This is exactly the kind of American Romance book I like; real, down-to-earth characters with flaws that everyone can relate to all taking place in cowboy-land! A great start to this mini-series.

The author paints a vivid picture of the ranching setting, and the passion the characters feel for their world is wonderfully portrayed. The hero is wonderful, and his love for what he does, is very clear. I really enjoyed reading about all the interactions with the horses, it was very moving - even though I had to look up nearly every term as I know nothing about horses!

The love story between the hero and heroine plays out beautifully, and it is nicely uncomplicated in the sense that there was no other conflict apart from the characters own issues that they worked through as the story progressed.

'Lovely' is the word here, the whole book is very heart warming.

Overall, this is a very satisfying romance and, in my opinion, the very definition of books from this line. Cathy McDavid does a nice job of introducing characters and hinting at issues that we will discover in coming books in this series. Can't wait for the next.

Loyalty to family can be taken too far when it's used as a shield against making hard emotional decisions. That's where Aidan Hart finds himself when he just can't seem to say the words that would confirm how he feels about Flynn McKinley. But if he doesn't step up, she may just leave town as she's been threatening, in order to go to college to obtain a degree that will help her support her unborn baby.

It doesn't matter that Aidan insists he wants to be an involved dad; Flynn isn't sure she can trust him. Not like she did years earlier; not like she did her ex-husband; and not like she did her mother, who deserted their family.

So, how is all this going to end? Leave it to a beautiful stallion to set the stage for some hard decisions.

Could not finish. Heroine too unlikeable, TSTL. One of those women, unable to trust, so any poor guy who wastes his time with this type, will spend the rest of their life trying to prove themselves, and no one is worth that lifetime of hassle! I am also not into graphic sex scenes.
Won't be bothering with any of the others in this series, about the hero's self-centered brothers, because I couldn't stand their characters!

I downloaded McDavid’s novella that kicked off this new series, and I was sucked into the small town and the folks within it. So when I saw the first novel pop up on NetGalley, I knew I would have to get my dose of sexy cowboy.

Flynn and Ace are next door neighbors, business competitors, and come from families that can rival the Hatfield and Mccoy rivalry. But they have also been friends, and as kids were even star-crossed lovers. Now that they are adults, Flynn is hoping they might have a chance to pick up their relationship and move past the family BS and be together. What Flynn never expected was to get knocked up and wondering if the love of her life only wants to be with her for their child, or if he actually cares.

Ace has put his family before himself for longer than he can remember. He picks up the slack day in and day out, and the thought of adding a baby to the mix scares him as much as it excites him. Given the fact that Flynn is the mother makes Ace that much more excited. He’s wanted her for longer than he can remember, but what does a workaholic vet and rancher have to offer his dream woman?

I actually quite liked this book. There is something about the friends to lovers, star crossed lovers, secret baby, cowboy hero that just does it for me. Throw them all into one, and while it can be a little overloaded at times, I really liked both Ace and Flynn and their romance.

One of the things I really liked about this book was despite the fact that Flynn was head over heels in love with Ace, she also stuck to her guns. She didn’t want to marry him for the baby, she wanted love and affection and adoration and all the good things that come with marriage. While it was obvious that saying no broke her heart a little each time, I liked seeing her stick to her desires, and making Ace really work at courting her, wooing her. It made for a fun romance read.

While I liked Ace and was glad to see Flynn push him into really romancing her, he did annoy me at times. He was so wrapped up in his own life, his ranch, his family, that he had a hard time stepping out of the box and looking at life from another angle. He couldn’t see why Flynn wasn’t falling at his feet at the idea of a convenient marriage, and he couldn’t seem to get over his brother’s faults to see the man he was becoming. I definitely wanted to find some way to help Ace snap outta his little bubble and get him to see what was going on in everyone else life around him.

I have to say though, the little dates that Ace took Flynn on were sweet, and the romance was one that I enjoyed reading from start to finish. It was obvious that Ace tried, and once the lights started coming on for him, he really did try everything he could think of to get Flynn to stay with him, be with him.

