A little about myself...
My husband Joe and I live in the still wild open spaces about two hours northwest of Dallas. Our days are filled with business and our nights are usually spent working on a project together somewhere around the house or yard. We have two amazing adult kids out doing their part to make the world a better place, by the grace of God.

So, with the house feeling too quiet, we (read: I) decided we needed to find a baby cat we could dote on (and I could hold like a baby from time to time.)

And there he was. I saw him in an online ad.
He was one of 25 kittens born to a feral colony. It was love at first sight!
That was two years ago, and now the runt-of-the-litter who had to be bottle fed by the rescue volunteers, has blossomed into a handsome, super fluffy, 17lb Maine Coon named "Atlas the Destroyer!"***

He earned his name by freaking out the instant he came home to us. The rescue volunteer released him from his kitten-sized pet carrier carefully, trying to ease him into the unfamiliar environment, but the kitty had other ideas.

The scrawny flash of fur leaped up on the kitchen counter sending papers and dishes flying, dashed across the knobs of the stove, and sprang straight up in the corner of the cabinets, disappearing for an instant before landing eight feet up on top of the cabinets with a soft thud of his paws, and one more crash.

All this happened in less than 10 seconds!

I looked around at the destruction left in the wake of that frightened big-pawed, baby cat.

Dishes were broken on the floor, and freshly notarized documents were torn up. One of the burners on the stove glowed red hot as he must have turned it on running across the knobs, and the biggest Houdini move of all... We didn't even know how he jumped up and through the cabinets until we looked. Sure enough, there was a six-inch-by-six-inch opening in the back corner of the cabinets where they met.

Hence "Atlas the Destroyer" pretty much named himself.

So, a bit of a news flash, I changed careers (aka my day job) and with a wistful but ready heart, I hung up my kindergarten teacher's paint-covered apron and moved into a whole different career field.

But even though I no longer have to wear machine-washable clothes (in hot, with Clorox) to teach, I still have not given up my need to be surrounded by positivity, creativity, and light.

It's been a minute since I've released a novel, but don't worry. I've got something in the works and will share as soon as possible.

I do hope you're well and enjoying all the small things rather than taking them for granted. Small things, like a wild, scrawny, kitten, can cure the most cynical if given the chance.

With heartfelt prayers for humanity, I fervently work toward doing my part to return to an era of God-loving, hard-working, persevering, responsible, faith-filled Americans who treat others the way they want to be treated.

Respectfully,
Karen Luellen

***That was to have been read in a booming, echo-y, warrior's bellow that left everyone's ears ringing and tails tucked!

So, go ahead. Try it again. I'll wait.

"Atlas the DESTROYYYEEERRR!!!"

*grin*

(Or you can call him Attie for short - especially when approaching meekly holding a Costco-sized bag of salmon-flavored treats.)

Gerr!! That ending has me all kinds of upset right now! I wish I had waited till the next book was out before I read this one. I couldn't help myself though, I found this series not long ago and I'm officially hooked!

I'm not going to reveal any spoilers here, just talk about the characters. This book came at you hard from the first page to the last. There was so much going on and my heart was racing the entire time. I felt so much heartache in this book and so many characters seemed to be emotionally transformed. I love Meg, Alik and Evan! They all add something unique to the story and each one of them has a lot of depth as a character. I absolutely love Creed!!! My heart was breaking for him and I can not wait to see him get the happy ending he deserves with Meg. Once again Margo was a stable rock for the family. She holds so much strength and love in her "human" body, I don't know how anyone could dislike her. I was also upset with Cole in this book. He obviously thinks with his heart and not his head and in his case this proves to be a huge character flaw. I do like him but I'd like to see him do some serious growing up! I guess we'll see how he turns out later. I found that I grew attached to Gavel and Farrow as well and I thought they were a great addition to the cast.

I can not wait for Williams to get what's coming to him! What a sick creature he is!!! The mental picture painted in this book is just disgusting! I can't imagine looking at someone as gross as him... Yuck!! But a job well done on making him look on the outside as ugly as he is on the inside!

