The Others #7

Drive Me Wild

Rate this book
Tess Menzies can work a spell with a few blinks of her baby blue eyes. But this dedicated witch can’t summon up a single good reason she’s been made an envoy between her kind and Manhattan’s fiercest were-creatures. The two sides haven’t spoken in four hundred years, and she’ll need every miracle in the book to broker any kind of truce. And that means outwitting Council of Others leader Rafael De Santos whose tantalizing moves and fierce hungry kisses are magic even a formidable sorceress can’t resist . . .

It doesn’t take a cat’s supernatural senses for Rafael to suspect that there’s something strange about this unexpected peace offering. And finding the truth is just as tempting as uncovering the secrets Tess is trying to conceal. Why, she’s tantalizing enough to make this wandering were-jaguar think he’s found the perfect mate—one he’s only dreamed of. But his stealth and her spells can’t guarantee they have a chance at survival, much less a future together…

Born and raised in coastal New England, Christine Warren lived in the South and the Mid-Atlantic before hopping to the other side of the country to take up the life of a transplant in the Pacific Northwest. She completely bypassed those states in the middle due to her landlocking phobia. Hmm, need to research a scientific term for that...

When not scrambling frantically to complete her latest writing project, Christine spends most of her time as a crazy animal lady, hanging out with her dog Levi (he’s the one with the hair) and pretending to train him to have some manners. She also hangs out with her horse, Cal—a thoroughbred with a craving for strawberry licorice twists—her goddog, Merlin; and her best friend, fellow author Hannah Murray. In addition to playing with her pets, Christine’s hobbies include identifying dog breeds from photos of their underbellies, appreciating fine and not-so-fine wines, shopping for the perfect pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, and most of all reading things someone else had to agonize over.

She enjoys hearing from readers and can be reached via email sent to Christine@christinewarren.net or by postal mail to Christine Warren, PO Box 871900, Vancouver, WA 98687-1900.

I love this series, but I have to say this book was not what I expected. Tess is a very strong witch in the rest of the series and in this one, she barely has any powers. The way this series has come out in print, completely out of order makes the plot line difficult to follow sometimes.

I love Tess and I have always likes Rafe, but he was kind of a caveman in Drive Me Wild, which doesn't really fit his persona in the other books. If you haven't read the rest of the series, you might like Drive Me Wild more.

That' s not to say I didn't like it. Drive Me Wild was a good story and uber hot. But, just not quite up to the 5 star ratings of the rest of the series

This is one of my favorites from this series.. it may be my absolute favorite. It's hard for me to even put into words because all I want to do is ramble on about everything that was awesome in here.

Let's start with Rafe and Tess. I have loved Rafe since the very beginning and I have been waiting patiently (not really) for his book to come along. There has also been a little bit a mystery to him and I like that. Tess is a witch and she's is absolutely perfect for Rafe. Their first encounter, she tries to follow him but keeps tripping and making noises, so Rafe pins her to a wall so they can talk. She is this tiny little lady and she has a huge Jaguar shifter pinning her to a wall and she doesn't let that intimidate her what so ever. She fights back.. not physically but with her wit and sarcasm. I may have just a little bit of a girl crush on Tess. Another thing I loved about her was that even though her grandfather wanted her to gather info on Rafe and the Others.. she didn't. And she didn't try to hide that from Rafe. The others council also asks Rafe to gather info on the witches and he refuses to put Tess in that position.. again I love that.

Really there is a whole bunch of drama with the witches, her grandfather, and then lets not forget the whole curse thing. But the greatest part of the book was the relationship itself. Rafe was sexy as hell.. by far the best love scenes from the whole series. They fall in love pretty fast.. Of course they don't recognize it until the end but it's still there in everything that they do.

I am reluctant to pick up the next book just because this one was everything I would want in a paranormal book and Im afraid I'll be let down by the next. This series has been hit or miss for me and none of them have been like OMG.. except this one.

I quite liked this one, best out of the series so far. The heroine is quirky, witty, and sarcastic, so A+ for her. The hero is a hot alpha jaguar shifter who enjoys her wit and is supportive & caring.

It was a good pairing. Sweet. 4 stars may be too high, but I'm so happy it didn't suck.

The annoying part was Missy from book 2 of this series. I wanted to put duct tape over her mouth. She was so unnecessary in this book and only irritated me and the heroine with her super nosy questions/conversations and nonstop talking. I'd block her number & take out a restraining order if she spoke to me as she does the heroine.

