This is a continuation of another book that I have not read. So the "theory" behind it is omitted and this little snip-it is strictly practical application. The premise is that leaders evolve out of job challenges. These challenges include: unfamiliar responsibilities; new directions; inherited problems; problems with employees; high stakes; scope and scale; external pressure; influence without authority; work across cultures; work group diversity. The author's point is there are ways to get these experiences without changing jobs or companies. They've also identified competencies leaders should have and offer practical examples of ways to build these competencies (there are twenty).

For my personal reference: the job challenge I need more practice at (haven't learned all my lessons yet) is problems with employees. And I actually need more practice giving and receiving feedback. The competencies I want to focus on currently: managing effective teams; communicating effectively; solving problems and making decisions. Tune in later.
