Highland Destiny #2

Highland Pull

Rate this book
Waking up next to a dead woman was a good indication that Dr. Gabhran MacLachlan was in bigger trouble than he’d realized. Recognizing this as another trap set by the dark Druid Master, Gav races from Edinburgh to New Orleans to find Alysone, a mental patient who claims to have awakened in a reality that isn’t hers. Her story, so close to his own, may be the necessary key to unlock his Druid memories and prevent him from shifting realities once again.

When Alysone disappears, Detective Miranda Close is less than thrilled to discover her new landlord and would-be lover is the missing woman’s doctor. Raised in the magick of New Orleans and already familiar with the darkness coiled within Gav, Randi’s belief in the supernatural may be all that saves her life when they are pulled hundreds of years into his past, and only one of them remembers the truth. When realities shift once again, Randi realizes they may be pawns in a much larger game.

The Highland Destiny saga continues with a tale of betrayal, murder, and magick that spans two continents and hundreds of years.

Eh. This was ok. I gave it 3 stars because it was an enjoyable read overall, but I just kept wanting to get through it. Gab is an interesting character what with his dichotomous nature and all and some elements of the book were interesting, but what was a highlander Druid thing became a New Orleans voodoo and witches colliding with Druids thing. Read that last half of the compound sentence again and there you have it. Kinda ridiculous. It was campy while trying to be serious and that never goes well.

Furthermore, and the following is a spoiler...
For the last book, the story built in a way that I could buy the whole "Let's vow our souls to be bound for all eternity because I love you that much." In this one, Really!!??! "Hey, I'm totally super cautious about all men having had a very bad experience and you're my first lover ever and I've only known you (let's call it three weeks to be generous) and you kept me Captive and were a Total Ass to me for two of those weeks, but yes, I would love to vow my soul to you for all eternity."
No f'ing way.

I read this because the first book really stuck with me. I wasn't terribly impressed with it at the time, but I kept remembering the story months later and was finally compelled to re-read it. It's an entertaining bit of fluff. I thought hey, if I remember it that long later, I might as well read the series. It's only 3 books and they're fluffy brainless reads. I wish I'd stopped at book 1.

Why, oh, why I read this installment in the Highland Destiny Saga first, I do not know. The intensely primal, sensual cover perhaps? Who knows. All I DO know is that Highland Pull has…PULLED…me into its spell and now I must go back to the beginning and see where this beautiful tale began.

First of all. No, no. Now you know I don’t talk about plots.

So where does that leave me except with one of the sexiest, most virile, potent, primitive yet ultra sophisticated and suave characters I’ve ever read. Oh, hey, how did Ms. Harner pull THAT off? Oh, I don’t know—just writing talent, I suppose, which this author is brimming with—but she DID pull it off.

Dr. Gabrhran MAcLachlan is the Highlander in this book, who harbors a
dark spirit and is cursed with ‘shifting realities’—i.e., traveling from the contemporary world to ancient Scotland, and he has no control over these changes.

And I have to say this darks spirit was virtually a character of its own, even though we never see it, we only FEEL it inside him. It directs everything Gav does. It loves, hates, fears, cringes, lusts, taunts. It is a frightening yet beautifully described entity.

I thought Gabhran was intensely sexy in his contemporary world, which in this book is set mostly in mysterious, brooding, sultry New Orleans. But when his reality shifts to ancient Scotland we are introduced to the most savagely beautiful Highlander imaginable. Rugged, fearless, unbearably handsome and—oh, yes—a very primal yet tender lover. Hot. Very hot. It’s been a few days since I ‘met’ him, and he is still fresh on my mind.

The heroine, Detective Miranda Close, is Gabhran ‘Gav’s’ lover and the chemistry between them is delectable and the sex scenes range from wonderfully primitive to exquisitely gentle and oh so sensual.

There are supporting characters—very sexy Liam and his beautiful tormenter/lover, Marie. And the erotic scenes between these two, filled with vivid and titillating voodoo and black magic, was enough to make me ask the author to please give us more of the pair.

Like I said, the book was fabulous, romantic, sensual, panoramic in its descriptions of both worlds (modern New Orleans and the primitive world of Scottish Highlands).

Unforgettable.

Review: 3 stars
General: This book definitely took a different turn than first, but not in a bad way. The first was very plot focused, even though it was a little long. This one split into multiple plots and characters while gaining a strong focus on sex. The book had a much strong erotic undertone than the previous - but the action and fantasy were all still present. I loved returning to the world, even if there is really no connection to the first in this one. (great if you read this one first too!)

I felt the storyline was both extremely original and entertaining and confusing and all over the place at the same time. While reading it was apparent work was being done to set up for the next novel (something that didn't happen in the first so I was a bit jarred to see these were different characters). So while the main plot was wonderful and super engaging, I felt a little taken out between the overuse of sex scenes and multiple plots. I would have liked to seen a stronger focus on the main storyline - many authors do this and JR Ward is one I can think of off the bat so while it's not a bad thing it's not for me.

