Overall, I think that this book is an excellent resource for someone who is completely new to the idea of living a healthy life style. It is full of all of the motivating and positive elements that make healthytippingpoint.com and operationbeautiful.com such empowering sites to visit. It tackles disordered eating and all of the emotional struggles that a person deals with when facing a body they aren't happy with. There are workout plans and suggestions for new and exciting ways to exercise. There's a lot of good stuff here.
I think where I did get put off was the nutrition section. There is quite a bit of solid information in the book, but I felt it was too heavily slanted towards vegetarianism. It's understandable, given that it is the author's chosen lifestyle, however I am a happy meat eater, and I am not of the mindset that it is bad for you. I do 100% agree that the American meat industry is a disgrace, that CSA's and farmer's markets are wonderful and that plants are good things...and I can tell that Caitlin tried really hard to be inclusive and not make this about giving up meat, but it just really fell short. Why not spend more than a paragraph discussing quality meat (there was a good 1-2 pages on how awful the industry is) or work with a dietician who could come up with 1 or 2 meat recipes to go along with the vegetarian ones if you truly are promoting a eating style that accepts eating meat?
That all being said, some of the veggie recipes are quite tasty. I just wish I hadn't felt like I was getting beat over the head with a block of tofu.
I would absolutely recommend this book to someone looking to make positive changes to their life, though I would probably just preface it with some more information about quality meat products and warn them that the nutrition section is vegetarian slanted.
I bought this book because I read Caitin's blog (Healthy Tipping Point) and enjoy it so was interested in what a book of the same name would be like. This book has three parts, a part about achieving a healthy mentality, a part about healthy eating, and a part about exercise. All parts tie together to form a healthy and attainable lifestyle that anyone could live by.
I already lead a fairly healthy life so a lot of the information in this book was not new to me, especially in the second and third parts (healthy eating and exercise). It was the first part, talking about body image, perceptions of beauty and having a healthy mindset to have a healthy body, that resonated most with me. I found it very interesting and there are a few changes I can make in this regard.
All in all a good read. Probably best for people who want to overhaul their lifestyle or want to lose weight healthily, but the healthy body image parts are good reading for everyone.
I was a bit disappointed by this book because it felt like information I could find/have found myself online. I really like reading her blog but didn't feel like her voice came through as well in the book. I also read a lot on the topic of health/nutrition and am an avid exerciser so none of the information was new or insightful. Even though this book didn't appeal to me, I will probably pass it along to someone that is new to exercising and doesn't have a clue about how to eat a plant-based diet. It has some good tips for beginners.
I love the Healthy Tipping Point website, so I knew this book would resonate with me. I was familiar with a lot of the health info from Caitlin's blog, but it's great to have it all together in one handy resource - especially her recipes and training plans. She's also added inspiring personal stories from others who have found their healthy tipping point, which I found quite powerful. I'll definitely be using this book a lot in the future as I continue the running adventure she inspired me to embark on.
This book has some great information for someone who is just beginning their health and fitness journey. However, for me, I have already read or learned most of the information in past years. That being said, if you are looking for a book with a ton of good nutrition and fitness information for beginnings, this is a great book for you. And even for the more experienced fitness buff, there is definitely new information to be learned in this book. I'm going to keep it as a reference for easy to forget information like how much flax seed should I consume a day. Also, great recipes!
I love Caitlyn and all the practical information that this book contains. She really gets that it's the mind AND body that work together for health. The food section was really informative and encouraging of readers to fill up on delicious whole foods instead of trying to restrict ourselves! The book is a handy resource that I can always flip through for recipes, exercise ideas, and positive affirmations!
I REALLY enjoyed this book! I too follow Caitlin's blog so was excited to get the book in my hands. Her approach to healthy living really struck a chord with me and since I've been applying her suggestions and tips into my daily living I've already lost 6 pounds. I definitely recommend this book to people that struggle with maintaining a realistic approach to a healthy lifestyle :)
I read the blog by the same name and loved the book. I think the first third of the book is the most unique as it involves the mental/emotional aspects of health. Loved the recipes - they are simple and I would actually try them.
There were a few chapters in this book that were really, really, really good. Others were too repetitive of basic knowledge of nutrition and exercise. Ultimately, a healthy life: Nutrition, Fitness, Heart Happiness. I struggle with the 3rd, and this book deals with that really well.
