This series is absolutely wonderful and this is the best book yet!

Dae, mayor of Duck, SC, has a gift and is known as a "finder" to the local people. But in this book her gift seems to be extending. She "sees" a murder and the victim says to her, "Help her." Eventually Dae starts to see a missing little girl locked somewhere in a dark cold area but her gift only allows her to see the little girl, but not figure out where she is. Complications occur when her beau Kevin's old fiancee, Ann, appears. Ann had been in rehab since a nervous breakdown and Kevin honorably is standing by his old relationship with her (I found this dumb). Ann is cynical, jaded, and mean but she is a gifted psychic. Dae tries to work with her for the rescue of the little girl but it's difficult. The book ends on a cliff-hanger that demands reading the next book. Luckily I came upon this series several years after it was published. The next book is on its way to me in the mail!

And best of all, this book is signed by the authors.

In this book, Dae O'Donnell, mayor of Duck, North Carolina get involved in a murder investigation and the kidnapping of the victim's daughter. Dae's power or gift of seeing where things come from is changing and expanding so she can see the little girl and know she is still alive even though the FBI isn't so sure. To further complicate matters, the former girlfriend of Kevin who is now dating Dae comes to Duck to reclaim her life. The book was a quick easy read.

I had to go right from reading A Spirited Gift to reading A Haunting Dream. The cliffhanger at the end of A Spirited Gift makes it mandatory that you have A Haunting Dream on hand to read immediately. Then Dream has a cliffhanger at the end and the next book, A Finder's Fee doesn't come out until Oct 1, 2013. I hate that!!! Six months--that's torture.

This is by far the most intense book of this series. Dae's gift is again changing and then you have another person (critical character) thrown in that has a more powerful gift than Dae's. WOW!!!

This series is so much better than I ever thought it would be, and I liked it from the start. All I can say is keep them coming Joyce & Jim.

Missing Child

This series keeps getting better in this series we find a gold medallion, a missing child, murder of her father, Dae has an additional ability as she can read someone's mind. Dae is giving Kevin space so he can reconnected with his ex-fiancee, Ann. She is an physic expert on finding missing children. Ann is sure the child is dead but Dae can see her in a prison. The room is dark and wet. The FBI dismissed Dae and will only work with Ann. Will Dae and Ann work together to find the child?

I really LOVE this series and I hope there will be many more books in it. The authors are great at transporting the reader to a small island in NC, and the Outer Banks' wild horses even come into the story this time. I love that Dae's relationship has been shaken up a bit and I look forward to seeing where things go from here. This book was suspenseful, exciting and fun and I can't wait for more!

"A Haunting Dream" by Joyce and Jim Lavene was the first book in their Missing Pieces mystery series that I've read but it won't be the last. The story takes place in Duck, North Carolina, a small town on the Outer Banks, a setting rich in flavor and history. The main character, Mayor Dae O'Donnell, has an amazing gift, the ability to find missing items. But, when a little girl goes missing, her gift is tested. Will she be able to find the child in time to save her life?

Mayor Dae O'Donell and her evolving gift of finding lost things moves into a new era of her life as she becomes involved in the search for a missing child. It consumes her as she keeps seeing the girl being held in a dark place but can't figure out where it is. Add to that the complication of her boyfriend's psychic ex-fiance turning up unexpectedly, claiming her boyfriend, then helping the FBI with the search. It's all confusing, especially when murders happen in town & a notorious smuggler wants her help.

What an exciting adventure in the life of Dae O'Donnell! If you think things in Duck, NC would be dull in the winter months, think again! You never know what treasures or murderers will wash up on the shores of the Outer Banks. Ironically, I stumbled on to this series when finding the first two books in a thrift store. A Haunting Dream is filled with all the emotions and an ending that is sending me out to buy the next one, or two...

#4 in the series. I've been enjoying this series. However, this one wasn't my favorite. There were many elements of this story that just did not really make sense - but I don't want to give details as they might be spoilers. And I really The entire situation with Ann, the ex-fiance, was just uncomfortable (and she was not a likeable character for me, either). So I will look forward to the next book in the series and see what happens next in Duck.

I have been enjoying this series but I didn't like the addition of the character of Ann. She's cold hearted and unlikable. The book cover is spooky looking, the doll looks like it's possessed and whoever drew it couldn't draw cats at all. They made poor Treasure look hideous. Still, mostly enjoyed the book.

Dae. The Mayor of Duck, N.C learns info when she touches an object belonging to someone. This is helpful as she tries to find a kidnapped six year old girl. It’s quite an adventure for her. Enjoy her story.

I've always thought that Dae O'Donnell has one of the best paranormal gifts in all of cozy mysteries. I wouldn't mind having it myself. The next time my husband misplaces something... snap! I find it without having to retrace his steps for him. I also think it would be wonderful to pick up an old item and be able to tell its history. However, in this fourth book in the Missing Pieces series, authors Joyce and Jim Lavene ratchet things up a notch or two by increasing Dae's small gift into something much larger and filled with a sense of foreboding.

