I bought this with the $5 credit Comixology gave its subscribers when they made the big change to their storefront generated a lot of chatter on the internet. I couldn't care less since it barely affected me and I could use the credit to get more books.

This Winter Solider trade was one of the books I got, a steal for $1.99. For the price of a regular digital comic, I got a trade which had six issues. The trade collected the first five issues of the Winter Solider series by Brubaker and Guice which also had Fear Itself issue 7.1 which was essentially issue zero of the series since it was also done by the same creative team.

Bucky Barnes returned in the series to the familiar skin of the Winter Soldier after a stint as Captain America which ended with him dead. He got better.

I enjoyed Bucky as Cap although until he had paid for his sins as the Winter Soldier, he will always have that over him. Black Widow mentioned having "red in the ledger", the Winter Soldier had red ink dripping all over the pages. He may have been under Soviet programming that doesn't make him guiltless especially since he's starting to remember everything.

Complaining about the constant killing off and resurrection of major comic book characters is like bitching about the weather, it doesn’t change anything but you can’t stop yourself from doing it anyhow. So yes, I am a little irked that a character who has suffered TWO noble deaths keeps popping back up, but that’s just the way it is and no amount of fanboy outrage is going to stop Marvel and DC from doing it so I refuse to work myself into a rage stroke because of it.

Bucky Barnes was only mostly dead following the events of Fear Itself, and now he’s good as new. Since Steve Rogers is back in the role of Captain America and Bucky had some pretty severe international legal issues hanging over him, Bucky decides that he’ll let the world think he’s dead while picking up his old Winter Soldier persona. As a brainwashed Soviet assassin he was put into cryogenic sleep between operations so that his reign of terror spanned decades. Bucky did a lot of damage and knows that there are plenty of dangerous loose ends from the old program still lurking about. With the help of Black Widow, who just so happens to be another ex-Soviet spy and his lover, Bucky sets out on a clandestine mission to shut down any remaining threats from the bad old days.

As a first step, Bucky tries to locate three remaining assassins he trained that have been in cryo sleep since the end of the Cold War. Unfortunately, someone else gets to them first and is using them in a scheme against Doctor Doom that could start a war.

Brubaker does great work when he fuses criminal underworld/spy stuff with super powered people like he’s done in Sleeper and Incognito, and this storyline plays to that strength with covert types like Bucky and Natasha trying to quietly shut down potential threats with a little under the table backing from Nick Fury. This being in the Marvel universe allows Brubaker to throw some random batshit craziness at them like a gorilla with a machine gun or have them interact with a well known villain like Doom. I like the idea that Marvel has played with in recent years that the big splashy fights between superheroes and villains in front of the whole world are only the tip of the iceberg and that there’s always a secret covert war going on in the shadows.

It’s got a nice personal hook with Bucky feeling guilty about the evil deeds he did when brainwashed and seeing this as a way to finally redeem himself. The team-up of him and Natasha was another good idea with the two sharing a connection as ex-spies for the Russians, and they have fun chemistry together.

But even though I liked this story and very much enjoy how Brubaker writers Bucky, I still don’t know why they had to ‘kill’ him off on in Fear Itself. We all knew that Steve coming back as Cap was inevitable, and Brubaker had already written convincing reasons for Bucky to step down. It’s also understandable in the context of the story why Bucky would be willing to fake his own death, but they should have written it like that instead of trying to get some fake depth by not letting the readers in on it sooner and trying to milk the emotionality out of it.

I did love Steve’s reaction to the news that Bucky was alive because he angrily beats the crap out of Nick Fury for lying to him as part of a heartless manipulation. That’s what a lot of us would like to do to the Marvel editors who try to build hype with stunt killing of characters that lacks any sense of true consequences.

James Barnes has lived a long time and was forced into doing things against his will. Some of those things are coming back to haunt him as sleeper agents he trained as the Winter Soldier are being activated.
description
Even more haunting is their mission and their target...Victor Von Doom

The Longest Winter impressed me because it not only had a serious tone, but it left space for some laughter.
description
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, because I've run into some stories along these lines that are just missing that spark that makes it more than generic. Bucky and Black Widow together make one stellar spy team. Both of them impeccably trained and deadly. It seems crazy though that someone would choose to mess with Dr. Doom is it wasn't necessary. It makes perfect sense to stop him from destroying the world, but to mess with him just because it's Tuesday and he's pompous...that's just asking to die. I rarely get to see Doom let loose and I must admit it's a terror to behold.

The Winter Soldier series is off to a strong start with The Longest Winter.

Hell yes! Brubaker kills it again!

What’s it about?
Some books are just better to go into blindly and I’d say this is one of those books so SKIP!