Overall this series has been a blast and I'm so looking forward to the next book!!! I'm officially a huge Winter's (& friends) fan!!! 5 wonderful stars!!!

This one doesn't let up on the action either, and just keeps driving right to the end. I was Team Cole for just a bit while reading, until he went all stupid or something. It was kind of hard to pull for him after that. Now I just want to shake him and ask what he was thinking. I just wanted to hug poor Creed, he's been through so much. Not even sure what I'd do to Williams, because I just can't think of anything bad enough, so I'm trusting Karen to come up with something hideous for such a hideous man. If I didn't hate him already, this book would have put me firmly in the "I hate Williams" corner. I liked seeing Alik develop more, and look forward to even more from him and Evan.

The characters in this were alright at times, but they really got on my nerves at others.

This one was a bit longer than the last one, so it seemed to drag more. I was pretty relieved to get to the end.

4.5 stars

I've been following this action-packed series, watching to see what will happen next. Winter's Wrath: Sacrifice did not disappoint! Dr. Williams reaches all new levels of evil, Meg's evolving powers have made her an emotional powder keg, and Cole's injecting himself with the Infinity serum has unexpected results. Romances bloom everywhere, and the love triangle between Meg, Cole, and Creed becomes even more complicated.

First I'll explain why this review is 4.5 stars. For me, I missed a lot of the action that was present in the first three books. Most of it happened toward the end, and we spent a lot of time dealing with Meg's emotional stuff. I get that emotion is part of her ability. But after a while I wanted my girl to stop passing out and get up and kick some butt like she did in the other books! However, she seems to find her own in the end, which I loved and it made me excited for book 4. I also would have liked to see more going on with Alik as I can sense him growing as a meta and a person. I hope there's more of him in book 4.

Cole began to come across as a bit selfish, but hey, he's a teenager. What teenager isn't selfish, especially when it comes to love. I'll be interested to see how things evolve, although at this point, I am squarely in Creed's corner. For me, he is the shining star of this book. Ever since I was introduced to him in book 2, I've been in love with him. My love lives on! Team Creed!

Overall, this book is solid and entertaining, a fun read for young adults and grownups alike. The story continues, and I'll be waiting to see what develops next!

I'm not finished yet, but I am not happy with Cole. I know he was in pain from the gun shot wound and having to watch Meg with Creed had to hurt, but he certainly didn't think about what he was doing when he injected himself with the Infinity serum. It appeared that he wouldn't have survived without Meg's help. I have to give him a bit of a break since he's only 16. But I certainly prefer Creed over Cole for Meg even though they both seem totally devoted to her. I was heart broken for a bit when he detonated the lab and house....
I like the addition of Farrow as part of the family, and a love interest for Alik, and am wondering about Gavil.... He's starting to question and the scene where he doesn't beat Creed was an eye-opener.... What is he really up to???

Update:
Now finished. WOW - What a cliff hanger!!! I knew something was up with Gavil, too bad he had to die. Slider was such a twist, wasn't expecting that. I feel really bad for Cole, but Creed was right, he was extremely selfish. I can see why Meg started getting closer with him, she thought Creed was lost to her forever. I hate that Cole is in the hospital fighting for his life and they separated the families, but I didn't want the love triangle. I am so tired of the love triangle.....

I cannot wait for the next installment. How will Meg use her ability now that she's not afraid of it anymore? When will Alik and Evan start to elvolve? Are they able to rescue the little doctor and do she and Evan connect? I NEED TO KNOW THESE THINGS!!!!

After reading books 1 & 2 of this series, I didn't know if the author could keep up the pace! The answer: YES! She can!

The Winter family, having been on the run is going on the offensive against the evil and demented Dr. Williams. The 'family' is also growing as more Metahumans see what it is like to feel the love and compassion the Winters all share freely.

Meg's abilities have 'evolved' and she is able to get into people's heads, take their darkest feelings and ease their pain. Poor girl, she is also caught between two boys who can't help but love her.

