About the author

Stefan Kiesbye has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan. Born on the German coast of the Baltic Sea, he moved to Berlin in the early 1980s. He studied drama and worked in radio before starting a degree in American studies, English, and comparative literature at Berlin’s Free University. A scholarship brought him to Buffalo, New York, in 1996. Kiesbye now lives in Portales, NM, where he teaches Creative Writing at Eastern New Mexico University. His stories and poems have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, and his first book, Next Door Lived a Girl, won the Low Fidelity Press Novella Award.

As twisted, or worse, than Your House is on Fire, this book makes two by this author that I’ve read - and loved. I don’t know what’s wrong with him (in a good way) to be able to craft such utterly disturbing stories, and I’m worried about myself because I love them!

Egad!

If you thought Kiesbye's Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone was dark, well, let's just say THAT one is a rom-com compared to this book. In this one, his first novel, Kiesbye lets rip with a bloody, incest-soaked wallow through the mire.

What a way to grow up!

There is preteen sex, beatings, adults flirting and going nudge-nudge, young boys discovering someone's deepest, darkest secret and then doing a completely WRONG thing as a result, someone suffers a horrific beating and exacts an unbelievably violent revenge. And don't forget the incest!

The worst thing that happened to me growing up was finding really big spiders in my sandbox.

As you might have guessed, this is not the feel-good novel of this or any other year. I cringed and flinched and had to reread entire paragraphs because I couldn't quite believe what I'd just seen. This was a completely absorbing read and a great way to spend a dreary, rainy afternoon...but I wouldn't recommend it for most folks.

fulfilling my 2021 goal to read one book each month by an author i love that i haven’t gotten around to reading yet

okay, so this one might be stretching the monthly goal a bit, since i have only read ONE book by him before (Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone), but

1) i liked it a LOT
2) i needed to honor SPOOKTOBER, and i wasn't seeing anything else in my stacks that qualified
and
3) bestbear melki sent me a stack of kiesbye's books recently, and i am so very grateful to her for that kindness.

Incest. Extortion. Violent beatings. Deviant sex. For lead character Moritz and his gang, The Badgers, these activities are part of a usual day. So is dinner with their parents, riding bikes through their neighborhood, and the occasional brown-nosing of their sixth grade teacher. In the twisted universe of Stefan Kiesbye's Next Door Lived a Girl - selected by Robert Olmstead as winner of the promising young Low Fidelity Press's first Novella Award - The Badgers are both immature children and brutal gangsters. But this is fitting in a setting dominated by two major businesses: a slaughterhouse and a candy factory. In actual scenes, smells, and overall tones, those two seemingly disparate industries say more about the lives of these characters than anything else. The book's chapters are short - it's a quick engaging read - but beware, a sweetly fumbling first kiss in one chapter gives way all too quickly to a boy creepily slathering his father's legs with lotion in another. As a result, there are constant disturbing surprises hidden like rat droppings in a chocolate bar throughout the book. The children of Zuckerberg are not nice or innocent. The parents are not nurturing; they are predatory. Imagine Hansel and Gretl abandoned in the hardscrabble ghettos of an Irvine Welsh novel and forced to learn survival the hard way. This book will charm you even as it turns your stomach. These kids will charm you. And then they'll cut your throat.

Me ha gustado este libro, tiene un aire sombrío y otoñal, así que en estas fechas quedó al dedillo. La estructura argumental es muy parecida al otro libro que leí del autor Puerta al Infierno que me pareció una maravilla. Está dividido en capítulos cortos que al principio parecieran ser cuentos, pero sí hay un hilo argumental que los une conforme avanzas en la lectura.

Esperaba que estuviera presente el terror, pero no se presentó como yo esperaba. Como en la anterior novela que leí del autor el miedo, el horror está en el pueblo y su gente, solamente que en este libro la violencia y el drama familiar se imponen a lo sobrenatural y al horror psicológico, se siente más como una novela negra o criminal. Los niños/adolescentes de entre 12 y 14 años son los protagonistas de sus dilemas existenciales, crisis familiares, despertar sexual y trastornos psicoafectivos.

Hay momentos realmente desgarradores y conmovedores, que plantean una reflexión profunda acerca de esta etapa de la vida. En muchas ocasiones me vi deteniendo la lectura para reflexionar sobre mis propias decisiones, arrebatos y crisis durante mi adolescencia, situaciones que resultan tan bizarras que no entiendo cómo llegué a realizar. Es una etapa de transición y lo que puede salir de ello es determinante en la vida, se queda para siempre, dejando huellas o cicatrices que más adelante se harán presentes en la memoria.

Juego y riñas entre niños, por un lado lo Tejones y por el otro Los Zorros. Los niños se dedican a jugar, hacer travesuras, al descubrimiento sexual, al investigar la zona e investigar por juego. Viven en Alemania, en una zona donde estaba rodeada de bunkers de guerra, ahora convertido en una zona industrial, donde el industria principal es una fábrica de dulces.
Tenemos de narrador a Moritz un niño despierto que por lo regular está fuera de casa con sus amigos ya que la relación con sus papás no es la mejor, su hermana es la que le enseña sus pininos en el despertar sexual. El niño también nos narra su primer amor, la cual es una relación conflictiva ya que ella también sale con uno de su rivales de bandos. En parte de su narración nos cuenta el trabajo que hace en un deshuesadero para poder ganar dinero.
Entre los juegos y curiosidades los niños van a visitar al Sr Henne el cuál les dice ocurrencias y vivencias, al lado vive Freida una señora gruñona mal aliñada, en una de sus andanzas descubren que lo que tiene la Sra Freida es un obscuro secreto el cual los niños se apropian, se hacen cargo y esconden, lo cual les acarrea muchos problemas.
Una novela negra, no tan agradable para mi gusto, medio sucio y denigrante. Crueldad y abusos.
No tanto de mi gusto.