Why it gets 5 stars:
The story is very good. An excellent and exciting Marvel adventure. The tone Brubaker gives this tale is less superhero, more thriller and I liked it a lot.
The art is fantastic and suits the story perfectly!
description
The characters are pretty well written. There’s the Winter Soldier which Brubaker basically created (more or less, like he created Winter Soldier but not Bucky) so of course he’s well written. Black Widow has an interesting personality plus she is both beautiful and bad-ass throughout this whole comic, love her in this! Doctor Doom is there too but I don’t wanna spoil too much, he’s pretty cool in this though.
There’s a lot of great action scenes throughout, that’s always fun! Ed Brubaker is great at espionage related action scenes and this is no exception, lots of great action in every issue!
There’s some comic relief that’s well done.
This book isn’t too predictable.
The dialogue is very well written for the characters saying it.

Overall:
Brubaker writes another winner! Seriously the story, action and artwork are so good with very well written characters and dialogue throughout.
If you like exciting comics this one is very unlikely to disappoint. Be sure to not miss it.
Highly recommended!

In the wake of Fear Itself, Captain America/Bucky Barnes “dies” and Steve Rogers becomes the one true Captain America. Except of course Bucky’s not dead and has instead once more adopted the Winter Soldier persona he used during the Cold War when he was a brainwashed Russian operative. He wants another shot at redemption so heads off with his returning memories to right more wrongs from the bad old days.

The Longest Winter is a pretty dull book. Bucky’s not the most fascinating character for his own title and was only really interesting when facing Cap in The Winter Soldier book that re-introduced him to the modern Marvel Universe. Teamed up with another bland character, Black Widow, and you’ve got a boringly overcomplicated and uninvolving espionage story with nukes and a plot to assassinate Doctor Doom.

I appreciate Butch Guice’s artwork is well put-together but I didn’t like it much here - the inks were too heavy and the book overall felt too dark and grim by far. The style reminded me of a less brilliant Lee Bermejo - who actually draws the amazing covers to this mini-series.

Ed Brubaker’s written better books than this. The Longest Winter is a forgettable story featuring second-tier characters going through your run of the mill spy hijinks until the inevitable end when they save the day. There are a couple of enjoyable moments like the communist apes but generally the comic is sombre and drab throughout most of the story. Bucky just isn’t interesting enough to carry his own series as the main character, and The Longest Winter reads like one long yawn.

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

Kindle Unlimited once again, coming in clutch, with this whole story arc being available. At the start of this volume, we see James Buchanan Barnes, our beloved Winter Soldier and at that time, serving Captain America, die. Yes, die. But in only the way Bucky can die, by going underground and getting payback for his days at Hydra. When recruited by Fury on a tip off that the Sleeper activation codes had been stolen, and an attempt made on Doctor Doom's life, Bucky and Nat must move and move fast to get things back under control. We see so much WinterWidow in this little collection, they really are my favourite ship in the MCU tbh, we see Bucky dealing with his past mentally and we get little snipets of the other Avengers. It hurt my heart when Tony was actually upset Bucky was gone, and how they all had nothing but good things to say about Bucky when at the wake.

I love Bucky more for Steve's sake than anything else -- I can't wait for the next film where he comes back as Winter Soldier, and eventually -- hopefully! -- reunites with Steve. And Natasha: I'm feeling that relationship more now; the panel at the beginning where she weeps wrung my heart. As did Steve's grief in his brief appearance at the beginning of the novel.

Overall, I'm a bit more interested in getting my hands on the volume where Winter Soldier makes his reappearance, but this one is full of Bucky and Natasha kicking butt. It's not a funny one at all -- except perhaps the communist gorillas, which made me snort unbecomingly in the quiet coach of this train.

This series delivers what I think a lot of people would want from a Brubaker run on Cap - superhero espionage! We get Bucky going to Latveria to try and stop war with Dr. Doom.

Butch Guice is great on the art duties.

This was flawless. The story was brilliantly thought out and written. The characters were all well fleshed out and interesting. The artwork was dark and gorgeous and fit the story perfectly.

Bruhhh this was so fucking good I'm crying and throwing up. This is a spy story more than it is a superhero story and I get with that so hard. I love the Winter Soldier and Black Widow from the MCU so seeing them being lovers, partners?? Kicking ass?? Together?? I'm literally screaming it was so beautiful.

The art was a little hard to get into for me but it fits the tone so well and I love how Black Widow is portrayed (and drawn). And while it's dark, Bucky and Natasha had such good banter. I'm gonna go scream at Marvel for denying us this connection in the movies. Also Dr Doom was HILARIOUS.

Oh, Bucky. Your pain is your pain, and you are allowed to express it however you want--even if that means taking on responsibility that cannot truly be yours in an attempt to suppress and address the guilt.

At least your hot-shit girlfriend is along for the ride. Random note: I love how the star on his mechanical arm (thank you, comics, for making that sentence a reality) has become Captain America colours. Permanent alliance to the shield, and to Steve. Like a tattoo crossed with auto detailing.

Where the Brubaker Captain America series changed in tone and art style, this Winter Soldier series continues that dark and gritty tone that I really enjoyed, and so far I really prefer it to the main series.

