My Thoughts...
First...let me say the suspense genre is not a genre I read often. One reason being it does not seem believable to me. This book was so full of action to the point of being to much. The running and the danger was so constant, and may I say predictable, it just got to be a little too much for my taste.
The setting for the story was somewhere in the mountains between Montana and Oregon, where the bad guys are chasing Nathan and Marci around the mountain. After reading all the chasing around the mountain the song "They'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain When They Come" kept playing in my little gray mass of a brain. It was just so much going on and so predictable, I began to lose interest. But I struggled through to the very end... I awarded myself 5 golden stars for challenging myself to see if I could see it through to the end.
This book is a part of my Kindle library. However for the book itself I only awarded it 2 snow-covered frozen stars.
Despite the farfetched-ness of some of the situations that the characters find themselves in and now near their escape is, I'm glad that I decided to give Sharon Dunn a second chance and keep her books on my to-read list.
This romance-inspired suspense revolves about Merci, a college student who's on her way to visit an aunt for the holidays. She's riding with fellow student Lorelei, and together the two of them are about as innocent and as unprepared as typical students can be to...oh, get pulled over and robbed by thugs up in the middle of the mountains.
Uh-oh.
It's a good thing that Nathan, an EMT and mountaineering expert, is nearby to witness what happens. He totally saves their asses and then it's a fast-paced, chilly, chase going up and down the mountain, with the bad guys constantly on their heels and poor Nathan and Merci totally cold throughout most of it.
Brrrrrrr!
Let's just say that I was happy to be reading this book indoors, with a warm cup of tea, my heater going, and blankets wrapped around me for maximum warmth and comfort.
In terms of how the plot works, the descriptions of the cold and the forest are very vivid, and just because of the desperate and harsh setting, the situation itself feels more urgent and desperate. It's not just the bad guys that our heroes are fighting, after all, but the harsh elements of a mountain winter as well. It reminded me a bit of No Exit in terms of the setting, and so that's always a good thing. (Love that book, by the way, will def need to re-read it soon.)
Some stars taken off because the motivation of the villains wasn't exactly the best, and also the ending was really abrupt. I would've liked more cuddly, fluffy moments to make up for all the running-through-the-woods-in-winter moments. But, ah well! Good read overall to restore my faith in Sharon Dunn!
This was surprisingly good for a Harlequin Love Intrigue book. It was mostly a long series of adventures as the main characters tried to escape from an unknown foe. It reminded me a lot of the movie "Dune" where the main character is being chased by an 18-wheeler and doesn't know why. In this case, Merci is traveling home during break, catching a ride with an acquaintance from college. Not only do they get stuck in a snowbank during a storm, but then two guys come along to rob them. Things start to look up when a neighbor (cue the good-looking single guy) comes to their rescue. But when one of them is kidnapped and the other two head out in a storm to help, things get complicated and dangerous. The thieves keep following them and popping up in unexpected places. As soon as they think they're safe, here come the bad guys again. It almost got comical after a while. But I was also on the edge of my seat, hoping for them to get to safety...and also to find out what the thieves were looking for. This was definitely a romance, but a clean and wholesome one. There was some talk of God and prayer, but it wasn't an overwhelming part of the story. Very nice book, plenty of action scenes, and a quick and exciting read by a new-to-me author.
This is my first book by Sharon Dunn and I must say I was really impressed! This is also my second love Inspired Suspense and I have to say both were wonderful! I will definitely be on the lookout for more by this author and more Love Inspired Suspense.
In Zero Visibility Merci Carlson wants to go visit her aunt over her college spring break and decides to accept a ride with Lorelei, a girl she knew from a class she took. Merci thought she was nice to offer her a ride home. As they are on their way, they decide to take a short cut. On the mountain a bad winter storm has made the roads icy. The car goes off the road and they cannot start it. Two men come to help them. But Merci learns they are really robbing them. Nathan has come back to take care of some things after his parents' deaths. He is out on his snowmobile when he sees the girls in trouble. He rescues them and takes them back to his parents’ cabin. The robbers come back and take Lorelei hostage. Nathan and Merci decide to go after her. They go out the old camp that Nathan’s parents ran. They continue to fight the robbers and try to get off the mountain for help. There are lots of twists and turns in the book and a lot happens in a couple of days. Can you fall in love with someone that you have only known a couple of days? Can you fall in love with someone that you have gone though a frightening event with? Read to find out if Merci and Nathan can find love.