The only thing that didn't delight me about this book was the fact that I deduced the whodunit angle too quickly, but that was a very minor annoyance because I enjoy so many other things about this series. Dae O'Donnell is the mayor of Duck, North Carolina (a real town on the Outer Banks). Through her, the authors show what is involved in trying to keep a small town running smoothly-- especially one that has 500 year round residents and 25,000 summer ones. We get to learn about Duck's weather, preparing for hurricanes, and about Duck's sometimes piratical history. Dae's also running for re-election, so readers experience small town politics in action. All this makes Duck a vital piece of what makes this series work so well.

Dae is a very special main character, too. She's bright and funny, and a genuinely caring person. It's painful but enlightening to watch her deal with the arrival of Kevin's ex-fiancée. She's someone you'd want as a friend, and definitely someone you would want on your side in a fight. But that ex-fiancée's arrival is only the first of a one-two punch. To have her safe little "gift" change to such an alarming degree lets us see her even more off balance and fighting to understand what's happening to her. Dae is evolving as a person just as her gift is evolving, and these changes create a nice little cliffhanger that leads right to the next book in the series, A Finder's Fee, which will be released in October. The ending really has me anticipating this next book, and in a way I'm glad I didn't read this book as soon as it was out on the shelves. Now I don't have to wait so long for the next!

A Haunting Dream is the fourth book in the A Missing Pieces Mystery series. Another wonderful addition I might add.

Life for Dae O'Donnell has been turned upside down with the appearance of Ann Porter in Duck, NC. Ann is Kevin's former FBI partner and had been his fiancee'. Dae is understanding wants to give Kevin time to decide which way he wants to go.

This came at the time when Dae's neighbor Mac Sweeney asks for her help in finding a gold medallion that he found in a parking lot and that he can't now find. He needs to find it, as there is a reward being offered. When Dae gets a vision where the medallion is, she knows the medallion, as she once found it and returned it to it's owner, Chuck Sparks. A man name Derek is claiming it is his, but when Dae holds the medallion, she gets a vision of Sparks being killed and in the vision Sparks says: save her. Soon, Dae finds Sparks body in ditch. Then in a dream Dae is sure that Sparks' "help her" request is for his daughter that has gone missing.

The FBI has entered the picture and with Ann being there and having experience locating lost children with her psychic abilities, is asked to help. But she has a feeling the little girl is dead, but Dae doesn't. Dae has a couple customers come to her store, Missing Pieces, and she suspects that they might somehow be involved in the shooting and disappearance of the little girl.

In addition to another murder in her little community, Dae also has to contend with Randal "Mad Dog" Wilson who is running for mayor against Dae.

Looking forward to the next book to see if Kevin has reached a decision and to see how the election for mayor turns out.

Thanks to the upcoming election, incumbent Mayor Dae O'Donnell has quite a bit of stress already, as the challenger Mad Dog has been working overtime imputing bad motives and bad performance any way he can dream up. If she could concentrate on her campaign, she could deal with it well enough.

Unfortunately, she has romance troubles, as Kevin's even more psychic ex-fiancee Ann returns to claim him. This is the same day she recognizes Chuck's lost medallion in the hands of a neighbor. When she touches it, she learns that Chuck has died violently in the recent past. Chuck takes to haunting her with one request "help her." It turns out his daughter Betsy has been kidnapped. Dae can sense Betsy and has dreams & visions of her but they are not enough to find the little girl. This sort of investigation has been Ann's specialty, but Ann has a lot of issues of her own. Can the two ladies stand to work together? Will they find Betsy in time? Why was Chuck killed?

The feel of this mystery was very serious. I kinda missed the silliness in the last one, but I am not griping as it was a great mystery. Dae doesn't have Kevin as a partner this time, though he does help when he can. Mad Dog is using the rumor mill and media effectively. If Dae's friends and family weren't fighting back, she'd have been toast, as distracted as she was by her efforts to solve this convoluted case, Betsy's psychic cries for help, Chuck's scary pleas, and Ann's effect on her life - both emotionally and psychically. Its going to be interesting to see where Dae's life goes on from here.

I only rated this as a 4 * read because the way the book ends (which if GREAT) the authors are forcing you to buy the next book and that just goes against all my principals! This series is absolutely astounding though! The City of Duck as the most eccentric, unusual characters I’ve ever run in to and they all just highlight the story even more. The book caught my attention from page one and held it until the last page and then I was sorry it ended. I especially enjoyed how more of Kevin’s past life popped up and enhanced the story even more. Well plotted, well written a good read for anyone enjoying mysteries!