I’m a little anxious to read the remainder of the books in this ongoing series, not because I don’t like the secondary characters, but more because the authors will be switching from book to book. When I saw the list of other authors, I didn’t recognize any of their names off hand, and while some of the secondary characters intrigued me enough to give it a shot, I will be a little hesitant to read more of the series.

All in all I really enjoyed this sweeter cowboy romance book. It wasn’t as smutty as most of the other cowboy books I’ve read, and I liked the change. Both Flynn and Ace were great characters, and watching them navigate the murky waters of feuding families and a complicated past with a baby in their future, was a sweet experience. I enjoy the theme of the series being all about one particular horse as well, I think it’s a neat way to tie together the characters and town.

KcLu and Slick's review posted on Guilty Pleasures

Aidan: Loyal Cowboy is the first book by Cathy McDavid for me, and I have to say I would read more by her!

The main character Ace is such a good man, but he guards himself maybe too good because of the pains of the past. I liked his love Flynn, and I didn’t like her. I think I saw alot of me in her, and that side of her I didn’t like. We have all had past heartaches, and guard ourselves sometimes too much because of them.

This book starts three weeks after they got together, and Ace’s fears had him leaving Flynn hurt the next morning. The one thing neither of them expected was for her to end up pregnant. Now he has to convince her to take a chance on him, and to not move an hour away.

This book is not a quick “oh I’m pregnant .. get married, and live HEA” type of romance. Flynn makes Ace prove he is worth taking a chance on, and he does everything he can think of to do that. Some people may think she takes it a tad far, but I think she did right by her and her baby. I don’t think any marriage should start with doubts and questions. It was great to read a romance that was realistic in timeline and feelings without it being a rush to HEA. I recommend checking this one out!!

KcLu gives Aidan: Loyal Cowboy 3.75 Stars

The Family Plan is a “bonus” book that is included with Aidan: Loyal Cowboy by Cathy McDonald. It was originally published in 2008. This is a sweet friends to lovers story with some drama thrown in along the way. It is a pleasant and entertaining read.

Jolyn Sutherland returns home to Blue Ridge following a riding accident that could have killed her. She’s endured many surgeries, physical therapy, and still has a limp and pain. But, she’s ready to move home and open her own company as a contractor. She’s studied and worked hard and is ready to start her life over again. Her best friend Chase Raintree is glad to have her back but can’t believe how much she’s changed. They shared a kiss long ago that they both have never forgotten, but then Chase went back to his girlfriend Sherry Anne and eventually married her. Now divorced and raising his 8 year old daughter on his own, Chase hopes maybe he can Jolyn can become more than friends. Trouble is Jolyn’s mother is set on proving that her son fathered Mandy (Chase’s daughter) and that adds another complication to their relationship.

Jolyn is a strong female lead character and despite the setbacks in her life, she goes after what she wants. She’s not afraid of hard work or pushing her self, it’s the reason she’s even walking after her accident. I like that she speaks her mind to everyone. She’s not afraid to tell people what she thinks even her mother.

Chase is a great hero. He’s sensitive but strong. He is fiercely protective of his daughter, Mandy and to some extent Jolyn. He knows a relationship with Jolyn will be difficult because of her family situation and because Mandy isn’t ready for him to begin dating. But, he also realizes how good he feels when Jolyn is around. He knows it’s important that she is in his life.

I really enjoyed the way Jolyn and Chase’s relationship progressed during this book. They didn’t rush; there wasn’t a need as they know each other so well. They also realize Mandy’s feelings must be taken into account because they both feel; she’s the most important factor in their budding relationship. Despite the drama from Jolyn’s Mom, Chase’s ex-wife, a health scare, and the paternity question; the story was well done. This is an engaging romance with a little sweet sex thrown in on the side. A nice summer read at the beach or by the pool.

2.5 stars for the first one, 4 stars for the second one. Rounding up to 4 total, because of the second book.

