Louisa is interesting and looking forward to seeing it develop.
Caveat - I think the author is straying a bit from his original concept, hopefully he can reign it in for the final book in the series.
A good follow up and not too much evidence of second book syndrome.

Super was a good book, but one of the things i liked about Powerless was the secrecy of their powers in Nobles Green. I don't like how everyone got their powers back. I also think the idea of mini shrouds called "Shades"

The middle seemed to sag - was it really going to be that different from the first novel in this series? was the charm gone? - but I actually found this ending more satisfying. Overall, it was a well crafted superhero mystery.

Daniel's story continues--only this time, he too has powers. But only sometimes. Cracking the code of "why/when" and evaluating the new Plunkett kid form the basis of this book. It gets spooky / creepy like the 1st one (manipulating people through dreams and Shades, plus gross cobwebby things) ... overall appropriate for middle grade kids who aren't easily spooked and like things a little creepy.