I read this out of order so I already knew Tess. I knew she was a witch and would go on to do some interesting things later. I also was familiar with Rafael. So when I started this book I expected Rafael to be much smoother than he was. I thought it would be all swoon worthy romance and steamy sex scenes. Sadly this story disappointed. Rafael came off as an overbearing jerk. Bossy and WAY TOO pushy. I was constantly annoyed that he just pushed his way into Tess' life and then never answered her questions. I was honestly to the point of throwing this book. Avoidance was the single biggest issue for me. Rafael never did the tit for tat thing he just took and took. Frankly I found him extremely unattractive after this book. I was also a little thrown by the big bad in the story. It was just not well explained for resolved in my opinion. Pretty disappointed with this story. =(

Drive Me Wild
3 Stars

Sent by the Witch's Council to deliver a message to Rafael De Santos, the leader of the Council of Others, Tess Menzies wants nothing more than to complete her task and get out of dodge. Unfortunately, Rafe has other ideas as he suspects there is more to Tess as well as the offer of a truce with the witches than meets the eye. As Tess and Rafe clash on all levels, a dangerous foe is waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Series note: Once again, there are recurring characters from previous books and the series should be read in order.

As a reader of many paranormal romances featuring alpha shifters, I am no stranger to overbearing and obnoxious heroes, but Rafe DeSantos puts them all to shame. He is a complete sexist, misogynist dinosaur as the incredible M (Judy Dench) so eloquently put it. In addition to insinuating himself into Tess's life, there are also several situations of dubious consent in their relationship.

Tess, on the other hand, is delightful. Witty, snarky and cute, Tess does attempt to stand up to Rafe and does succeed every now and then. The true highlight of the book is her hilarious interactions with the other women in the series, particularly Missy.

Unlike the previous book, which had a strong and well-developed suspense plot, the threat here is more of an afterthought than an integral part of the story. The big reveal comes out of the blue and lacks foundation. Finally, his Bond-villain monologue and behavior are completely overdone.

Overall, not one of the better installments in the series, but Kate Reading's narration makes it worthwhile.

Drive Me Wild (The Others) by Christine Warren

This is NOT truly a re-print BUT...

...this WAS originally published as an Ellora's Cave Publishing book in 2003 and has been out of print for quite a while. I loved the original and as with several other of Ms Warrens re-prints, I was looking forward to some added scenes, dialog, etc cetera and I was not disappointed!

The 'romance' scenes are just as steamy as I remember from the earlier book and I was a little shocked to see that they hadn't seemed to have been toned down for the wider market as they had been in at least one of the other re-prints.

The story features what could be a woman that you could easily come to dislike since it seems early on in the book that Tess Menzies has no spine. This book is ALL about the fact that the woman is going to be submissive sexually and I have no problems with that, but I hate it when that submissiveness plays into Tess's daily life and it seems like she can never say no to ANYONE. Luckily, Ms Warren really knows how to make her characters grow and by the end of the novel you will be rooting for Tess.

Tess is a witch and as she has come to realize not a very strong one and she has an ability for some brief lapses into premonition. Tess has been drafted by her Grandfather to bring a message to the Council of Others leader Rafael De Santos a lusty, sexy, hot-hot-hot were-jaguar. The message gets delivered and things very quickly go from promises of heat, to full blown passion in a matter of a couple of chapters.

So now, we have a mystery of why the Witches Council wants to meet with the Council of Others (the furred and fanged group). However, we have an even more interesting mystery that has to do with an old curse and the fact that the feline population of were's have been losing the ability to reproduce...that is until Rafe and Tess get together!

This is a thoroughly engaging story filled with heat passion and a lot of humor. There are plenty of interesting characters and enough mystery to keep you reading well into the night. Rafe may get on your nerves a little bit, but he even with his flaws he is an adorable Alpha/Dominant type that will be sure to please most readers.

Have a good read!

Review originally posted here: http://thebookpushers.com/2012/12/20/...

I just recently discovered Warren and The Others series, and although this is only the second book of hers I’ve read, I really enjoy her writing.

Tess is a witch, and not exactly on the best of terms with her family. So when she gets handed down a special mission to reach out to the Council of Others leader Rafael, she is more than a little surprised. But the good little witch that she is goes out to do as she is told. Although Tess knew she would have a hard time getting Rafael to hear her out, she never expected the sexual chemistry between them to rock her to the core.

Rafael never thought he’d be a one-woman kind of man, but meeting Tess has him running in circles. Not only is he stuck trying to figure out what exactly the witches want to meet with him about, after 400 years of silence, but he also is dancing around Tess, trying to figure HER out. As the witches true plan begins to unravel, Rafael and Tess will both be tested in ways they never thought possible, and their future together becomes iffy at best.