Aidan: Loyal Cowboy is the story of Aidan and Flynn, who were once romantically involved, but got derailed by the death of Aidan's father and subsequent family responsibilities. She goes off to marry someone else, gets divorced and comes back to her hometown. Then one night, Aidan and Flynn rekindle their romance. Aidan, thinking that he has nothing to offer her, walks out the next morning with no intention of leading her on, regretting that he has let his love and passion for her get too far.

Shortly after that night, Flynn finds out she's pregnant. When she tells Aidan, he immediately proposes, but Flynn refuses because she's afraid Aidan only proposes out of a sense of responsibility.

At that point, Flynn became a whiny, stupid, nitwitty heroine and her waffling and "OMG, but he hasn't said he loves me" became annoying. Yeah, yeah, I understand that she's a little wary because her first husband put work before her and didn't love her, and that she will only get married again for love, but my goodness, marriage is not just passion but also respect, friendship and a willingness to work with your partner.

Aidan thinks he's not good enough, and despite doing everything he can to show Flynn how he feels, he can't say the words. So he's a guy. Big deal. Flynn needed to put on her big girl panties in that scenario.

Sure, he's just as much at fault, for working too hard, for not delegating enough, for thinking that nobody can do whatever job as well as he can. And he learns that lesson at the end.

Still, the whiny waffling on the heroine's part got on my nerves, and I almost wanted her to just poof away and have Aidan find someone else.

The writing flows really well, and the dialogue felt natural and realistic. 3.5 stars for the writing itself, 1.5 stars for whiny, immature heroine, 2.5 stars for plot predictability.

The second book, The Family Plan, tells the story of Jolyn and Chase, friends since childhood, who always sort of secretly pined for each other. After a horrific riding accident, Jolyn returns to her hometown after having been gone for 9 years. Chase has built a veterinary practice in town, and is raising his daughter after her mother split to pursue her rodeo dreams.

I adored these two characters. Their story was sweet, despite setbacks and a rather big fight, but neither held a grudge, and both realized that being with each other was worth fighting for. They didn't let the issues surrounding them stand in their way.

The ending felt a wee bit rushed, with all the issues being resolved in a much too quick manner for my taste, which is why I can only give this 3.5 stars. Much like the first book, the writing flows well, the dialogue is believable and natural, and the characters seemed rather well fleshed out. Again, the plot was a little predictable, but nonetheless interesting to follow.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.

The worst thing about this book is its truly cringeworthy title, though I guess it means that what's on the outside of the tin is a pretty accurate description of what's inside. I like a touch of romance in my reading but except for one Mills and Boon more than thirty years ago I've never been a reader of formula romances, so I thought it was about time I tried one.

I suppose as far as they go this is up to standard. The writing style is transparent; the characters are well developed; Ms McDavid writes horses well (sometimes better than people) and seems to know her stuff about rodeos, vets and horse breeding. The plot is slight and all the problems would have been resolved on the first page if Ace had told Flynn he loved her. There - that was it. Spoiler.

But this is formula romance. I guess the main characters are allowed to be stupid and avoid resolving their relationship until the end of the book otherwise there would be no romantic tension.

So... plot.

Flynn and Aidan (Ace) live on neighbouring ranches. They had a thing going back in their student days but Ace's dad – a mean drunk – almost ruined the family farm due to mismanagement. When he died Ace dumped Flynn due to impending pressure of work and took over the farm as well as running his vet practice, taking on all the hard work while his brothers did their own thing, one riding the rodeo circuit and not to be depended upon, the other skipping off to join the marines. Broken-hearted Flynn married on the rebound, but that didn't work out – mainly because her husband put work before her. Now Flynn's back home and due to an unfortunate night of passion with Ace (before the book opens) she's pregnant

Ace wants Flynn to marry him so he can look after her and they can raise their baby together but absent-mindedly forgets to tell Flynn that he's been suppressing his love for her for years. Flynn loves him but doesn't think he loves her. Oh sure he'll take on the responsibility of a family. He's good at grabbing responsibility and hoarding it. She sees a workaholic and wants to be sure she'll not be ignored like last time. Yeah, right, it will be no surprise that eventually they figure things out.

