I am old and very jaded and it usually takes something with batteries to make me squeal like a preteen at a Justin Bieber concert. But when it comes to my favorite holiday, all it takes is some glittery party hats and a few grinning pumpkins to make me pitch a major squealie.
Glitterville - http://www.glitterville.com/ - has been selling wonderful decorations for years now. I'm too much of a cheapskate to spring for one of their "Mr. Bones chip & dip servers" or an "Itchy Witchy stacking cake platter", so I'm thrilled to be able to make my own goodies based on their designs.
Most of the projects in this book are made from easily obtainable supplies - no plastic novelty eyeballs, thank you! Styrofoam balls, Paperclay, crepe paper and chenille stems are all that's needed to create a cute, rather than creepy Halloween. (Chenille stems? I didn't know anybody used them anymore. I LOVE IT!)
I'm looking forward to many happy hours crafting witch hats, spider puppets, pumpkin tiaras, and surprised jack-o-lanterns. And did I mention the trick-or-treating cupcake, 'cos I should have. She's really cool!
Christmas is my favorite holiday (closely followed by Halloween at second) and I love crafts and making my own decorations. The cover of this book is awesome and the book is full of a lot of great project ideas.
Each project includes step-by-step instructions with beautiful color photos to help guide you through. There's even a cake recipe towards the back that looks delicious.
These are not projects for children to make, but I'm sure they can help you. Each one is very detailed and has a lot of parts to it, but the finished products are gorgeous.
Note: I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. No other consideration was offered, expected or received.
When I saw this book, I thought it would be a fun way for my girlfriend and I to do something Christmassy and fun together. This book is filled with adorable projects that I would love to have in my home. Sadly though, I think I'll leave it to her to make the designs from this book. I don't think I have the chops.
This book contains twenty crafts for the winter season that I absolutely love. There is so much glitter, y'all, and I love it. The instructions are step by step, and fully illustrated so that you can follow along with the pictures to ensure that your crafts are coming along nicely. There are also a lot of techniques used in this book. The author provides steps for these too, but as an un-crafty person, some of them, like using a sewing machine, just aren't in the cards. These designs are too cute but there are things like sculpting faces or painting them that, again as a non-crafty person, I don't think mine would come out quite the same as the author intended.
That all being said, my girlfriend is the artistic one between us and she didn't have a problem with any of the skills or techniques that the book called for.
The designs that I thought were the cutest (though it is super hard to pick) are the Glitzen the Reindeer Candy Box, Nutty as a Fruitcake Party Hat & Frosty Folly on a Swing.
This book gets four stars from me because the designs are glittery and adorable and fantastic, the steps are clear and fully illustrated, and the techniques are well explained, but it also comes with a warning: If you are non-artistic or new to crafting, proceed with caution. This seems more like an intermediate level book.
Thanks to Netgalley & Andrews McMeel Publishing for my copy in exchange for my honest review. This review can also be found on my blog, Bitches n Prose.
I don't know who or what Glitterville is, but I loved the kitsch characters and whimsical style of these projects. They really are a bit different to most of the Christmas craft books you see and would need a bit of time and planning. Unfortunately, most of the projects seem to use polystyrene , which I CAN'T STAND ...but never mind, just looking at these enchanting makes is enough for me.