I still truly loved the world building and the story. It was well thought out and crafted, some editing issues took me out however I think it's important for indie authors to be careful of such things. I definitely recommend this book and can't wait to see who we have in the next one.

Characters: Miranda- I liked Miranda. She was an interesting take on a stereotype and it made me happy. She wasn't the tough independent cop that is completely overused. Instead she was confident and good at her job but seeking solace with someone else. Her connection with Gav was sizzling.
Gav- Gav was intriguing. His connection with Miranda was absolutely present. But he wasn't the sexy alpha male I was hoping he would be. I was so ready for alpha male scientist. He's a little on the crazy side due to a spoiler I won't share and it made him fun to read but I didn't fall in love with him.

This series definitely has to be read in order.
Gabhran left Scotland in a hurry. Now he is in New Orleans. The darkness that invaded him at the Beltane is causing him an anger management problem. The magic in New Orleans makes him feel welcome. But he has come for a reason. There is a woman that has told her doctors she has memories of other times. He has often felt the same.
What he doesn't know is he has been followed by a very dangerous Druid.
Miranda is a New Orleans detective. Her new landlord is setting of all sorts of alarm bells in her mind. He is handsome, sexy and good company sometimes. Other times she senses a darkness about him.
So how will a Druid cope in the city of Voodoo.? Will the interference of a Voodoo Queen improve things or make them worse. ?
This story is a lesson in why you should not play around with time travel, it can confuse things. We skip about in time and somebody has personality problems.
A fascinating read that keeps you enchanted all the way through.
I'm glad I have the next book because I can't wait to read it.

SO MANY characters, and tons of settings, but I must say, IT'S SO GOOD! You won't want to stop reading until you've figured everything out! And of course, I must begin the next book straight away, because I still have a lot of unanswered questions about all of their futures!

I thought the first book in this series Highland Shift was good this was even better. When I was first introduced to a doctor named Gabhran I was in awe of such a strong man. He had to constantly fight the taint of evil and yet had never given in. When I started to read and noticed that Highland Pull would be his story I couldn’t start reading fast enough.

Gabhran, or Gav to his friends, is a man displaced through time who finds himself fighting a dark seed or spirit trying to take him over. With no real knowledge of who he is he has to try and follow his moral compass no matter how beat up it becomes. He travels across the globe to find answers in instead finds his soul mate, his partner, his love. After being torn apart the are brought back together and form a bond that is unbreakable and needed in the fight against evil.

Miranda or Randi as people call her is a detective who is really great at her job. She can read people but has no idea she has powers of her own. Growing up in a very strong Voodoo community she understands that magkic is real but fears that the trait skipped her. Strong willed and a fighter she is the perfect companion for her fierce highland druid.

I could never tell what was coming next, always a surprised. I found myself stopping to rethink about what I had just read and see if I could figure out what the end game was. Some of the villains tricked me and some of the heroes turned out to be not so good. I am still unsure about one character and can’t wait to read her story or at least find out if she is good or bad.

The series continues with the characters from book one. But we also get to meet some great new characters in this one. Dr. Gabhran MacLachlan travels to New Orleans in search of a a mental patient named Alysone because her story is so much like his. When Alysone goes missing detective Miranda Close is put on the case to investigate it. Finding out her new landlord is also Alysone's doctor make her suspicious of him. The attraction between the two is strong. Staying close to Gabhran they both shift back hundreds of years to the past. Gabhran is different but Miranda is not ready to give up on him and fights to get the Gabhran she got to know in New Orleans back. Evil is always out there working against them and they have to be strong and fight back. The fight to save the world and the druids continues. I loved this book as much as the first one in the series and look forward to future books in this series.

WARNING: once you begin, you will be hooked and lose sleep.
You will not want to do anything else until you know what happens next.
Must read this series in order.

This time rushing from Scotland to New Orleans, U.S. to compare Alysone's story with his own, and memories of a different time, Dr.Gabhran MacLachlan has no idea what will be in store for him. His druid past comes up against New Orleans witchcraft, voodoo, and the dark spirit we all feel as we are engrossed in the story.
Detective Miranda Close grew up with New Orleans voodoo culture and has psychic powers of her own. Something about Dr. Gab, her landlord, triggers her senses. Good at her job, Randi also shows vulnerability.

Why not 5 stars? There was a bunch of different stories going on it was hard to keep track. I enjoyed Gav from the 1st book, and was happy to learn about him. It was also nice to have Faolan and Elena back and weaved into the books as well. I can't wait to see what happens w/Alex & Lissa, hopefully a HEA

All in one

This boo was cool because it was so many stories in one. Not just a second part with different people that would connect but all the main characters that we have come to know and more from the first book.
