Oh hey, after over a month of waiting, my hold on Sonic Select 5 finally came in! This collection contains the 2 Sonic Kids super specials, as well as the Girls Rule super special.

The Sonic kids stories flash back to the early days of the Freedom Fighters, showing readers how Tails learned to fly, when they found their secret Knothole base, how Sonic found shoes for Tails, and some useless story about them in a zone that was foreshadowing stuff that didn't need to be foreshadowed again. Some of the stories definitely break canon a bit, but I take them more as fun potentials of the past rather than something particularly serious. They balance the need to silly and action quite well for Sonic comics at this point.

The Girls Rule super special was one of my favourites as a kid, but it doesn't quite hold up. Sally decides to do the whole Source of All thing until she finds out that she'll know the future if she goes through with it. So she rejects the bond. Doesn't that mean King Acorn knew about his whole downfall? What does that imply for fate in the Sonic universe? This story makes canon hurt my brain :l

There's a short about Hershey on a mission. That's pretty boring. (Shrugs)

Lupe finally gets some attention, but then she's roboticized for reasons. Why did we kill Lupe off? Sadness :(

Bunnie's story is actually quite emotional. Her organic body is rejecting her robotic parts, so she must decide whether she wants to risk derobotizication or get new limbs. If she gets new limbs, she'll never be able to change back. Her and Antoine have a heart to heart and Bunnie gets an upgrade. I think the heart of the story is really strong, but I REALLY dislike the sexy limbs she gets. Ugg.

Finally, Julie-Su gets some focus on her past. Turns out she used to be Kargok's half-sister, political machinations, oh look, her foster parents! It's not a particularly strong story, but Spaz draws it so it looks amazing! (Why is Julie-Su on navigation in that one panel? What is the Dark Legion navigating? I am so confused... but everything is pretty!)

Sonic Select 5 is certainly not a standout in the comic world, but it's entertaining and gave me enough good things to tolerate the bad :) Three stars for effort!

The stuff with the kids was fine if ultimately not especially engaging. Given the characters' proportions it's hard to tell when they're kids anyway.

The stuff collected at the back with all the tertiary characters reminds you how terrible all the tertiary characters' stories are (and how terribly written.)

This is a good collection of short stories about the Freedom Fighters when they were kids. A lot of these stories affected the present of the storylines of the ongoing comic, so if you are reading the "Archives" editions, catching up on the past of the comic series...you should be reading this volume, especially, of the "Select" series, as well!
