Marthanda Varma was the founding monarch of the southern Indian Kingdom of Travancore. This is the first among the three novels C.V. wrote on the Travancore royal family.


The jealousy of the Ettuveetil Pillas towards Marathanda Varma’s rise to power and the rift between them forms a major part of this novel. Marthanda Varma was a ruler who became a pioneer in many things in the history of Travancore, so as this novel by C.V. The historical perspective of this novel is pretty solid and will be a guiding force for many who are interested to know more about Kerala in the 19th century.

If you are someone who loves to read historical fiction, this is a book that you should never miss.

The most common garb that a reader can associate with the title of a King is that of opulence. There is an aura of power, decisive action and decadence that radiates from Kings of old. Well then, this is the story of a King who was trying hard just to survive the machinations of the feudal lords of his realm. A plot line that is hardly a novelty ain't it ? There is however a distinguishing factor to this novel : It was written in 1891 and is more fact than fiction.

The King's name is the namesake of the novel. Marthandavarma was the ruler who ruled over the Travancore region of Kerala as a representative of the Travancore family. The area of Travancore was spread across a rough 20,000 square km space and encompassed a major chunk of Southern Kerala. When the story begins though, the King (who is a crown prince at that time) is on the run from the assassins of powerful feudal lords and his murderous relatives. The story progresses through a lot of digressions and side tracks to Marthanda Varma's rise to power and his ascension to the throne. There are a lot of fictional and real characters in this and the way the story is constructed is a fine intermeshing of fact and fiction. The assassination attempt on the life of the Prince by the Ettuveetil Pillas ( translates into : The Pillas of the Eight houses) is something that history has been witness to. With the aid of his trusted and devoted subjects, Marthanda Varma overcomes all the hardships and becomes the first ruler of the kingdom of Travancore by the end of the tale. The rest is literally history !

To me, this was not just a novel but had a lot many layers to it. Firstly, it is more of a pioneer in the field of Malayalam literature. There could probably be no erudite reader or writer of Malayalam who has not tried his/her hands at C.V's works. This was the first historical novel in Malayalam and perhaps the first to speak out indirectly about the intrusion of foreigners into India and Kerala.

Secondly, it offers a very deep view of the Malayali society in the 1800's. C.V spends pages describing architecture, attire, social and religious rituals and practices, language and the lay of the land. My own town of Trivandrum forms a backdrop of this story and the place of today has not even the slightest semblance with what is mentioned in the tale. The places all have the same names but the appearances are beyond wildest imaginations. If C.V came alive today, he would be entirely disoriented in a walk of five minutes.

Thirdly and most importantly is the language used which is rather unique. Even for a native speaker like me, the language is too convoluted to understand. It is Malayalam with a strong smattering of Tamil (geographically and linguistically it's neighbor)and is quite archaic. Even after finishing this book, my confidence level with the dialog is perhaps a scanty 65%. The exhaustive glossary at the end of the book is a blessing for this simple reason.

For it's ingenuity and it's pathbreaking arrival into the then nascent field of Malayalam literature, this is a story to be marvelled at. In an overall view, it should be called a text of history than a novel.

മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യ ചരിത്രാഖ്യായി എന്ന നിലയില്‍ തികച്ചും പ്രാധാന്യമര്‍ഹിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പുസ്തകമാണ് സി. വി. രാമന്‍ പിള്ള എഴുതിയ "മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മ." മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മ മഹാരാജാവിന്‍റെ സ്ഥാനരോഹണവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട 2 വര്‍ഷത്തെ സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ മനോഹരമായും അച്ചടക്കത്തോടും കൂടി കോര്‍ത്തിണക്കി ഉദ്വേഗജനകമായി CV വര്‍ണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.ആദ്യ ചരിത്ര നോവല്‍ എന്നതിലുപരി മലയാളത്തില്‍ ഇന്നും അധികം കണ്ടു പരിചയം ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു ആഖ്യാന രീതി ഗ്രന്ഥകര്‍ത്താവ് അവലംബിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. നോവലിന്‍റെ ആദ്യം തന്നെ ഇതു എടുത്തു പറയുന്നുമുണ്ട്. ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലെ “Historical Romance” എന്ന സമ്പ്രദായം അനുകരിച് ഒരു നോവല്‍ മലയാളത്തില്‍ കൊണ്ട് വരാനാണ് തന്റെ ശ്രമം എന്ന് തുടക്കത്തിലെ പീഠിക എന്നാ ഭഗത് പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മലയാളത്തിന്‍റെ
മൂന്നാമത്തെ മാത്രം നോവല്‍ എന്ന നിലയില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ഈ ഉദ്യമം സാഹസികമായതും അത്യന്തം അഭിനന്ദനം അര്‍ഹിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഏത് ഉദ്യമത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രമിച്ചുവോ, അത് വളരെയധികം വിജയിച്ചു എന്നു പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാകും.