The Haunting Dream by Joy and Jim Lavene is in their Missing Pieces mystery series. I have read some of the others and I enjoyed this as much as the others. Dae is the Mayor of Duck, North Carolina and the owner of Missing Pieces shop that sells antiques and oddities and tourist items. She has a relationship with Kevin, a former FBI agent who is the owner of the Blue Whale, an inn. When Kevin's former fiancé, Ann shows up, it looks like that relationship will be ending. Ann, also a former FBI agent is a physic and helped find missing persons during her career. Finding one too many children dead caused her to have a mental breakdown. She is trying to pick up the pieces of her life and one of those pieces is Kevin. Dae also has physic abilities, being able to find lost things, usually objects. In this case, it happens to be a missing child whose father was murdered.
Not only trying to campaign for the upcoming election against a stupid, boorish man, she is beset with visions of the dead man asking her to "help Her". She is forced to form a pact with Ann to use both their abilities in the quest to find the child while still alive. The story is fast paced and you will enjoy reading it and the outcome was very nicely handled.

Well, things are heating up in Duck, NC. They survived the hurricane and the coffee shop stayed open. At the grand reopening Kevin's ex partner shows up after being institutionalised for several years. No time has passed for her and she assumes she is still Kevin's fiancé . When a neighbour asks Dae to find a medallion he found and then lost she sees the owner being murdered and the guy who comes to claim the medallion is the same person Dae saw in her vision. The murdered man has a message for Dae though: "please help her". When Dae goes to the cops with her vision and suspicion that there is missing child along with the murdered man they don't believe her, at least until she stumbles over the murdered mans body. What with the FBI, Kevin's fiancé and assorted criminals hanging around and the missing child no one believes in Dae's campaign kick off against Mad Dag isn't going well. An excellent read.

Really good story about not only a murder that Dae sees when she touches an object, but also a missing girl. The release of her boyfriends ex-fiance from a psychiatric facility adds a dimension of awkwardness, but also another psychic from which Dae can learn a bit more about her gifts and their evolution.

I'm not sure if they murderer is supposed to be a giant surprise or not - it wasn't obvious to me, but the reveal didn't surprise me either. This book had quite a bit of action for a cozy and the pace felt quick. Dae's family dynamics are complicated and I think the author is trying to paint her grandfather as crusty, but loveable - all I get is a cantankerous, judgemental old man.

I solid series and I'm looking forward to seeing where the next book goes...

I could hardly wait for this new book in this series to come out. Downloaded it the day it was available. This book picks up exactly at the same spot the previous book left off. Mayor Dae is up for reelection, her boyfriend Kevin's former fiancé has arrived in town and definitely wants him back. Course there a few murders to solve, a couple ghosts who are pleading with her to help, and a kidnapped child that Dae is trying to locate before its too late. Dae, herself, even gets kidnapped.
I not want to give away too much but this a wonderful book. I'd give it more stars if I could, it's that good. But you definitely have to read the previous books in this series to follow what's happening. Can't wait for the next one!

In Lavene’s paranormal mystery novel, Dae O’Donnell’s boyfriend Kevin’s ex-fiancée, Ann, arrives unexpectantly in Duck seeking an opportunity to rekindle their romance. With her love life dangling by a thread, Dae suffers another shock when her “gift” changes allowing her to “see” his murder and “hear” his cry for help. Another vision points to the victim’s daughter being kidnapped and the FBI steps in take over the case. But Dae refuses to ignore her visions and is even willing to work with Ann, a strong psychic herself, to bring this lost child home.

Another fabulous addition to the A Missing Pieces Mystery series that grabbed my attention at page one. A fast-paced paranormal mystery full of amazing characters.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

This the first book in this series that I have read. This is another cozy mystery novel.

The main character, Dae, is the first mayor of Duck, NC. She has psychic powers in which she can locate missing items. But apparently in this book her powers expands. She has a boyfriend, who has an ex-fiancee. The woman shows up in town—AND she’s has psychic powers also. Then a missing girl is found and she is to have some psychic powers also.
The story line was good-murder, kidnapping, etc. For me though, there was just too much story line going to three different people in one small town having psychic powers.

I will read another book in the series.

This series is really starting to take hold for me. I like all of the central characters and the writing and dialogue are very tight and realistic. The only downside to this book was a lot of new characters(most of which were gone by the end of the book, and having Dae gain even more powers with her visions. It just seemed as if the authors threw a lot at the readers in this one, especially with the introduction of Ann, Kevin's ex-girlfriend. But, with the cliffhanger at the end of the book, it makes me want to read the next one.

Today’s book, A Haunting Dream: A Missing Pieces Mystery by Joyce and Jim Lavene, is a murder mystery with a paranormal streak. The novel’s heroine is Dae O’Donnell, the mayor of small-town Duck, North Carolina and the owner of Missing Pieces, a local thrift store. Oh, she’s also psychic. Labeled the “finder of missing pieces” by the people of Duck, Dae is able to find where lost items are simply by holding the hand of the person who lost it.

While I enjoyed the mystery part of the story and the hunt for the kidnapped child, I didn't like how Kevin dropped Dae immediately on Ann's arrival. He should have explained that their relationship was over--had been over for months and he'd moved on with his life. This whole "I have to give it a chance" seemed a contrived plot line to me and only a way to get another psychic into the town. I didn't like this part of the book at all, as it messed up Kevin's relationships not only with Dae but just about everyone else as well. If I hadn't liked the rest, I would have given it a lower rating.