I’m definitely intrigued by this series, and love the fact that the books each seem like a stand-alone. Like I said, I’ve only read two in the series, and yet I never really felt like I was missing anything with the overall story arc. Then again, I could just be totally oblivious to what is going on overall. I liked the uneasy feelings between the witches and the shifters, especially once it played into Rafael and Tess’ relationship.

I did like the relationship and romance between Rafael and Tess. It was fun to watch them dance around each other, flirt and try to work out the sexual tension, all the while wondering just where the other person really stood. I loved the fact that although Rafael wasn’t really sure that he would ever be able to settle down and mate, but when he found Tess, he knew just what he was getting himself into, and what he wanted from her. It was sweet to watch them work out all that sexual tension (RAWR), while realizing just how perfect they were together.

I liked the whole kerfuffle surrounding Tess and her grandfather. I felt so bad for the poor girl, because the man was obviously a piece of work. Yet the underlying power plays and backstabbing just made the book that much more interesting. I have to admit though, if I was Tess, I would have backhanded the old bastard a long time ago and never looked back!! The fact that she was willing to put up with so much bull from him had me questioning her judgement at times.

One of the aspects that I thought was somewhat weak in the story was the romantic curse against the jaguar shifters. Although it was touched on quite a few times, it never really worked for me. I don’t know why, it wasn’t like it was a frivolous plot point, however everyone blaming Tess seemed ridiculous and petty.

All in all I really enjoyed this book. I will definitely be looking into reading more from Warren and catching up with the series so that I can have a better understanding of the world as a whole. I really liked all the sexy times between Rafael and Tess, and enjoyed the twists and turns between the shifters and witches. I hope that Warren expands on that more in future books.
I give Drive Me Wild a B-

Knowing she's always been a disappointment to her grandfather because of her lack of magical ability sadden her but the heroine was never one to dwell on the negative. Her lack of magical excellence hasn't stopped her from opening her own tea shop and living her life in general contentment. Then she's called upon by the council of witches and her grandfather to deliver a message to the Felix of Manhattan and for once the heroine feels needed. But that fateful encounter changes her whole world. Boggling the attempt to stalk her prey, the heroine is confronted by the hero and both disturbed and aroused when he turns the table on her.

The hero is of a species not known for their fidelity and up until now he's played in the role of bad boy and loved every second of it. But then he meets the heroine. Smelling she's a witch, someone meant to be forbidden to him if not considered an enemy doesn't stop him from becoming instantly and intensely wrapped up in her. They flirt and they banter and they end of in bed together. Parting ways in the morning, the heroine is soon bombarded by the wives of his friends claiming that she is perfect for him, that she's meant for him but she's not interested in an affair. She thinks the hero could never be a one-woman man but little does she know that her involvement with the Felix has not only sparked in him a possessive need to claim her as a mate but it's also broken an ancient curse where the Jaguar species was slowly dying off. All this comes rushing at the heroine and in addition to the stress of her mean and overbearing grandfather and attacks on her person make her wish she just stuck to the safety of her living room and her old classic movies.

I liked this book but it was far from award winning or even remotely inspiring. It was a nice, easy mindless read but sometimes that's what I'm looking for. It had the feel of a cheap Harlequin romance and I was disappointed that the author chose to basically use a 'throw away' book on such a magnetic and charming hero. I was kind of hoping that Rafe's story would be a spark in an otherwise dull series and while I enjoyed it as I said, I still found it lacking. The heroine could be super annoying at the best of times and she was the carbon copy of every other heroine in this series but I thought she had moments of intelligence and passion. This was a decent book but don't expect too much out of it cause it's no thriller.

Christine Warren's fixed series became a little tedious when it seemed to be the same story in every book. Guy meets girl, guy has awesome sex with girl, girl is like whoa that was awesome sex, finds out guy is not human, possible conflict here and then they fall in love the end. Being an avid fan of romance novels with said story lines it's how the story is played out that counts! Warren make minute changes but I felt like it was the same story over and over. That being said there are now extended novels of these shorter stories and I would be interested to see if that is where Warren expands her story a little more...
Anyway, Rafael is a Felix which is some kind of Alpha of the cats being a werejaguar. Tess is a witch who has a meddling granddaddy. Brought together by the whim of the Witch's Council, Tess delivers a message to Rafael who all but sweeps her into sexual abandon in an alleyway or was it the street? They have an interesting dynamic as Rafe is used to getting his way (what Alpha isn't?) and Tess is not someone who appreciates being railroaded. They get to the nitty gritty and have at it but something weird is going on with the Witch's Council. It's not the most gripping plot but for all that the story line was lacking I would like to note that the sex scenes were very imaginative and held ample amount of passionate zing. They were hot scenes and I definitely hope that they were kept in the longer versions! While it isn't the most amazing shifter romance I've read but it's solid and I will be giving the extended novels a look in the future because I really want to read Ava's story!

