Kirkus MacGowan wrote his first book at age eight about traveling to Mars to find the cure for cancer. He put his writing dreams on hold for twenty-five years and focused his energies on playing baseball. He moved on when he found playing softball with his friends more enjoyable than his pipe dream.
Since then, he graduated with a B.S. in Psychology, married a woman too good to be true, and moved back to his hometown. He gave up an amazing career waiting tables and now stays at home with his two crazy children. He spends his time writing thrillers and fantasy, playing softball with friends, enjoying the occasional computer game, and wrestling with his kids.
I have to admit to something that I’ve never done before, and swore that I would never do. I chose this short story because the cover art was of a gnome. I have a very special place in my heart for gnomes, and have been the surrogate parent to one for over 15 years. Our gnome’s name is Gary the Garden Gnome, and unlike Hedwicket, Fourth Counselor of the Fifth Generation of the Third Company of Gnome Literalists, he just sits there, with his creepy eyes, never conversational and luckily never violent, but after reading In Search of Nectar, now I give him a wide berth and wonder.
This quick little read had me laughing out loud and holding my breath at one moment while boring bachelor Wilburn is taken on an adventure that he’s sure will yield some magical secret to gnome-kind. Plus Hedwicket is pretty prone to violence and everyone knows not to mess with a pissed off garden gnome, so he had no choice.
The adventure is fast paced and had a great resolution, even though I groaned just a bit. I love the idea behind In Search of Nectar, and thought the writing style was precise. MacGowan was really able to fit a lot into a small package. Kind of like gnomes, right?
The one message that I took away from In Search of Nectar is that there are wonderful, pleasing, and accommodating husbands in all walks of life!
Kirkus MacGowan is most definitely on my Reader Radar.
What a cute, imaginative, action packed, & funny little story! Quite different than anything I've read before but well worth the 15 -20 minutes to read it!!
Another quirky and unexpected discovery: Kirkus MacGowan. Tom Stronach mentioned him on his blog, and so I decided to check out one of his stories. In Search of Nectar is very short, very strange, and very free right now on Kindle. (In other words, right on the Penelope Chuckwagon--thanks to Tom for revising the "bandwagon" to the "chuckwagon").
All I will say about this wacky little ditty is that it describes a ridiculous quest by an easily manipulated bachelor, who is convinced by a violence-prone talking garden gnome to find a life-saving elixir. It is also well-written, clever and hilarious. And I freakin' loved it. And I'm going to read his other books.
Grade: A
(It's so short it's not even an amuse bouche. It's more like a couple of crumbs from a Primanti Brothers sandwich. Which is a famous sammie in Pittsburgh where they stuff everything on the bread....the fries, the coleslaw, everything. It's fabulous!)
IN SEARCH OF NECTAR by KIRKUS MACGOWAN is a quirky, laugh out loud funny, short story that I enjoyed immensely and plan to read over and over when I need a good laugh.
Mr. MacGowan introduces us to an accountant, Wilburn G. Walsh, that seemingly has no life until he is given a mission by the wonderfully creative character of Hedwicket, Fourth Counselor of the Fifth Generation of the Third Company of Gnome Literalists.
I was so taken with the imagination and humor that it took to write this story that I can't wait to read more of Mr. MacGowan's work.
I adore gnomes and was very happy to see a short story on them. Author Kirkus Macgowan does not disappoint. In Search of Nectar is wild, fun ride with a great twist at the end. I only took issue with the portrayal of newfoundlands. They are not vicious dogs in the least. They are loyal, loving and in most cases, shy.
That was a really nice and short story. I really enjoyd it and I think that this was the perfect book for summer reading. Funny, with the ability to pass you the whole situation with a touch of psychedelics.
This story is my new favorite guilty pleasure! The writing is crisp and visual. I could see it all playing out in my mind. I loved the absurdity of it all. This is grown up fairy tale that, for reasons I'm not even sure of, totally captivated me.
Wow! I absolutely love this quick and quirky little tale. Sometimes you're in the mood for a short, lighthearted read and author, Kirkus MacGowan certainly does not disappoint! I like the hilariously pitiful, yet endearing Wilburn character as well as the crafty garden gnome (who behaves a lot more like a leprechaun). I would love for this to be made into a series in which Wilburn teams up with other magical creatures. Final word: FUNNY, VERY FUNNY! ;)
It's a perfect story for anyone wanting a good laugh to brighten up the day. I wasn't sure what was going to happen next as some points, especially the ending. I had somewhat of an idea but not in a clear way. It was a great twist at the end that added to the hilarity. I would like to see some more stories of the gnome variety from MacGowan. I'll surely read them, and I look forward to checking out his novel soon.
This was a quick, fun read. With a quirky little storyline, and an enigmatic gnome, what's not to like about a short story? Oh, it certainly isn't the most intriguing gnome story out there, but it had a good enough plot to occupy my time.