Me encantan Bucky y Natasha juntos.

Been wanting to read this for a while and Brubaker did not disappoint. Excellent stuff, Natasha and Bucky are awesome and there are some great moments with Von Doom as well. It's certainly worth picking up - as of right now it's currently on sale on Comixology.

A good first volume for the series, though there's a nagging feeling that this is just business as usual for Brubaker and Guice. Not that that's a bad thing, because their business as usual is still stellar storytelling, though later issues do depend on Dr. Doom being nice a little too much. Art is great, and Bucky and Black Widow are compelling lead characters, though they don't get quite as much spotlight as I would have liked. Still, not a bad start.

This was my first Winter Soldier comic and it was so entertaining! Subterfuge, deadly spies and sleeper soldiers are an excellent combo. I really like Natasha and Bucky's realtionship and the action scenes, but wish it explored Bucky's past as the Winter Soldier more. Really enjoyed the inner turmoil/angst we got tho

When I started reading this, I had the feeling that it was familiar. I'm not sure why I didn't act on that feeling, but it turns out I had read this already in Winter Soldier: The Complete Collection. I'm not sure if it's good that I was willing to read this book again, or bad that I didn't remember reading this the first time. Anyway, reading this with mostly fresh eyes, I thought this was good. I'm surprised in my earlier review that I said I didn't like this part as much. I also said that the artwork was "busy". I suppose I didn't mind it as much this time. It is an interesting style with not necessarily clean lines. I was impressed with the layouts. I appreciate that Fear Itself 7.1: Captain America was included here; I think it helped to set the scene.

Brubaker is a don!

After the hype of The Falcon & the Winter Soldier I decided to go back in on Bucky and this story is fantastic. The MCU owe a lot to these stories! Onto volume 2

This is Ed Brubaker returning to what he does best when he writes mainstream comics. A well paced and executed espionage tale, with some good characterization added. Brubaker pulled off what I consider the near impossible reviving a dead character and making the character interesting.

James Buchanan Barnes was thought dead by his former partner Captain America. Instead the Soviets had recovered the body and using cybernetics and suspended animation created the Winter Soldier a deadly spy and assassin. Events in Cap's title removed the Soviet conditioning and sent Barnes on his path to redemption.

In this volume Barnes has to track down three Soviet agents whom he had trained and had placed in suspended animation. Someone is reviving the agents, and each of the three is extremely well trained and competent in covert actions.

Brubaker does a good job in his portrayal of Barnes and slips in some characterization for one of the Soviet sleeper agents. The Black Widow is not ignored, and Brubaker's handling of her remains among one of her better portrayals.

As per usual, Brubaker delivers on the merger of super hero and espionage. This tales tells us what really happened to Bucky Barnes after the events of Fear Itself. (I hope this has been out long enough that I'm not spoiling anything- but if you are at all interested in Winter Soldier it probably won't ruin anything. Just in case, consider yourself warned!)

The Winter Soldier and Black Widow go on assignment to find out who has bought the information on not only the location of hidden Cold War era sleeper agents, but the codes to awaken them from stasis. Bucky is the right man for the job because he trained them back in the day. He and Nat go on a global chase to stop these elite agents from wreaking havoc for their mysterious new commander.

The whos and how's of the plot are like a Bond movie in the Marvel U and prove to be a very enjoyable ride. Throw Victor Von Doom into the mix and it gets even better! Guice's gritty art only helps to enhance an already enjoyable story. I highly recommend to comic fans, spy thriller fans, and anyone who enjoyed the Winter Soldier film.

i wonder if comics just aren't my thing? the lack of emotion and the ridiculous, over-dramatic poses...

also does it bother anyone else that there is very little facial structure variation in comics? like in this, at least, all the men have the same jawline and the same cleft chin. there was a short scene with Hawkeye and i literally thought he was Steve because there was no way to tell them apart (i was asking myself "why is Steve wearing this dorky pink and purple outfit?")

and what is up with Natasha's hair? it's varies panel to panel, on the same page, and it often has, like, teasing, like Flo the Progressive lady's hair. no pls that is not a good look artists

I am somewhat obsessed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it's awesome characters.

"There was a theory back in the Cold War that one man, in the right place at the right time, could be better than an army..."

Kind of enjoyed this. I'm brushing up on my Captain America + Winter Soldier knowledge for when the live action film comes out in 2014.

This the first comic/graphic novel about The Winter Soldier I've ever read so I think I may continue reading this series and perhaps read other previous related Winter Soldier comics.

I'm gonna admit, I picked this up because of the show. It's awesome to finally have the focus on Bucky's character, who I've always found interesting. This comic was quite compelling and I really liked the artwork. I was a bit confused? I feel like there was backstory I didn't have, but maybe it's just because I'm so used to the show/films universe. Like, I wasn't expecting Bucky and Natasha to be so close! I liked them together, I was just a bit thrown. That said, I liked it overall. Definitely going to read a few more Winter Soldier tales.