സാധാരണ ഒരു നോവല്‍ വായനക്കാരനു മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മ അല്പം കഠിനമായി തോന്നാം. നോവലിസ്റ്റിന്‍റെ ആഖ്യായന രീതി ചില നേരങ്ങളില്‍ കുഴക്കുന്നതും ആയി കാണാം. മലയാള ഭാഷയില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുള്ള പാണ്ഡിത്യവും ആഖ്യാന രീതിയിലെ അസാമാന്യ കഴിവും ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ആധുനിക വായനക്കാരെ അല്പ നേരത്തേക്കെങ്കിലും കുഴക്കും എന്നതില്‍ സംശയമില്ല. മലയാളം, തമിഴ് എന്നിവ ഇടകലര്‍ന്നുള്ള ഭാഷ സന്ദര്‍ഭം വര്‍ണ്ണിക്കുന്നതിനു ഉചിതമായ രീതിയില്‍ തന്നെ പ്രയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മ യുവരാജാവിന്‍റെ രണ്ടു കൊല്ലത്തെ ചരിത്രം കൃത്യതയോടെയും ഉദ്വേഗതോടെയും നമുക്ക് പറഞ്ഞ തരാന്‍ ഗ്രന്ഥകാരനു സാധിക്കുന്നു. മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മയും, എട്ടു വീട്ടില്‍ പിള്ളമാരും മറ്റും ഉള്‍പെടുന്ന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളില്‍ സുഭദ്ര എന്ന സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രം ഏറെ പ്രാധാന്യം അര്‍ഹിക്കുന്നതാണ്. അവരെ ഈ കഥയുടെ ആത്മാവ് എന്ന് തന്നെ നമുക്ക് പറയാം. ഭാരതം ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്‌ ഭരണത്തില്‍ ആയിരുന്ന കാലത്തെ സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്‌കാരെ പൂര്‍ണമായി ഒഴിവാക്കി ആ കാലത്തെ കേരള സംസ്കാരവും ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രവും വ്യക്തമായി C V നമുക്ക് കാട്ടിത്തരുന്നു.

അമിതമായ കഥാപാത്ര വര്‍ണനകള്‍ ആദ്യ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ ധാരാളമായി കാണാമെങ്കിലും ആദ്യകാല മലയാള നോവല്‍ സമ്പ്രദായം വളര്‍ന്നു വന്നു തുടങ്ങാത്ത ഒരു സമയത്ത് എഴുതപ്പെട്ടത് എന്ന നിലയ്ക്കും നോവല്‍ എന്നാ കഥാപാരായണ രീതി മലയാളത്തില്‍ വളര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കുന്നതില്‍ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സ്ഥാനം “മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മ” നോവലിനു ഉണ്ടെന്നതിനാല്‍ ഒരു പോരായ്മയായി അതില്‍ ഒന്നും തന്നെ പറയാന്‍ നമുക്ക് ആകില്ല. ഏറെ ആസ്വദിപ്പിക്കുനതും ഉദ്വേഗപൂര്‍വം പിടിച്ചിരിത്തുന്നതുമായ ഒരു നോവല്‍ തന്നെയാണ് ഇത്. സി. വി. രാമന്‍ പിള്ളയുടെ ഈ നോവല്‍ മഹത്തായ ഒരു വായനാനുഭവം എന്നതിലുപരി തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരു എത്തിനോട്ടം കൂടെയാണ്.

Historical fiction never disappoints! Written in 19th century and the plot set in 18th century, it gives the reader much insights into Kerala in those ages. There are so many characters. The strong, the virtuous, the loyal and the nefarious are all present. They speak different dialects of Malayalam based on their backgrounds. As one would expect, the general style of language itself is different from the contemporary literature. There is also ample use of Tamil and Sanskrit. Imaginations and embellishments of literary nature are lavish. A story telling is non linear. There are many similar named characters. There are many wheels that turn the plot. From a reader's point of view, these very characteristics that make this book rich also make it hard to read. It is a very good idea to buy an annotated edition as it may help the reader from not getting confused and stay on the track.

I tried, I really tried. But even for a native malayalam speaker in me, getting through this was tough. Part of it being a century old archaic dialect of the language, which has fast become obscure in this day and age. Part of it being the meandering story, with no clear hook to latch onto.

The novel is a relevant piece of literature in the history of Malayalam language. It contains several words and phrases which harken back to another time and way of living. As well as describing the customs and ways of life of the people at the time. It is also one of the pioneers in the language in the genre of historical fiction. But unless you’re a dedicated connoisseur who wishes to explore this niche piece of fiction, for academic or avocational value.