Not for the faint of heart, Next Door Lived a Girl is as darkly disturbing as I expected it might be after having read Kiesbye's longer novel, Your House is On Fire, Your Children All Gone . Familiar themes fill this novel: violence, incest, betrayal. Narrated by Moritz, one of a group of working class boys known as "the Badgers," this brief but terrifying novel tells the story of one boy's emergence from a boyhood devoid of innocence in any true sense of the word into an adolescence of even grimmer proportions. Darkness consumes the characters; violence rules their lives--in an early portion of the book, the Badgers brutally attack and maim one of the Foxes, their rivals. And later the Foxes take their revenge on Moritz, returning brutality with brutality in a wince-inducing attack accompanied by the kidnapping of the Badgers' . . . pet. . . that inspires Moritz to his final, irrevocable act of darkness.

Again, not for the faint of heart. But it will leave you thinking of it for an uncomfortably long time.

Una novela de iniciación sexual, violentamente perturbadora por la normalidad con la que pueden ser vistos el tema del incesto, la locura y la venganza. Todo, en esta novela, tiene un sello demolido: las fábricas, los búnkeres abandonados, las relaciones maritales, la búsqueda del amor y del placer. Esa es creo, uno de los hallazgos del libro: nunca te abandona la sesión de sangre podrida en los labios mientras la lees. La prosa es efectiva, los discursos cortos, las escenas narradas son contadas con precisión y en pocas palabras mientras que el viaje de iniciación sexual contiene las omisiones necesarias para que el lector termine de construir el viaje de esos cuerpos, algunos jóvenes, pero otros sin duda, decrépitos.

When I read "Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone" by Stefan Kiesbye last year I couldn't stop raving about this unsual book. Quick search reveled that his first short novel, Next Door Lived a Girl, was something very hard to come by. Well, almost a year later, I finally got it... and I wasn't disappointed. Like, Your House is on Fire, this is very dark but well written. Kiesbye has a way of showing the dark side of a town and presenting it in a way that makes you cringe, but also question why you can't put it down and stop reading. I enjoy (is that the right word??) this novel, I would suggest reading Your House Is on Fire first, so you understand what you are getting yourself into. I read this on, though only a novella, in under and hour.

I read this book because my boyfriend's brother-in-law is the author and it's loosely based on his life growing up in Germany. However, it's a very dark book and one that leaves you wondering if a world like this really exists.

El mejor libro que he leído en este 2019. Cumplió todas mis altas expectativas.
Este título lo encontré en las recomendaciones de ficción universal de librerías Gandhi. Tanto ellos como muchas otras librerías tienen este libro agotadísimo. Pero ayer lo conseguí y hoy mismo lo terminé de gozar, sí, de gozar.
En este libro vamos a emocionarnos, aterrorizarnos, frustarnos y asquearnos con la vida de un niño pandillero llamado Moritz. Qué manera tan mezquina de describir una sociedad; todos parecen bestias sin conciencia de ningún tipo. El autor nos da a entender que toda esa gente no tiene la menor idea de qué significa la palabra Moralidad. Fornicación, violencia extrema, rebeldía, estupidez y trastornos mentales son los pilares de esta historia.
Si te gusta el terror, el thriller y, además, que sea breve, este libro es perfecto para horrorizarte y asquearte de la humanidad.
Se los recomiendo muchísimo.

Sinopsis: Una serie de relatos siguen la Vida de Moritz y su pandilla de amigos, en donde se entremezclan temas de sexualidad patológica, de crecimiento, de autodescubrimiento.

Una novela con una prosa amena que invita a continuar la lectura, a pesar de que los temas y la forma en la que es contada ha sido abordada en otras novelas ( por ej. "Trainspointing") e inclusive en otros medios (La serie original "Skins" nos ofrece los mismos temas pero de una manera más ingeniosa y relevante).

Si deseas leer por primera vez algo oscuro, perverso y nihilista es un buen punto de comienzo; sin embargo si has leído a Welsh, a Bret Easton Ellis o Chuck Palahniuk, este libro te puede parecer como "más de lo mismo"

De schrijfstijl is fijn, de hoofdstukken te kort. Het boek leest vlot. De setting doet me in het begin denken aan een soort Helaasheid der dingen van Dimitri Verhulst. Echter neemt het verhaal een bizarre wending waarna alleen maar meer rare gebeurtenissen volgen, waaronder het einde. Op dat moment ben je mij kwijt. Kiesbye zet een sterk begin neer, maar glijdt vanaf daar af, jammer.

Gran gran gran novela. Capítulos breves, atractivos, en los que el autor construye una historia que jamás pierde el ritmo. Somos parte de la vida de los Tejones y su descubrimiento del mundo. Me encantó volver a releer tan chingona novela.