There's a sub-plot about rehabilitating a mistreated rodeo stud stallion (and possibly more than the average reader wants to know about collecting stallion sperm for artificial insemination) which resolves.

There's an unresolved sub plot with the two brothers. Colt acts as though his nose has been put out of joint when he learns of Flynn's pregnancy, but there's never any reason given. The other brother is never on the page, but apparently has been discharged from the Marines but hasn't been in touch since then. I expected this to be resolved at the wedding (What? Did that come as a surprise?) but the last we hear Colt just fails to show up for best man duties and the ex-marine sub plot remains unresolved.

I can only assume they are dealt with in another book since this is number MCDIX (1409) in the American Romance series, but I can't find details on the author's website.

Aidan loyal Cowboy by Cathy McDavid
4 stars
Thier is really two stories in the ebook I was given to read by Netgalley.
The first is Aiden Loyal Cowboy. Aiden is a hard worker he is a Vet. and helps runs his family horse business. Aiden broke up with Flynn in collage after his dad died leaving the ranch in a mess.
Now Flynn is living back at the ranch next to Aiden after her divorce. They ended up eating dinner at same place and ended sleeping together. After Aiden made excuses and left. He did not call her but after running into 3 weeks later apolgised.
Flynn was pregnant but she was not getting married just because she was having a child. Flynn wanted to be first with Aiden and wanted his love.
Aiden did not want Flynn to move to another town. He wanted her to marry him. Aiden wanted to be with her but was too busy to spend all his time with 'Flynn between his Vet practice and running the ranch. Something had to give.
I liked the characters and could understand both points of views. Want to also know what Aiden's brothers are up too. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review.

Family Plan by Cathy McDavid
Family Plan is the bonus book included in the ebook I recieved.
4 STARS
It was copywrited 2008.
I enjoyed it. Great strong women characters.
Jolyn Sutherland has come after being on the road for 9 years in the Wild and Wooly West Equestrian show. she rode bareback and jumped a wagon full of mock settlers. Till the last show when they missed and she almost lost her leg.
Jolyn while she was having surgery after surgery and physical therapy got her contractors license and is going into business in her own small home town.
Chase Raintree is the town vet. He is an old friend of Jolyn and even kissed once. He married her best friend from high school. Now divorced and single father. He hired Jolyn to build his new vet clinic.
Mandy his Chase's 8 year old daughter well their is a chance he wasn't but he did not want to have DNA testing done to find out.
Jolyn mom has been trying to push Chase to get the testing done because their is a chance that Mandy is her grandaughter. Steven Jolyn brother had a affair with SherryAnne after she was only married three months.
This was a animal friendly story.
I admire Chase willing to raise his daughter by himself and not wanting to take an easy out.

This was book one of the Harts of Rodeo Series and boy what a start ! Aidan (or Ace as he is known by friends) is the most loyal kind of guy you will find. Strong, sexy, dependent and always there to help plus bonus he loves animals! Only as loyal as he is to his families ranch he has never been that committed to the one woman that holds his heart.

Yes ladies we have a "if there is a job to do or someone that needs help I am out of here date or no date " kind of man. But as the blurb suggests the man is serious about taking care of his child. And what followed was a sweet adorable romantic read about two people who both have their own ideas about raising a child and being apart of each others lives. Their unbridled passion for each other really heated up the pages and had me rooting for them all the way.

I loved how the author introduced me to the family, friends and other members of the town, making sure to let you get to know everyone and at the same time intriguing you just enough to make you wonder what lies behind everyone's image they try to uphold. She also introduced me to one heck of a gorgeous horse !