At first I thought the title had something to do with the weather, but after reading, I so learned that it had a deeper meaning. I think it meant more about how we see other people. Sometimes our impressions of someone are so different than who they are. I really think that you have to rely on the spirit to help you know how people really are. There were several instances in the book where characters got the feeling this person or that was so different than they thought. Sometimes the characters listened to the spirit but a lot of times they did not.
This is a fast paced story. A lot happens in a couple of days and you really get drawn into the story. I thought at times that the author made you feel like you were right there and you could really image where the characters were. The setting for the story was really interesting too.
I really think this book would have been a fun read on a snow day. It is interesting to me that it comes out in July when it is so hot. Really enjoyed this book!
This book was provided by Netgalley and Harlequin. I was given a galley of the book for review but was not required to give a positive review.
Review: Zero Visibility by Sharon Dunn 4 STARS I liked this fast paced book. I had many start and stop on this book because my town was evacuated for fire. I had to take my kindle. I liked the characters especially Nathan & Merci. Merci is putting herself through collage. She works for 1 year and than does a year of collage and than over again to work. Her parents are not going to be in the country for her break. She failed a class & her car broke down the week before school was out. She is looking for a ride to her Aunt's place and Lorelei offers her a ride to where she wants to go. Lorelei knows a shortcut through the backway but winter storm is here and she drives off the side of the road. When she goes to start the car it won't start. While they are seeing what they can do to get it unstuck a car with two guys come around. They put the girls in thier car which is on and heater is working. They open the car hood and trunk and Merci can't see what they are doing so she gets out. One of the guys is going through her bag. He sees her and pulls a gun on her. Then the other guy pulls a gun. Nathan was up to his family cabin saying goodby before he has to sell it and the ski resort and summer camp. Nathan is on snowmobile and sees the guys pull the gun on the girls. He races down and knocks one down and gets the girls to jump on behind them. He takes the girls to his cabin and calls to the sheriff that the girls were robbed by two gunman. After the girls are warm they try and make it down the mountain in his four wheeler and have to turn back. The phone does not work and roads are too snowy. Lorelei for some reason goes outside amd Nathan goes after her and gets knocked out. The gunman takes the snowmobile and Lorelei with him. Nathan and Merci try to find them and rescue Lorelei with his knowledge of the area. The adventure keeps going on the whole book. Lots of surprises in store for them during the spring blizzard. Lots of questions that finally get answered towards the end. I would love to see Nathan's twin get his own book. Thier is nothing in the book that needs a warning for. I was given this ebook to read in exchange for honest review from Netgalley. 06/26/2012 PUB Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense
Merci Carson’s car broke down just before she was due to visit her aunt in Oregon. A fellow student from the Montana State University, Lorelei Frank, has offered to take her. Only now on an icy covered mountain road in Idaho, Lorelei loses control of the car & they end up off the road, wedged in the snow. Merci is wary of the 2 men who are passing in their car offering help, but with no cell service Lorelei is eager for their help. But instead of helping with the car, Merci discovers them rifling through her suitcase – & then they pull a gun on her!
Enter EMT Nathan McCormick on his snowmobile. He rescues the 2 women & takes them to his cabin for safety. Then during the night Lorelei disappears, the thieves taking her & the snowmobile. Now Nathan & Merci need to rescue her, & somehow get off this mountain alive.
As Nathan & Merci work together & keep each other alive they form a kinship with each other. Both know that this short time has not been enough time for them to fall in love. Yet they have endured more trauma & trials than most people face in a lifetime - & both know that at the end of this, they don’t want to have to say goodbye...that is, if they even make it off this mountain alive.
A car accident, a snowstorm, armed thieves, shootings, murder...a story of survival in subzero temperatures, & a handsome hero to the rescue – another winning suspense & faith filled story from Sharon Dunn.
Title: ZERO VISIBILITY Author: Sharon Dunn Publisher: Love Inspired Suspense July 2012 ISBN: 978-0373083183 Genre: Romantic suspense
Why was she a target?