Thank you to netgalley.com for my free e-ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for my honest review. I was not otherwise compensated. Content: Glitterville’s Handmade Christmas by Stephen Brown is a glitter-filled fantasy of a holiday craft book. Along with a comprehensive list of supplies and techniques, there are twenty Christmas craft projects featured in the book. They include: Pinecone Gnome, Tiny Tannenbaums and Present Picks, Glitter Village, Sparkle Forest, Ho-Ho Snow, Frosty Folly on a Swing, Glitzen the Reindeer Candy Box, Ginger Cookie Kids, Confectionery Cone of Candy, Nutty as a Fruitcake Party Hat, Glitter Pixies, Jolly Dolly Holly Wreath, Glittered Baubles, Candy Claus, Christmas in Cupcake Town, Coconut Flake Cake, Pink Chenille Pine with Sappy Sweet Ornaments, Nutcracker Sweet Candy Bucket, Wally the Christmas Log, and Wacky Woods Felt Ornaments. All of the projects use simple supplies and are described in detail with accompanying photos. The good: There is a wide range of holiday craft ideas that are fun and modern, yet easily adaptable to other styles/paint colors, if you wish to do so. Step-by-step instructions are complete, concise, and easy to follow; accompanying photos are excellent. The not-so-good: I reviewed an electronic version and there were some significant formatting issues in it. Font styles and sizes varied widely within the same paragraph, photographs appeared out of order, and some steps were also out of order. That may have been an issue with the download to my kindle; even so, I definitely recommend the print version of this title. The other negative for me was the poems and rhymes that accompany each craft project. They came across as forced and pretty cheesy; I wish the space used for these would have been used to include more craft ideas, because I really didn’t feel they added anything to the book. Impression: I really liked this book a lot. As a lifetime crafter and artist, I appreciated that it had some original ideas, clear instructions, was well-photographed, and didn’t have a supplies list a mile long. Most craft books are a miss for me, as I am extremely picky with which titles I choose to add to my home library; however, I purchased a hard copy of this book (my recommended format if you’re going to buy) and will probably also purchase more to give as gifts. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars.
This book is filled with photographs and directions to help make each person's Christmas unique. It helped to make me excited about the crafts that I can either do this year or next year. The projects also included poems to go with the crafts. To begin, the book lets the reader know what kind of tools and materials are needed to complete the projects, then there are many tips and techniques to aid in success. There are forests, snowflakes, glitter domes and so, so much more.
I was given this book by NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing in exchange for my honest review.
Spectacular projects with detailed step by step instructions. I'm afraid that I just don't have the patience required to successfully recreate such intricate works of art, however, it was fun looking through the book and seeing the creative process. Each project was introduced with a cute little poem that was the cherry on top. Too cute!
Every year my family and I make Christmas ornaments for our tree (it’s our holiday tradition), so I’m always on the lookout for craft ideas that will make pretty ornaments, but won’t break the bank and are simple enough that everyone can do them, even the kiddies. When I first saw this book I thought the crafts looked amazingly beautiful and fun (and so so sparkly – I’m a girl who love love loves her some sparkles), but they also looked complicated and expensive to make and I didn’t think it would be something for the whole family – I’m happy to say that I was wrong. Glitterville’s Handmade Christmas is full of wonderful ideas that are not only fun and sparkly, but also surprisingly easy and super affordable to make!
This how-to holiday craft guide provides easy to follow step-by-step written instructions accompanied by gorgeous, full-colored simple-to-follow illustrative pictures, making these wonderful crafts do-able for even the beginner crafter (some are a bit harder, but still very do-able, even for me and Christmas is pretty much the only time of the year when I feel crafty). The back of the book also has some very useful patterns to make things that much easier.
My family and I ended up making the Ginger Cookie Kids as ornaments and they came out looking fantastic. The adults and kids had a blast making them, they barely cost anything to make (all you need for that particular project is styrofoam, craft paint, glue, and some different colored felts) and they look so pretty on the tree. I absolutely recommend this craft guide to anyone, from beginner crafters to advanced, who wants to add a personal touch of sparkle and fun to their holiday season. I’m holding on to this book and will treasure it as a valuable holiday crafting resource for the years to come – I’m already eyeing the Pinecone Gnomes for next year.
*I received an ARC of this book to review. You can find this review and others like it at BookAndCoffeeAddict.com, along with recommendations for a fantastic cup of coffee.
I loved the setup and layout of this book. The instructions seemed detailed and easy to follow. I’m a visual learner, so I love pictures. The best craft books are the ones loaded with photos. Kudos to the photographer! Stephen Brown is really gifted and I enjoyed his book. However, I wasn’t inspired to make anything from it because I don’t really get excited about Halloween and, aside from carving a few pumpkins, we don’t decorate. I am looking forward to reading Glitterville's Handmade Christmas: A Glittered Guide for Whimsical Crafting!.
I got this book as a free eARC (Advanced Reader Copy) from netgalley.com. This does not affect my review or opinion of this book.