Otherwise, you’re better off reading the wikipedia article.

1891 ല്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച നോവലാണ് മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മ. രാമ്മവര്‍മ്മ മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണകാലം മുതല്‍ മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മയുടെ സ്ഥാനാരോഹണം വരെയുള്ള തിരുവിതാംകൂറിന്റെ ചരിത്രം വിവരിക്കുന്നു. മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മയെ തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ രാജസ്ഥാനഭ്രഷ്ടനാക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി പത്മനാഭന്‍തമ്പിയും എട്ടുവീട്ടില്‍പിള്ളമാരും പദ്ധതികൾ തയ്യാറാക്കുന്നു. അതിൽ നിന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ അനന്തപത്മനാഭന്‍, സുഭദ്ര, മാങ്കോയിക്കല്‍കുറുപ്പ് എന്നിവർ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. ധർമ്മരാജാ എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തെക്കാട്ടിലും അല്പംകൂടി മനസ്സിലാവുകയും ആസ്വദിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നു ഈ പുസ്തകം.

സി വി രാമന്പിള്ളയുടെ "ചരിത്രാഖ്യായികളിൽ" ആദ്യത്തേതാണ് മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മ. 1707 മുതൽ 1729 വരെ തിരുവിതാംകൂറിൽ നടക്കുന്ന, മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മയുടെ കിരീടധാരണത്തിൽ കലാശിക്കുന്ന സംഭവപരമ്പരയാണ് ഇതിവൃത്തം. ചരിത്രാഖ്യായി എന്ന് പറയാമെങ്കിലും കൽക്കിയുടെ പൊന്നിയിൻ സെൽവന്റേത് പോലെ സാങ്കല്പികമായുള്ള കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും കഥയുടെ പുരോഗതിക്കായി ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട്, ചരിത്രാഖ്യായി എന്നതിലുപരി ഇതിനെ ഒരു നോവൽ എന്നാണ് പരിഗണിക്കാൻ തോന്നിയത്.

മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മയുടെ പിന്മുറക്കാരനായ മൂലം തിരുനാൾ ഭരിച്ചിരുന്ന കാലത്തു പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ നോവൽ ആയതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ "തിരുവായ്ക്കെതിർവാ"യായി ഒന്നും തന്നെ കഥയിൽ കാണാനില്ല. പ്രതിനായകസ്ഥാനത്തുള്ള എട്ടുവീടരുടെ ലഹളയ്ക്കുള്ള കാരണമോ, തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെയും തെക്കൻ കേരളത്തിലെയും രാഷ്ട്രീയ കാലാവസ്ഥയിലുള്ള മാറ്റങ്ങളോ അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ നോവലിൽ പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നില്ല. അധികാരക്കൊതിയനും വഷളനുമായ പത്മനാഭൻ തമ്പിയുടെ ദുരാഗ്രഹമാണ് സർവ്വതിനും കാരണമായി ചിത്രീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. തമ്പിയുടെ അധികാരമോഹത്തെ മുതലാക്കിയാൽ തങ്ങളുടെ പ്രതാപം അരക്കിട്ടുറപ്പിക്കാം എന്ന അനുമാനത്തിൽ എട്ടുവീടർ മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മയെ വകവരുത്താൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു എന്നാണ് നോവലിൽ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ, എട്ടുവീട്ടിൽ പിള്ളമാരുടെ പേരിൽ ആരോപിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പലതിനും തെളിവുകൾ ഇല്ലെന്ന് പില്കാലത്തുള്ള ചരിത്രകാരന്മാർക്കിടയിൽ ഒരഭിപ്രായവുമുണ്ട്. പത്മനാഭൻ തമ്പിയെയും രാമൻ തമ്പിയെയും പദ്മനാഭപുരം കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ വച്ച് കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതും, ഇതിൽ മനം നൊന്ത് അവരുടെ സഹോദരി ഉമ്മിണി തങ്കച്ചി ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്തതും സൗകര്യപൂർവ്വം നോവലിൽ തമസ്കരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ചരിത്രം വാണവരുടേതു മാത്രമല്ല, വീണുപോയവരുടേതുകൂടിയാണ് എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് "മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മ" എന്ന നോവലിനെ പരക്കെ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് പോലേ ചരിത്രത്തോട് നീതി പുലർത്തുന്ന ഒരു കൃതി ആയി കാണുന്നത് ഉചിതമാണോ എന്ന് സംശയിക്കേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

