AJ Jarrett is happily married to her best friend and the mother of four, yes, four children. Born and raised in Missouri and loves the area most of the time, until it snows a ton. She enjoys reading and reads a lot. When not reading she can be found propped up in her favorite spot on the couch with her laptop plotting her next story or finishing one of her WIP.

The dialogue is clumsy as hell and in no way matches who these people are supposed to be. The paranormal division, at any rate. I am getting bad Joyee Flynn flashbacks here, but also Lynn Hagen ones and even J R Ward.
Yes, Miles is too stupid to live, but there are redeeming factors. Such as this thought of his: “His father was right. He was an idiot.” That’s nicely disarming.
Indeed, there are lots of mitigating factors when it comes to Miles. I do commend him on . A rare moment of wisdom. It does not last very long, but still.
As for Ben, I appreciate that, unlike so many others in those kinds of books, he at least took the time to research his mate before approaching him. There’s a sense of respecting boundaries as well.
With that said, the writing is really quite bad. Not entirely incomprehensible, but sometimes things get a little confusing when they are reiterated and rephrased, adding a snippet of information here and there. And at times sentences say the opposite of what the author clearly meant to express.
Since this book takes the time to actually explain the importance of semen in the mating, I need to get something off my chest that’s been bugging me through a truckload of paranormal romances. Essentially, this means two women can’t mate, ever. Penetration and semen (usually also blood) seem to always be the requisite. Kinda unfair when you have so many male/male couples, isn’t it?
Also, claiming that “semen is the root of love for both men and women” makes me stare. It’s a blank stare. A really long one. I guess this goes to show that sometimes women (such as this author) can be the ones to propagate the most awfully chauvinistic views, whether that’s by accident or not.
I should have expected this next bit, but I suppose I was distracted by… everything else. Once the first confrontation with the Big, Bad Evil Dude occurs, it’s so over the top black and white. He’s pure evil and he even says how much fun it is to be evil. They just never shut up about that. As though “good” and “evil” were things you ticked off on a multiple choice test and then that’s all there is to it.
All that trust in fate, too.
*sigh* I can handle silly concepts, but if you feel your story needs to be fate-based, please try to make it at least logical within its rule set.
And quite honestly, I don’t get why having been turned into vampires way back is such a tragic thing. They don’t age, have lots of extra powers, get presented with perfect soul mates. It’s not even that they can’t walk in the sun or any of that. The only downside would be that they have to drink blood. Hell, they can even still enjoy food! Seems like a pretty much complete win to me, so why the pity party? Because you have Evil adversaries? Hate to break it to ya, but everyone does to an extent.
Got to say? Even thought I saw it coming with great blazing lights (not exactly subtle, this book) it still was a bit of a shock that Miles, uh… Pity that around the same time the writing gained another few layers of confusing. Everything was repeated ad nauseam, every realization was had over and over all new, it seemed. Yeah, those paragraphs sucked.
Miles, sweetie, while I appreciate that you’re not given to fits of hysteria and tend to not go into sulks over every little thing (like so many of the small-sized bottom-boy mates you are so clearly based on), this really was your fault. All of it. That’s on you. After you were warned. Twice. Specifically.
What I do like is that he doesn’t hold it against Astrid. In general, everyone (of the “good” guys, anyway) does their level best to treat others fairly and with consideration. It’s sad how rare this is in books of this type. On the other hand, maybe it makes everyone just a bit too perfect. Well, we still have the stupidity to fall back on for character flaws. Somehow I find well-meaning stupidity less annoying than the whiny, arrogant kind.
By the end I was getting whiplash from everyone finding their mates. This is only the first volume. Shouldn’t this be spaced out more? What gives?
Anyway. This wasn’t an awful book. The following stood out to me:
The giggling. The hyperbole. The naïvety. The repetitiveness.
Stark good vs. stark evil. Death, suicide, rape. Insta-love, insta-lust.
Respectful behaviour. Good intentions. Optimism. Flowery prose.
I have to admit that for a badly written, utterly formulaic book in the vein of a very particular sub-subgenre, it definitely had its moments. In the end those made up for a lot.
I've actually bought the first four books of this series in a bundle, and after reading the first book, I decided to review it on it's own. Wow, I was totally swept away by the story line, along with the compelling characters, and the incredible paranormal world building. The author does an excellent job of describing the emotions of every character. Their stories were heartwarming as well as tragically heart wrenching, humorous as well as passionate, action filled with nail biting danger. I loved how they communicated their true feelings for each other, whether it was with sarcastic banter, or with a feeling of loyalty, love, and family. The innocence of some of the characters was significantly well portrayed, and I just fell in love with Miles (human) , Trevor (also human), and Ben (vampire). I will always love that paranormal mating pull, and in these stories there's more than one couple coming together, which kept me enthralled from the first page to the last. Yes, this book was awesome, and now I'm on to the next book in this series. :)
Reading this AFTER reading book 3 in the series makes it a bit of a jumble for me. Reading what actually happened first from Miles book makes the timeline seem skewed a little to me (Logan stating that he bit his mate at the end of this book.. I don't remember that it happened that way.. hmm re-read coming up!). Normally if I'm giving a series a shot I try my best to start from the beginning to make sure it feels like its flowing correctly (which didn't happen in this case)
Despite this, I did enjoy the book. It gives a good enlightenment on how the Warriors got started on both sides. I think my biggest objection was why would Miles be a mate to both Malcolm or Ben? To me that speaks to Miles' character! A Mate should compliment/match each other and these two possible mates are polar opposites literally good vs evil! But in this case, Miles actually abhors Malcolm.. even more after being tricked into mating with him. So again... what was the point?
Era realmente necesaria esa escena???? Encontré que estuvo totalmente fuera de lugar y me puso demasiado incómoda. I mean, por qué.

This was a good start to the series. It was informative without being overly dragged down with information. I knew the basic setup of the world the author has created and the powers within a short amount of time. So Miles is your normal everyday college student walking late at night. Right from the start I knew I liked him. He was funny even in his inner thoughts. He got better as he dealt with the paranormal world being thrown at him. Ben is a leader of a group of warriors that fight against the evil paranormals. He is there hunting down one such evil dude, Malcolm, when he learns that Miles is his mate. Miles is also Malcolm's mate. I have to say I do have a soft spot for instant love and mating deals. And this is no different. It doesn't hurt that the writing was good and fast paced. Plus the sex was reasonably hot. I didn't like the forced sex that happened, but luckily the author was able to save it in the end. I enjoyed this book. The main characters were easily likable as well as many of the secondary characters. The theme, while maybe not completely unique, it was very interesting and entertaining. I look forward to reading more about the fight of good over evil and the world created. * I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through http://mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com *
AJ Jarrett’s MILES’S AWAKENING is a fast paced look at vampires as both good guys and bad guys. In Ms Jarrett’s vampire canon vampires were created during the Dark Ages by a witch with a twisted sense of humor to cause bickering villages to be forced to fight with each other for eternity. One village became the Warriors of the Dark and the other Warriors of the Light.
I think that subsequent episodes of this unique series will help strengthen the link between reader and characters as we learn more about all of them. We are left with some intriguing questions about some of the vampires on both sides of the war, setting up the stories for future books. It will be an interesting series to follow and I’m looking forward to the next book. I recommend MILES’S AWAKENING for anyone who enjoys getting in on the ground floor of a promising new paranormal series.

I didn't like the way how an old vampire speaking with each other. They sounds like teenager speaking and the main protagonist ,Ben is suppose to have originated from an old royal leanage. The concept of the story is good but everything is too fast that it lacks emotions. Even the erotic side of the story which I was really looking forward didnt deliver.