Christine Warren is one of my "go to" authors. I was really excited when this book came out.

I was immediately taken with Rafe and Tess from the moment they burst onto the scenes. I truly enjoyed their interaction with one another. They made for a hot couple. I also liked Rafe and Tess individually. They are polar opposites: Rafe a take charge/take no for an answer/ I am alpha hear me roar type of guy while Tess is more reserved. I would not categorize Tess as being timid although I can understand how some people could draw that conclusion. I liked Tess' personality and felt like she was the ideal mate for Rafe. Readers who have read previous installments of "The Other" series will be happy to know you get some time with past characters like Graham and Missy.

There are a couple of things that I would have liked more from the book. I would have liked more in depth detail regarding Tess' relationship with her grandfather since her grandfather plays a significant role in this story. Lastly, I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I felt like it ended too abruptly-especially since I enjoyed it from beginning, to middle, and almost to end. Despite this slight disappointment, I still enjoyed the book.

As always, I look forward to the next "The Others" installment.

WOW!!!!!! Christine Warren is on my top five favorite authors. This books starts off fast and keeps up the pace and the heat. I can not get enough of this woman's books. The characters are fantastic, hot and I want one for Christmas :) Really this book was fantastic as are all the books in this series. I never get bored and I can't wait for the the next one (which I already have pre-orderd). In case anyone doesn't already know it's called Hungry like a wolf and is to be released late June 2013. Yeah! I'm passing on the information to all who love her books like I do. This story is based around Rafael the head of the others counsel and Tess, granddaughter to the ex-head of the witches counsel. When they meet it's like an explosion of the senses. As I said, the story starts off fast and the suspense and heat never slow down during the 295 pages of chemistry. Buy this one in book form to keep on your bookshelf because I can promise you...you will want to read this one again.

I will say this was a VERY fast read, even compared to some of the others in the series. As usual there was an intense amount of hilarity, especially with Missy and her girls, and Ms. Warren’s sarcasm and wit shine through once again. I would have loved a longer story with more time for their relationship to develop and deepen before they mate. The connections into the overall plot of the series was interesting, though of course some parts we already know about as this was written on a time scale that was several years before other books that were already read. I think if you read the series in chronological order instead of the publication order like I have you’d enjoy these stories even more, but some of the suspense is just gone this way.

Drive Me Wild finishes up my read of Christine Warren's Others series. Like other reviewers have mentioned, I was a bit surprised at both Tess and Rafael. She is much stronger in the other books and it would be nice to have a book that explains how she grows as a witch. And Rafe, who is suave and debonair in previous books goes all brain dead. Yes, I understand when the blood rushes south that can happen but... I really credited Rafe with more smarts. Even so I enjoyed the book and when new books in the series release, I'll read them. Ms. Warren has a certain "snark" to her writing and her heroines don't take grief from the alpha males in their lives that I find appealing.

My favorite of the series so far. Rafe is a werecat and head of the Council of Others. Tess is a witch.(not a very good witch) who's grandfather is the retired head of the Council of Witches. Rafe has an old family curse. Lots of sex, they break the curse and HEA. Christine Warren make these characters a bit more 3 dimensional than she had in her previous books in this series. I found this more engaging than the previous books and made a better connection with the characters because of it. Rafe is major hunky..Erotica is satisfying for a nice light read. If you enjoy shapeshifters and light erotica..you will enjoy this book.

This book is a rewrite of one of the original erotic novellas that was the genesis for The Others series. I've been looking forward to reading Rafe and Tess's story for quite a while, and enjoyed the book. However, don't expect too much from it. It's just a light, quick, sexy read with a lot of humor in it. The characters aren't very well fleshed out and the plot is simple. It is what it is. The only thing that surprised me is that Christine Warren didn't rewrite the story to make the characters fit with the rest of the series as it developed after this story was originally written. Fans of the series will know what I mean. Just take it with a grain of salt and enjoy Rafe and Tess!

Don't know that I'll get to a 'real' review but... Finished Drive Me Wild (The Others), I don't still have the original (Fur For All) but this story, even in it's longer length, still very much had the sexy feel of that story from what I can remember. I love Rafe and Tess is fun - even if she is often overwhelmed by his intense animal magnetism:) And I always love seeing more of Missy and Graham. So I liked this, even though the story is pretty straight forward and the sexy times start early and occur often - I can't remember if the upcoming Other's installment is going to be another new book or the final rewrite of Warren's original Fixed books.