This book delivers what every craft book should do, inspiration! The projects are fun, do-able, and are easily tweaked to be used for other projects and occasions. The book is aesthetically pleasing too, projects are well demonstrated and the photography is gorgeous! I don't usually come across craft books that I actually enjoy flipping through without getting bored.
If you are a crafter, this book (and its projects) will make a great edition to your library.
This is a gorgeous book filled with so many ideas, inspirations and projects. Some are for the more experienced crafter, but there are quite a few projects for beginners. I recommend buying this book in hardcover, one because it is so beautiful, even flicking through the pages will get you into the Christmas spirit. Reason two, if found it a bit difficult to manage any project from a tablet.
Every project in this book is just beautiful and I will be looking out for more of “Glitterville’s” craft books.
Glitterville's Handmade Christmas is a creative start to your Christmas Season.
Some of the creations are just so cute. I love the way they tell you step by step how to create the craft, and then they show you pictures. It is just the type of book that I would want to have.
If you are into sewing and sculpting, and piecing then this book is for you. If you aren't into that yet, take a look inside, maybe you can find a craft you would like to do. I know that I found a couple.
I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.
This wonderful book of whimsical, handmade Christmas decorations is a hidden gem. With clear-cut, step-by-step, easy-to-understand instructions enhanced with beautiful pictures to clarify the different procedures is a treasure trove of creative ideas. All materials needed were pictured and explained.
While the instructions were easy to follow, some experience is needed, as well as a bit of artistic talent, and a steady hand. I would classify this book at an intermediate level. If you're like me and are unfamiliar with some of the techniques. Get extra supplies. Watch a Youtube video on how to work with polymer clay, and practice a bit before you try some of the more challenging decorations. A lot of the steps were new to me, but that just added a challenge to the experience. I spent a lot of fun, and rewarding hours making some of the items in this book.
I definitely recommend this book to creative individuals, who like to have fun making beautiful things.
I received this book from NetGalley which I voluntarily reviewed. The opinions stated are my own, honest, and unbiased.
This is a book definitely designed for people in mind who: 1) like to craft and 2) love to decorate specifically for Halloween. I do not consider myself a crafter and do not decorate specifically for Halloween as opposed to the fall, but I did find several items in this book that were cute. However, I do like the fact that there are templates in the back of the book so that enlargements can be made and the step-by-step directions included pictures (for even the challenged crafter like myself). I am going to make the nut cups to place candy corn and pumpkins and other small treats for when my grand-daughter returns from Trick or Treating. However, rather than going through the issue of making crepe paper insides as suggested in the book, I'm going to try the use of cupcake liners. Regardless, it is a book of smart crafts for this generation.
Wow! Very creative that was made to look easy with his step-by-step instructions. Unfortunately it was much more detailed work than I have time for, this year. I will definitely have to revisit this book when I have more time to collect the supplies. I may attempt Santa's Magic Snow experiment though.
Although I'm not that into the weird-whimsical style that is the author's vocabulary, the projects in this book are very well done and explained (although I doubt the average crafter will get these superior results...). Lots of beautifully styled photos of delicate-looking ornaments and decor. Great inspiration here. Poetry is meh. My curiosity for Paperclay is piqued!
Packed full of glitter and sparkle this book provides some wonderful ideas to help you create a handmade Christmas. Twenty craft projects are in this book, easy to follow photos show you what to do with step by step instruction. Make a snow globe, glittery village or holly wreath this Christmas.
I love Christmas crafts, but these projects look intentionally difficult to create. I kept thinking that there must be a better and easier way to do these crafts.
I got this book free as an advanced reader copy from netgalley.com. This does not change my opinion or review of this book. Now on to the review...
I thought this was an excellent craft book. It does what all good craft books do - makes you want to roll up your sleeves and get dirty! While the crafts are beautiful and look child friendly, I would not recommend this book to an absolute beginner or to someone who specifically wants to do crafts with children. That being said, a few of the projects featured would be perfect to do with kids, as long as there was a crafty knowledgeable adult helping. Both kids and adults alike will enjoy the brightly colored and sparkly projects in this book. There are also a few scrumptious looking recipes, including coconut cake. My favorite projects in Glitterville's Handmade Christmas are:
Christmas in Cupcake Town
This project would probably take a few hours and would require a little skill and patience to get the clay right, but it looks relatively simple and absolutely adorable!
and
Sparkle Forest
This project is very simple and uses mostly household and inexpensive items. I will definitely be making some of these for Christmas!
