Another winner from this author, we met James in the last book, he is prosecutor and comes from a very wealthy family and has political aspirations, his life is mapped out and when trying to strengthen the case against a corrupt judge(from the last book), he calls in the heroine Maggie and doesn't get what he expected. Maggie was a abused, drug user, prostitute with 17 cases against her, but the woman he meets is not the same, she is classy and not the abused woman he expected and tells him off very nicely, how he can't make her testify. He is intrigued by her and attracted though he knows it is wrong and can't go anywhere.
I loved Maggie, she had had a horrific past, abused as a child, went down the wrong path and almost killed herself before finding a woman named Nan who rescued her and in the past nine years she has re-built her life and James wants her to re-visit it and depose against a judge who used her.
James comes across as a man out for only his own good but over the course of the book he changes and grows and even stands up to his parents and tells them he will marry who he chooses and it's his decision to run for office or not, even the threat of being cut off doesn't phase him because he wants Maggie, past and all and he discovers that it is not your job which defines you.
Maggie was such a strong heroine, she had to overcome a lot in life, had been shamed by people but I loved that even when she was scared she stood up to the snobby people in James circle and even to her own abuser.
I liked the romance and loved her friend, FBI agent Yellow Bird who seems to have a sad past(lost his wife) and deserves a story of his own.
This had intrigue, was suspenseful, and of course, left it on a cliffhanger. It continues the side story of a rotten judge from the last book, and the prosecutor who is trying to put him away. Amongst them, is a witness who needs to be protected from the judge as well as some nasty piece of work from her past. I really enjoyed this book. It was a page Turner, and I can't wait to see how it ends. Although I can guess, as I've read enough of these books! 😄
James, a blue blooded lawyer has had his life all mapped out for as long as he can remember; His plan: Win this Case; get married to a woman hand-picked by his mother and run for President.
James is currently working on the case of his life and meets Maggie when she summoned to his office as a potential witness on the case.
I did a double take when Maggie a native American heroine is introduced in this book; Maggie had a hard life and a hell of a rap sheet, an ex-drug addict and a prostitute. I had to flip the cover to make sure I was reading a Harlequin series….to say I was a little bit surprised is putting it mildly. I was definitely intrigued by the characters and the storyline and interested to read how James and Maggie would get to their HEA.
I loved the flow of this story; the book has a fresh voice and is beautifully written. The conflicts the characters face are real and the romance heartwarming. I am so impressed with the author Sarah M Anderson for pushing the boundaries with this book and for taking the road less travelled.
Safe to say - Sarah 1st book 'A Man of His Word' is now added to my TBR list
‘A Man of Privilege’ is an excellent contemporary romance, with multidimensional characters, sexual tension and a bit of mystery to wrap things up nicely.
This is the second of this series, the story of lawyer James Carlson who appears in A Man of His Word. He is a man of destiny, born to privilege and on a path to the White House. Never putting a foot wrong is his motto, doing what is expected, his mantra. He never expected a former drug addict and prostitute to be the one to rattle his chains and make him rethink everything he's ever wanted. Maggie Eagle Heart is well named. With help from the elderly Nan, another strong woman she met at her lowest ebb, she's rebuilt her life from the ground up. A respectable business woman she lives an isolated nun like existence off the beaten track until James needs her to be backup for a corruption case he's working on. This is the case that will launch his political career, a perfect political marriage and life in Washington D.C. If only he could stop thinking about Maggie, wanting Maggie. Maggie knows wanting James is a mistake. She's been screwed around by too many lawyers and judges, in every sense of the word. Besides which, his world is on a different planet and his ambitions make any chance of a relationship out of the question. But he says he's fond of her. And maybe she feels the same way. With a background of corruption, following on from the revelations in A Man of His Word, Sarah M Anderson keeps us on edge wondering what will happen with the case, what will happen if Maggie has to testify and what will happen if James wins his case and goes all out for Washington. It is at Washington that the crunch will come as James takes Maggie to further the case. There she will see the truth about who James is in his natural environment. There James will be confronted by the realities of the futures he's chosen and will have to make his decision. Heat level was not as obvious in this story. Perhaps because the protagonists had less opportunities to explore that side of their relationship because of the restriction of the lawyer witness dynamic. They were well done and believable. The story made me teary again at the end. These guys are really good guys. Looking forward to the next one. A Man of Distinction.
We see Rosebud and another of James Carlson's ex-lovers, his potential perfect political wife Pauline. Could have done without that one being spelled out but it was minor in the context of a very good and well written story. That was the reason why it didn't get the full five stars. Count it as four and a half.
Good book. James goes to Maggie to get her testimony to help bring down a corrupt judge. If he wins this case he will be on his planned road to political office, and he won't let anything get in his way. Maggie is a former drug addicted prostitute, but she has turned her life around. She refuses to let herself be intimidated. When he tries to bluff her into helping him, she calls him on it and walks out. She surprises him, and he feels an intense attraction to her also. He also knows he can't do anything with it because it could ruin his case. He goes back to Maggie, apologizes, and appeals to her for her help. I loved Maggie and her strength of character. Even when she was scared she was able to stand up for herself. I loved her attitude at the cocktail party in DC. James was a little harder to warm up to. At first he seemed to be all about himself and what he needed to advance his position. It was obvious from the beginning, though, that he did have the strength of character to avoid corruption and to want to do the right thing. He was intent of trying to protect Maggie and not have to use her testimony if he could avoid it. I loved seeing him grow and change in this book, and get a better idea of what it was he wanted, not just what was expected of him. I loved the scene with him and his parents and how he finally stood up to them. The conclusion was fantastic. I hope to see more of them in the next book. I'd also like to see Tom Yellow Bird get his own story.
