The 66-year old Cooper or “Wave” House in Malibu from architect Harry Gesner is on the market. Here is one of my photos from January 2017 when I was working on the fully revised 6th edition of the Gebhard – Winter guidebook to Los Angeles architecture. Robert Winter asked me a year earlier if I would join him to get out one more edition. David Gebhard had passed 20 years earlier. Dr. Winter instructed me at the outset that we had to limit the entries in our book to architectural work that can actually be seen by the enthusiast who comes to look at it. That rule was at times tough to adhere to. When I came to the task of reproducing the guidebook, my own background was to find and introduce to others what is notable, historical, quizzical, and beautiful in our great city while walking. You cannot see the Wave House from your car – but you can see it if you are willing to take a walk. I stretched the rules for our guidebook so that it could include architectural works right on the beach by John Lautner, Frank Gehry, Pierre Koenig, Craig Ellwood, Jerrold Lomax, and Harry Gesner. Maybe you cannot drive there but I sought to provide tips about where to park, what path to take, what tide levels to avoid, and how to identify the house in question since there would be no address in sight.