Overall I would give this book a 4 out of 5. The projects are all cute and get you into the holiday spirit!
I had so much fun reading this colorful book of handmade Christmas projects! The author is extremely talented in design, and his writing throughout the book was reader friendly. The instructions were clear and concise with stepped-out photos for each of the projects. The photography was excellent.
As an added bonus, I enjoyed his original multi-stanza rhyming poems printed with each project. His light-hearted rhymes are as whimsical as his projects.
My favorite pair of projects were his 'Ginger Cookie Kids'. I love gingerbread people decor, and these characters were delightful. The author uses lots of easy-to-source materials in his projects. Some of the projects involve crafting and painting and some involve sewing.
The author definitely steps outside the box when it comes to the colors used for his Christmas decor. Another favorite project of mine was a felt holly leaves with berries wreath. Instead of the traditional forest green and dark red color scheme, he made holly leaves using lime green and turquoise felt. The holly berries were hot pink pom poms instead of red. It's a real-catcher!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to craft, paint, or sew. I borrowed this book from our local public library.
I was gifted Glitterville's Handmade Christmas by Stephen brown in exchange for an honest review. I thought about reading the book, but resisted. I have so many craft books just waiting for me to make something out of them. Curiosity got me and I downloaded the book and began perusing through. . . OK, I knew it, I'm hooked. I've found many ideas I will be making. Stephen begins the book with a step-by-step manual for make and do, a guide to help before beginning any of the craft ideas. While a few of the ideas may be too advanced for younger children, many would be suitable for elementary age. I will be recommending this book for my family, friends, and colleagues. EASILY FIVE STARS!
Truly cute book! It contains 20 glittery projects aimed mainly for Christmas (or wintery themes), but you can use the ideas presented here to explore your creativity more (I can imagine some of the idea used for baby showers or children´s parties). Techniques are described in-detail and materials used are quite common (which is great). Also there is a lot of photographs showing the creative process step by step, which is very helpful. I wouldn´t recommend the book for total beginners in crafting, as you can get disappointed when your products come out in not so perfect shapes(but don´t get discouraged by this! No pain, no gain :)). But a bit trained/skilled craftmans probably will enjoy the shiny and sparkly creative process!
This book excels on a number of levels. It would be a beautiful holiday coffee table book, a thoughtful gift for a fellow crafter or a welcome how-to guide that's a welcome departure from the sea of basic crafting books. In "Glitterville's Handmade Christmas," Stephen Brown gives a throughout step-by-step guide on how to create several dozen quality (somewhat advanced) holiday crafts. The illustrations are as lovely to look at as the volume is to read. I'm new to the Glitterville books, but I'll be seeking out the rest of the series.
This popped up on Libby so I thought I’d read through it to get into the Halloween spirit. There are lots of very cute crafts, each introduced by a twee little poem. The projects have a lot of steps and parts for things that won’t last, like cupcake liners, but others are cute, like a pumpkin Bride of Frankenstein figure. In general, they all looked the same because of the same stripes and leering faces. It was definitely a fun book to flip through, but I wouldn’t make any of the crafts myself. But I would welcome one that someone made for me, hahaha.
I absolutely loved this book! I remember Stephen Brown from the craft challenge show he did with Tori Spelling a year or so back and knew his style.
The projects were a great blend of craftsmanship and whimsy...some were a little beyond my supplies and talents, but they showed me techniques that I could apply elsewhere.
The photography was spot on and really aided the instructions and I loved how full of personality the text was.
This is a super cute craft book that is worthy of purchase. I checked this out of the library electronically to my iPad and it's incredibly hard to read that way. Not only that, but you'll need to scan/copy pages in the back for patterns.
I look forward to making some of the fun projects for years to come.