Merci Carson doesn’t have a clue—but she knows she owes her life to the quiet man who roared to her rescue in his snowmobile. EMT Nathan McCormick is used to handling challenging situations, but between the unexpected blizzard that stranded the lovely student and the desperate men chasing her, he has his hands full. Yet for Nathan, failure is not an option. Merci’s bravery and kindness challenges his guarded heart, making him start to hope for the future. Together, they could be something special—if they solve the mystery in time.
ZERO VISIBILTY is attention getting. I was hooked from the first page. Two college girls, on the way home for Christmas break when they get into an accident on a back road. But the rescuers that stop attempts to rob them—and when Nathan roars up, Merci and Nathan try to work together to kidnap the other girl, Lori, back from the kidnappers.
What are the robbers looking for? Why are they desperate enough to kill for it? Is Lori a victim or an accomplish? I had to keep reading to find out. Some of the events are unbelievable. Will two people really chase after bad guys with guns in a blizzard with no weapons and no plan? But with the suspension of disbelief, it was a good, exciting read. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $5.75. 217 pages. 4 stars.
I enjoyed this book. Merci is just trying to get home to her aunt for the school break. Finals stunk and someone breaking into her place wasn't what she needed. Since her car broke down, she caught a ride with an acquaintance and they got stuck in the snow on the side of the road. Thinking they were being rescued by two somewhat creepy men, everything changes when guns are pulled and a stranger rushes in to save their lives. Merci and Nathan have to fight for their lives and their attraction is almost as thick as the snow around them. I really liked Merci. She was trying to make it in life without relying on her father so she doesn't have to comply with all his ideals. That means she isn't a typical student but she does work hard for everything. Nathan wasn't supposed to be up at his family's cabin but God works things in His timing. His being there was perfect timing, even if it put him in danger. It also put him in the perfect place to save Merci's life and them to get together. I just like the way God's providence is woven through the whole story. This was a 4/5. Solid suspense and good romance.
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book (via netgalley). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
What can I say this is my first book by Sharon and WOW. I was going to read one chapter before bed but at 2 am in the morning the book was finished. The first paragraph hooked me and there was no way I could put this book down. I needed to know what next would Merci and Nathan be safe, What about her friend who was with her in the car, why where they being chased. Merci is on her way to visit her Aunt for Spring break and sharing a ride with a fellow student when they run of an icy road. Nathan has a cabin in the mountains and comes across them in a dire situation. The cold adds to this story. I could feel the cold they were feeling, I could feel the danger and I was trapped I could not have put this book down for anything. I have read other books I didn't want to put down but this one just held me. If I put it down I would have worried all night what happened next and I have to say I was really tired at the time. This book has several surprises in it a few I saw coming and a few that I didn't expect. This is in my top three books of the year and I would say its number one at this stage. Excellent read. Wish I could give 6 out of 5 stars.
What an action filled story! This is a great suspense story with a touch of romance. The author is an excellent writer and wrote this story to perfection!
This story finds the main characters dealing with issues during a snowstorm. The suspense is well written and will have you on the edge of your seat. The interaction of the characters is believable and easy to read. The whole book flows well and is a fun read.
I gave this book 5/5 stars. I liked the suspense of the main characters meeting. I liked how they helped each other out and thought the author did great at showing how this might happen when you don’t know the other person very well. I liked how the story moved quickly and also came to an appropriate ending. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspense novel with some clean romance thrown in!
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.
Zero Visibility was a nice read, though not one of my favorite Love Inspired Suspense books. The story was interesting and kept my attention, but I didn't really care for the writing - it seemed to repeat things needlessly and just wasn't that crisp. Also, some things didn't seem that believable to me.
The characters were fine. I liked the attraction between Nathan and Merci, but I have to say, it did seem like things progressed really fast.
I really liked the setting for Zero Visibility. Being stuck on a mountain with the bad guys added a great layer of suspense.
Overall, Zero Visibility was an okay read.
*I received an eBook copy via Netgalley for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
Merci Carson has a target on her back but she has no idea why. All she knows is that she owes her life to Nathan McCormick. As an EMT Nathan is use to handling challenging situations. However he never expected to find himself caught in a blizzard with a lovely student that has some pretty desperate men after her. Merci and Nathan grow close as they face the challenges around them. But if they don't figure out why the men are after her they might not make it out of the mountains alive.