I laughed out loud at Aidan's various attempts at getting Flynn to agree to marry him and I also felt really sad each time he failed. But I also loved how the author showed just exactly how Aidan realises what Flynn really needs. Aidan's sense of humor was to die for !But one thing I will say is this is one cowboy that you will not want to miss. I for one I am looking forward to the next installment of the series ... Good book. Flynn has been in love with Ace for years, but every time they seem to be getting closer, his family responsibilities pull him away. He is the oldest of the four siblings and when his father died, leaving the ranch in financial difficulty Ace saw it as his job to step up. One brother devotes his time to rodeo, avoiding the ranch whenever he can, the other joined the Marines, and their sister is the sheriff of their town. Ace also has a busy vet practice, leaving him little time for anything else. When a one night burst of passion leaves Flynn pregnant, Ace immediately proposes. But Flynn had already been through one marriage where her husband put his work first over their relationship and she wasn't going to do it again. Plus, he has never actually said that he loves her. Ace is stunned when Flynn says no, but won't give up. Unfortunately, it seems that whenever he takes Flynn out something comes up to interrupt them. Flynn finally gave up and made plans to move away and start a new life, close enough for Ace to visit the baby, but giving her the distance she needed. During the last argument, Flynn accused Ace of using family to avoid making commitments, that he had never really given anyone else a chance to help. I was glad to see that Ace finally realized what he had been doing wrong. While I understood Flynn's point of view, I often felt that she was being kind of unreasonable about some things. I was glad to see that they were finally able to reach the compromises necessary to be happy.

Is loyalty always a good thing? Flynn wasn't so sure after being dumped by Aiden "Ace" years ago while at college. He had his reasons of course, the death of his father and the responsibilities he assumed for the family. So Flynn decided to concentrate on her career and eventually married a man with similar aims. Except she didn't quite realise those aims would prevent them having a family and lead to him dumping her. Succumbing to Aiden again might have seemed like a good idea once she returned home. Until he dumped her again before the sheets had cooled.
His reasoning of course was sound. He had too many responsibilities and wasn't good enough for Flynn. Not that Flynn agreed this time round either. Which only made things more complicated when she found herself pregnant. No way was she going to fall into the trap of marrying a man who could be loyal to his family and his job at the expense of his woman. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
How does a guy who convince a girl she comes first when every time they had a date he dumps her for work or family? He doesn't. It's gonna take some big time wake up calls for Aiden to find his happy ending.
We the lucky reader can see they are Made For Each Other but both of them need to grow and learn before they can make it together.
I enjoyed this read. I haven't read much in the American Romance line as it isn't available in Australia. The characters are very real and down to earth and the background of rural America well drawn and interesting.

This book is a quick read as are most of the Harlequin Romance stories. This is a nice book to read in an afternoon. The characters are nice. Ace is the responsible one, the brother that stood up and helped his mom hold down the fort when his dad died. Flynn is the girl he was seeing before his dad died and then stopped seing so he could concentrate on his family business and keeping things together for his family. Now years later Ace and Flynn reconnect, the sparks are there but is Flynn secure enough in trusting that Ace will be there for her and their unborn child. Ace wants Flynn to trust him but he still feels drawn to his families problems and solving them. Can he back off a bit an let his brothers take up some of the clack. The story is a good one and you see Flynn and Ace grow and work together to ensure that they have their own happy ending.

This would be more a 2.5. This book consisted of two stories Aidan and then The Family Plan. The first story I didn't really care for. The characters just felt flat and I never really cared for them. The second story seemed much more developed and I really came to care for what happened to Chase and Jolyn, though I wanted to smack Jolyn's mother. The two stories together would have been a solid 3 stars for me if not for really really wanting to smack Jolyn's mother. In the end.. Aiden not so good. The Family Plan... fun and loving characters.

Woulda loved this book more because Cathy McDavid is one good writer but the heroine, Flynn, was too demanding, imho. Ace, our hero, has a job, has a family, has responsibilities, and all Flynn is doing is worrying about why he doesn't say those three little words. Anyone else would have known love is an action and not sentimental bs.