Talk about being in the middle of the action! I feel I know these characters personally and could vouch for every one of them! The twists and turns of this series show an amazing gift on the part of the author who is not afraid to give the characters the strength to kill, as well as the strength to pray for the courage NOT to kill. The writing is colorful and detailed. These kids have won my heart, so the cliffhanger at the end was brutal for me, but well-done!

Just finished this and already digging into Part 4!! When I first got this series it was as a freebie from kindle and I saw that it was a YA paranormal but there was a comment on how good it was. And boy oh boy is it ever! I love how the evil the modern day Hilter dude is and I love the wonderful Winters family and all the new characters being added. I especially love how the Author keeps faith and God in the picture 1st and foremost along with all the action and bizarreness. If I could I would have given this series 6 stars. Do give this series a look see because its not some high school vamp story there's some real meat n bones here to dig into! :-)

First of all I have to say I am so mad at Cole, he is so selfish and I am borderline not liking him anymore, ugh..anyway. As for the rest of the book it was awesome as usual and Meg is such a bada** with her new powers-love it. Not so patiently waiting on the fourth book, come on October!

Wow! I thought that the first 2 were good books, this one had you on pins and needles through the whole book and then left you hanging at the end . . . . what a cliffhanger. I'm just going to have to get the 4th, 5th, and 6th book now, so that I don't have to worry about the cliffhangers.

I could not put this book down, I was quickly turning pages to find out what happened to Meg and Creed and to see if they escaped the island safely. It is the ultimate story of survival and betrayal. Questions are answered as to whether blood is thicker than water and if love can conquer all in the end. All the characters are so well fleshed out that you become invested in their story and hope with them that they can achieve the impossible. You feel love, sorrow, hope and despair at the circumstances they are forced to endure. Meg is one of my favorite's as she has come so far from being an insecure little girl terrified of her gift and becomes a confident woman who will fight to the death for those she loves learning to accept herself and her empathetic powers. Creed is endearing as the tough macho Meta who has never know love yet craves it more than life itself. Cole is the third person in the triangle, a gentle soul who has loved Meg since day one yet she feels drawn to Creed. What a cliffhanger, I wish the 4th book was finished already and while I don't want to give too much away, I am anxious to find out if all the children make it out of the facility alive.

A Winter’s War

Reluctant soldiers in this war
They know what they are fighting for
Family, Freedom, the right to choose
This is a fight they cannot lose.

Metahumans made to be controlled
To the highest bidder they would be sold
Rescued by Margo to foil Dr Williams plan
They escaped to get the upper hand.

Meg’s an Empath with a heart of gold
Always bringing strays to their fold
She can reach out and feel another’s pain
Giving them peace so that hope remains.

Alik always excels to be the best
Fighting hard to protect the rest
His perfect memory is a great tool
The slightest detail he can recall

Evan’s a wiz and the youngest one
His transformation has just begun
Computers, medicine and research too
Nothing is too hard to do.

Creed is a soldier, tough and strong
By Meg’s side is where he belongs
He is something of a genetic anomaly
Turning off his pain as it sets him free

Bonded by love and to do what’s right
They have no choice but to stand and fight
Evil is out there and it’s tired of waiting
They must make their move, no hesitating.

Love and sacrifice is what it will take
Tough decisions they’ll be forced to make
Will they lose the battle before they start
Nothing and no-one will tear them apart.

Thanks Karen for bringing the Winter Clan into my world, look forward to the next one. :)

What?!? Oh man, so many developments in this book! You also get some recurring characters and new ones too. You also get to see what happened to some of the other characters since the last book left off.

The action is escalating, but so is the toll it is taking on the Winter family&associates. The evil Dr Williams is also amping it up in a scary way, and he is a seriously smart dude. The characters are still relatable, likable, and realistic (well, as realistic as they can be). There was much more God-talk and praying in this book, but overall that didn't bother me as it was mostly praying in an "I hope this works out" type way and less as a God-does-everything-for-a-reason way, or even an I-should-be-grateful-to-him-for-absolutely-everything way. Regardless, the author integrates this seemlessly, and I can still appreciate the sentiments.