I've read a couple of others in this series and liked this one by far the least. I like the main characters, but for me there's WAY too much emphasis on the sex scenes (not romance, sex) and not enough on the story. This ought to be a shorter book.
I did like the story but the excessive detail in the sex made me skim that part. I skimmed a lot in this book. I kept looking for more story.
Even though this is a paperback, I'm very glad I got it from the library. I'd hate to have wasted $7.99 (plus tax) on this.

Still mostly enjoying this fun series. This one seemed a little light in that really not much happened but them going to bed like bunnies a whole bunch. It was nicely written and the sex scenes were good but there wasn't much plot. The bad guy was lame and his story hardly developed at all. Also the heroine was a witch and her only power was an ability to see what was going to happen right before it does. This only allowed her to avoid stepping out in front of a bus for example. That's not magic it's psychic ability. Hmmm...

A very quick, light read. Other than a few short scenes there was no real conflict in the book, and the resolution was easily reached. I thought the personality of the male lead was not very fleshed out, that there were a lot of scenes where the female lead was busy being witty while the guy was just wallpaper.

This book... the amount of plot is enough to fill a 30 page novella, the amount of sex and foreplay makes it enough pages for a book. If you're looking for a book that strays perilously close to an erotica, then this is the book for you. But for me? Not what I was looking for when I picked up this book.

Fertility Witch!

Tess is a witch with very little magic but, she does lift a curse bring about a lot of pregnancies in the Felix world.

Rafe is not only the head of The Others Council but also a Felix & he didn't believe in the curse at least not until the end of this book.

But, even before Tess broke the curse that Rafe didn't believe in they didn't know each other yet; Tess was sent as a messenger for the Witches' Council to talk to Rafe but, she winds up stalking him & because she wasn't any good at it he caught her (in more than one way).

This book was very good, had a fight scene, fast-paced action, lots of sex scenes (between Tess & Rafe) & lots of pregnancies with strangers coming up to Tess saying that's it is her fault they they are pregnant. But, you will have to read the book to find out how she does that if she doesn't really have any magic even though she is considered a witch.

Rafe and Tess had amazing chemistry from the first moment they were on the page together. I have been enjoying this series on audio, and Kate Reading has been doing a great job. However, there are times when I wish I had a physical copy, because I'm not sure I would have put the same inflection (in my head) on some parts the way she did.

Still, the book has a lot going for it. The wild chemistry, the smart and sassy Tess, the sexy, alpha Rafe, plus we get to see the gang from the previous books (Mainly Missy & Graham). I only wished that Tess would have slapped the crap out of her grandfather. He is the only person in this story that I wanted to reach through the page and strangle.

He had no respect or even love for his granddaughter and he talked to her like she was someone he hated.

So glad that Tess learned how to deal, and didn't get whinny about it.

"not to brag, but she had a knack for that kind of thing - namely, for turning a simple task into something out of an Abbott and Costello movie."

"Tess sat mesmerized for several minutes before a moth flying perilously close to her cheek reminded her that not only was her mouth gaping open like the legs of a cheerleader on prom night, her tongue was probably hanging out too."

"her mind told her that any further shenanigans with the werecat in the room would lead to bad, bad things. her body told her mind to get lost."

"you all are giving off so much nervous energy its like being trapped in a room with twenty thousand hamsters on meth."

"no i do not see what you mean. i don't even see what language you're speaking. i am so beyond confused that i don't even think i could find my way back with a map."

Not a bad story. We get to see how Rafe (head of the council of others and a werejagaur) and Tess (witch) come together. We've seen them together in other books (she is writing this series out of order. She explains why on her site. He is much more alpha and obsessive in this book than in other books where I've seen them together. Also Tess's grandfather is a complete and under d**k.

I was a little off put by how the lead characters did not express or receive consent in many situations. Sexual arousal is not an expression of consent. I get those reading this book are adults and understand it is fiction but I still prefer to see depictions of proper consent in the books and shows I read.

Definitely a 3.5

Been obsessed with the Others Series for years so this was more of a re-read to get started on finishing books I'd missed in the series.

This is for you if you like paranormal/urban fantasy Romance with two witty, strong-minded (read stubborn) fantastical main characters and a decent amount of 🌶️

Bless whoever recommended this book to me way back when. I loved it. Is it super filthy? No, but the quality of the writing and the smut is great which makes all the difference. Rafael and Tess have scorching hot chemistry. The story is fast paced and there's never really a dull moment in this book.

I'll be checking out the rest of the series now.