James Carson is a successful lawyer, future senator and maybe even one day President. When he hears about the corrupt judge who let off women defenders in return for sexual favours, he realises this is the case that could pave the way for his future. He has plenty of evidence but he is a man who likes to have an insurance policy and that comes in the form of former meth addict Maggie. Setting his FBI partner on her trail, he is expecting the addict to be easy to sway around to his side. But the picture in her file is nothing like the beautiful, professional woman that walks into his office.
Maggie has spent the last nine years of her life climbing up the social ladder and scraping herself off rock-bottom. Though she wants to put her past behind her, she refuses to deny who she once was. After James tries to railroad her into testifying for her, she walks out of his office without a backward glance; she allowed herself to be used by a man in a position of power before, it won’t happen again. Impressed by her resolve, James appears at her home, apologising and begging her to reconsider. After many reassurances that she won’t be called to the stand, she reluctantly agrees to put her testimony on tape.
The chemistry between them is flying, but they know it can’t go anywhere. James knows what such a thing would do to his case and potentially his career. Maggie knows that a man with such connections and money as James couldn’t possibly be interested in a former meth addicted prostitute. Still, neither of them can deny their own feelings of attraction and soon sparks lead to an encounter like none other they have experienced before. Will the differences in their background become too much to overcome once the case is closed?
I loved the first book which is why I so readily agreed to review the next one. These are rather sweet romances and I enjoyed the whole premise. In this book, we meet the rather spoilt James. I never once doubted that he was a good guy, but I did think he was rather self-serving at points. I don’t think he ever thought about Maggie’s role in the case until the proverbial crap starts to hit the fan. He states constantly that he doesn’t want to become his families stooge, that he wants to lead his own life and not become the politician they expect him to be, but he still stays on the path that they create for him. Yes, he has no intention of marrying the woman they have chosen, but the career path is dead on. It wasn’t til later in the book I think he truly became a real hero and started thinking about his heroine. His feelings for Maggie hit him like a two-by-four. I loved the fact that he never ever judged her by her past; he judges her by the woman that she has become. He is strong enough to overlook her faults and want to help protect her in the future; he is swoon worthy!
Maggie is a fantastic heroine. She was the victim of terrible abuse and this caused her to make some God awful choices in life. She bucked up, made a choice and turned her life around. She has been working damn hard and then some smarmy lawyer turns up at her door and tries to make her go back there. If it goes to court she will be dragged through it all again and everyone will know what she once was. I admired the fact that she did it anyway because it was the right thing to do...she was so strong! When she is thrust into the world of the rich and snobby, she copes so well! I loved the way that she stood up for herself and what she had become.
The one thing I enjoyed about the whole tale was the chemistry. There was no denying it or controlling it, it was just there! The building of the relationship was just lovely to see and there were plenty of feel good moments. The twists, turns and barriers in this relationship kept the story flowing at a lovely pace....it was a easy page turner.
A sweet, sexy page turner which was a truly romantic read from beginning to end.
It's been a long time since I have labeled a category romance "outstanding" but A MAN OF PRIVILEGE by Sarah M Anderson is a remarkable and outstanding story. Picture a high powered, toast of society special prosecutor, with a roadmap to the White House and looks that can rival any movie star. Picture him making the case of his career with the help of an ex-hooker/drug offender and also the woman that he has just fell for after a fifteen minute meeting. It's a crash waiting to happen or is it? I could not put this book down and it well be read over and over again!
This is one of the best, and most surprising, category romances I've read in a long time. The heroine is an ex-prostitute and former drug user. The hero is a lawyer with political ambitions, who is currently investigating a judge for corruption.
The element I liked most was how each of the characters behaved in a mature and honest way - no silly misunderstandings. They both had integrity - regardless of their upbringing. And I could believe in the HEA.
Decent novel, the hero wasn't a douche, thank god. He was a bit unorthodox in some cases but other than that I truly liked him. The heroine was a bit out there in my opinion but at times I felt sorry for her. I didn't really feel too strong of an emotional attachment to these characters unfortunately.
I absolutely loved the fact that the heroine had a less than perfect past, and that these two very different people could get their HEA. Reminded me of the movie Pretty Woman. I'll definitely be buying the first book in this series because my curiosity has been piqued about Rosebud.
James is a lawyer destined for the White House, so he knows he can't get involved with a prime witness who used to be a drug addicted prostitute. She's changed...but will he be able to change enough to be worth her love?
I thought this book was so good that it inspired me to write my first review for Goodreads. I started reading Harlequin, Mills and Boon, 30 years ago. This is one of the best I've read in all that time. Well written, and pithy. Great book, Sarah M. Will be reading the rest of your books!
An interesting story with a Native American heroine but not a lot of action and a few cliche events around hero. It seemed to be mostly angst over the whole relationship dilemma making characters appear weak. Attorney James asks Maggie to be a witness for a trial he is working on.
"Anderson's latest is a refreshing twist on the typical Desire, featuring a raw and powerful love story that is at times dark and savage, and then sweetly sexy." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 1/2 stars