The story of Merci and Nathan is about the need to survive, physically but there is an undercurrent about surviving toxic relationships. I was happy to see that Nathan and his brother do reconcile at the end. By the way this would be a great book to read on a hot summer day! By the end of the story you will be wrapped in a blanket. I was freezing!
I totally loved this story. It was fast paced and kept my attention. Merci Carson is just minding her own business, going to visit her aunt. Suddenly pandemonium breaks out and everything is just happening at the same time without a chance for anyone to figure out what is going on. The easy relationship that builds between Nathan and herself was nice.
The reuniting of Nathan's relationship with his brother was a little strange to me though. I was suspicious of Daniel and wasn't really sure what was up with him at the end. I kept thinking... well, if I said what I kept thinking, I'd have to put a spoiler alert on here.
Was a good story! Have enjoyed all Sharon Dunn's books that I have read.
This book captured my attention from the very first page. I didn't want to put it down as I walked with Merci and Nathan through the worst storm of their life. The way the author kept getting them into and out of trouble was great and I found myself on the edge of my seat a couple times wondering how they would ever get out of this situation.
I like the way the book ended, but there wasn't a strong romantic connection in the end. He was considering asking her out before they got into the high-stress situation, though, so I think their love was for real...
The concept of this novel, in which a college student is set up by a supposed friend so her boyfriend can obtain a rare book, was unique enough to keep my attention. While the numerous attempts to silence Merci (the college student) and Nathan (her happenstance rescuer) were a bit too fraught at the middle of the book, the pace kept it moving along. The fact that both Merci and Nathan questioned the speed of their feelings for each other (the whole book took place over the course of three days) actually made the short time frame work for me.
I loved the setting for this suspense novel, on a mountain during a blizzard. I really liked the H/h, and enjoyed their attraction to each other. Unfortunately the setting only added to the unbelievability of the events. This book is like a cartoon in book form! With rapid-fire escapes from continuous life or death situations! If the author would have left most of those out, it would have been a far more realistic and suspenseful read, instead of causing so much eye-rolling!
I enjoyed this story. It had just the right mix of suspense and budding romance with some Christian religious references mixed in. It is suspenseful, romantic, and clean, as has been true of all of the "Love Inspired Suspense" books that I have read. I have loved all of them, and would recommend them to everyone.
She just wants to go home and recharged herself , now she's on the run for her life with a good Samaritan that knows the snowy mountains better than her. Nathan and Marci survival skills are to be tested , Not just only physical but emotionally too . Why they are after them ? Well it kept me till 80% of the book wondering too, suspenseful and thrilling story.
From the time Lorelei's car skids into a snowbank until almost the end of the book, this is a virtually non-stop thriller ride: evading criminals, trying to survive, and wondering if Nathan and Merci are going to make it off the mountain.
(One minor quibble: Ms. Dunn does not seem to be able to distinguish between the homophones PEAK, PEEK, and PIQUE.)
Usually, I don't like a book such as this, as, ultimately, it was one "car chase" after another, and there were alternative ways to resolve matters. However, this book grabbed me, and I found it exciting and compelling.
I enjoyed this book the adventures was good but running in snow for hours not sure if it went on to long romance in this book isn't that romantic more like two people in a situation trying to survive and kiss that's sums up the romantic but I did enjoy this book tho x
Seemed a little far fetched and the author needs to research better. Willow trees don't grow high in the mountains with the pine trees. Bad guys acted illogically. Good guys acted illogically, too . Don't know if I'll read this author again.
I enjoyed this quick paced book. The action just kept going. Merci and Nathan hardly had a chance to catch their breath. I felt the same way as I read. I just kept turning pages and ended up finishing the book in one day.
First impressions: Zero tension, zero chemistry. But lots and lots of o_0 moments. This book is sponsored by the Department of Very Convenient Coincidences.
This was a well-written and entertaining suspense novel. I did think the romance element was rather far-fetched, which dropped it to 3 stars for me. It was a fast and fun read.
the story was really suspenseful and kept me interested but I did not like the narration. Too much he's and she's for my taste but pretty good story overall