പണ്ടൊരിക്കൽ വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി ഭാഷയുടെ കാഠിന്യം കൊണ്ട് ഇടയ്ക്ക് നിർത്തിയതാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. ഇപ്പോൾ മനു എസ് പിള്ളയുടെ ദി ഐവറി ത്രോൺ എന്ന പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ വീണ്ടും ഒന്ന് വായിച്ച്‌ തുടങ്ങാൻ തോന്നി. ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനു മുൻപ് എഴുതപ്പെട്ട കൃതി ആയതു കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ഭാഷയുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ ഇന്നത്തെ മലയാളവുമായി ചെറുതല്ലാത്ത അന്തരമുണ്ട്. അത്ര സാധാരണമല്ലാത്ത, സംസ്കൃതജന്യമായ വാക്കുകളുടെ അതിപ്രസരമുള്ളത് കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ മറ്റേതൊരു മലയാള നോവലും വായിക്കുന്ന അതെ ലാഘവത്തോടെ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാൻ കഴിയുമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നില്ല. കഥ നടക്കുന്ന തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തിന്റെയും പരിസരപ്രദേശങ്ങളുടെയും ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രപരമായ വിവരണങ്ങളും, ചെമ്പകശ്ശേരി, മാങ്കോയിക്കൽ, ചാരോട് മുതലായ ഗൃഹങ്ങളുടെ സുദീര്ഘങ്ങളായ വിവരണങ്ങളും ആകർഷകമായി തോന്നി. സിനിമ പ്രചാരത്തിലില്ലായിരുന്ന കാലമായതുകൊണ്ടായിരിക്കണം വളരെയധികം ശ്രദ്ധയോടെയും വിസ്തരിച്ചുമുള്ള എഴുത്ത് മനസ്സിൽ നേരിട്ട് കണ്ട പോലെയുള്ള അനുഭവം നൽകുന്നു. ശങ്കു ആശാൻ പറയുന്ന തിരുവനന്തപുരം ചുവയുള്ള മലയാളം ഒരു കൗതുകമായിരുന്നു. പഠാണികൾ ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനിയിലാണ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ആ ഭാഷയിലുള്�� സംഭാഷണങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും നോവലിൽ ഇല്ല.

Narrates the travails undertaken by the loyal Ananda Padmanabhan to place his friend and Prince Marthandavarma on the throne. The titular Prince makes only a few cameo appearances. The characters come in a variety of shades,ranging from the wily Ananda Padmananabhan who dons a number of disguises as he fakes his death, his scheming sister Subhadra -the firebrand who throws her support to the Prince's cause as a means of taking her Revenge on the Prince's Rival.She's way more interesting than the demure girlfriend. Then there's the fiendish Rival cum Cousin of the Prince and his sly henchman Sundaram and finally the Nobles of the Eight Houses. The language in the Malayalam edition is archaic with a liberal sprinkling of Tamil.The English version is way more simple.The author takes a lot of liberties with the real history and this can rightly be called Historical Fiction. However the quaint customs and traditions and the general atmosphere of the Kingdom at the time, the relationships especially the inheritance from Uncle to the Nephew all make this novel different. This novel is the first of the trilogy followed by Dharmaraja and Ramaraja Bahadur. However the sequels have nothing to do with the plot of this novel and are about the conspiracies faced by the next King in the Dynasty.

A treat to ears. I listened to the audiobook from Storytel. Excellent and skilful narration made it an excellent experience. You will get to know about the culture of the Southern Kerala during that period. Entertaining historical romance; a page-turner.

The title of the novel is a bit misleading. The king is very nearly a non entity in the narrative.
The novel is not about the course of events that led to the establishment of modern travancore.
It is the story of a few loyal subjects of the king who helped the king through their selfless service and sacrifice. These characters were so intricately woven into the historic course of events that often generations of readers took them for real men and women who may have lived during that time.
What is more astonishing is the command of the author in a number of regional dialects of malayalam spoken by different communities, along with tamil and sanskrit.
Perhaps all this makes the work a frequent subject of research.
Perhaps the most researched literary work in Malayalam.
Second full fledged novel in the history of malayalam literature after Indulekha.
Undoubtedly the author is malayalam's Sir Walter Scott, or perhaps even better...
Nevertheless, the author's two sequels after this work have more delicious imagination and naration. Only challenge being that the reader must become atleast half C V Raman Pillai to comprehend and appreciate those two works.

I came across some pages of the book when I had to study it in my 10th standard. A brilliant story that shows the conspiracy and the brilliant plans that lead to the victory of the King against "Ettuveettil pillamar". The book is inspired from real story of the king, Marthandavarma. But the character that attracted me was Subadra. She has got a powerful character, a brave and brilliant woman, who goes against her uncles to protect the king. Its her plans that always helped the king. Her death was also one that suited for a hero. She is very inspiring for any woman.