The story moves quickly, and it seems like there are new developments on every page. There were definitely some "OH NO" moments for me, and I found this book to be just as much of an emotional rollercoaster as the previous ones. Ms. Luellen sure knows how to tug on those heartstrings!

There were a few typos: period in the middle of the sentence, incorrect pronoun, missing punctuation; though the story was pretty much entirely understandable anyway. I would say this is a must read for those already following the story (how could you not?!), and I would recommend it to YA, scifi, and even some paranormal fans. Super excited for (and wary of) the next one!

I love Winter's Saga!!! I just finished Winter's Wrath and I haven't been able to do anything else since I started reading this series!! I can't put the books down because I have been immobilized by the depth of the characters and plot!! I feel as though the Winter family is my own because the author has done such a fantastic job making the characters real. The plot is full of action that keeps me on the edge of my seat. I feel like I am on a roller coaster ride and I cant wait for the next book!! Karen Luellen is an awesome writer and deserves recognition for this series. I found these books on amazon and wanted to download them as soon as I read the synopsis, but I had a nook. Believe it or not - but I bought a kindle fire because I wanted to read this series. I don't regret it because the series is worth it. Winter's Saga is at the top of my favorites!! ( I rarely write reviews on books but I highly recommend this series.)

Once again Karen Luellen has penned a superb novel. With Winter’s Wrath she has solidified her reputation as master of suspense and action. This is made all the more impressive by her development of believable characters that draw the reader in. Her people are so real, readers feel a part of the Winter’s clan. This novel starts with more action than most books end with as the Winter’s clan fights to escape a death trap at the island home of a friend. From there, action builds as family and friends struggle to understand and control their developing powers. All of this, while a megalomaniac madman with limitless resources, driven by hate and cruelty, is determined to ruin their happy existence. It was with true regret that I turned the last page of this novel. Fortunately it is ripe for a sequel that I hope we will see in the near future.

Could not take it any longer. I rarely quit reading a book. I will power through most anything. I just couldn't with this. It made me want to go do anything but read. When I found myself rereading the same sentence for 45 minutes that was enough. Concept, its alright. The main characters are put on a pedestal that they don't deserve. They're billed as this family that's all goodness and light, but there is nothing backing that up. Oh and so you 'reformed' a killer? um no, taking away what makes somebody a killer doesn't allow them to be the good they were always meant to be. Which he kinda proves by continuing to kill people, though now for a 'good cause'.

This was an okay read. The story was dull at parts and confusing in others. The book was slow-paced, but it got better near the end. However, the characters are alright in this book than in the previous two books. They still got on my nerves at some points, but they were pretty interesting as well. Also, I do not like the fact the author expects to relate to the new characters so quickly. I want to see where the series goes from here, so I will continue it. I am, however, glad I made it through this book. Overall, a decent read.

With Amazon Prime I borrowed the first book since it had great reviews and I have read three of them in about two weeks! They are page turners and are hard for me to put down (just with real life I usually have to!) I wasn't sure what this book would bring but the adventure continues and Karen writes well and keeps you wanting more! The only thing that I didn't like was that it was a cliff hanger and ended mid-battle! UGH!

This is the third in the Winter’s Saga series and both my son and I are reading it. It’s a series with so many elements that it’s keeping both of entertained and coming back for more. The problem… my son makes me wait until he’s done with one before I read it (so I don’t finish it before him) so I haven’t been able start #4 yet! He’s reading quickly though, so I highly recommend this series as I’m for anything that keeps him reading and loving it!

I read and enjoyed the first two books in this series when they came out. Bought books 3 & 4 when they came out but set them aside and eventually forgot them.
Cleaning up kindle and found them. :-)
Still a good story even if I am finishing the series long after completion.
Young Adult but good for anyone that likes science experiments that go too far.

This was another okay story, although once again it seemed to drag a bit. I do think it was an improvement on the previous book though. Meg seemed to have developed quite a lot of new powers in this one, and found lots of ways to put them to use too!
