Rate this book
A Turbulent Reunion The dashing Captain Richard Everard has faced untold dangers at sea. Steering his young cousin through a London season, however, is a truly formidable prospect. The girl needs a sponsor, like lovely widow Lady Claire Winthrop-the woman who coldly jilted Richard years ago. Claire believed herself sensible in marrying a well-to-do viscount rather than a penniless second son. How deeply she regretted it! Now their fortunes are reversed, and Richard's plan will help settle her debts and secure his inheritance.  Yet it may yield something even more precious: a chance  to be courted by the captain once more.

I was in the mood for a lost-love story and this totally fit the bill. In some ways it reminded me of Persuasion by Jane Austen. I liked Richard in the first book, even though we didn’t get to see too much of him. I liked him even more in this one. I thought he was a good fit for Claire, although at times I think he could have been a little less commanding, especially taking into account her background. I’m sure they’ll work those kinks out though. It took me awhile to warm up to Claire, but once we get a little more of her background I could understand why she behaved the way that she did. Claire had been bossed around by her father, and then by her abusive husband. When she became a widow I think she decided she wasn’t going to let anyone boss her around anymore. So at times, she comes across a bit demanding, but it’s her way of sticking up for herself. I did like her relationship with Richard and how things played out with them.

This is one series you would want to read in order; I don’t think they’d stand well on their own. I also think that they’d be better read all together since a lot of the main plot points overlap from book to book.

Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable read. I’m enjoying the series more than I thought I would and look forward to reading the next two books. I haven’t really cared for cousin Vaughn all that much, so I’m curious to see if he’ll win me over in the next book.

Sweet 2nd chance romance + mystery

Captain Everard returns to the woman who jilted him years ago to negotiate a favor. Thus begins this sweet 2nd chance romance that takes place over the backdrop of an ongoing mystery (this is book 2 of a 4 book series) that threatens the life of Everard's niece.

The romance isn't surprising, but it's done well enough, with the clues to the mystery being dropped at a decent pace, that it kept me engaged to the end. As is typical for such series, the romance portion concludes happily, while the mystery is slightly more uncovered but left for the remaining installments to resolve

*Romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

***Caution: past domestic violence (no gory details)***

Regency England. Gave this 2 stars. Had kisses only.

Richard & Claire (daughter of an earl) had been in love
10 yrs prior. She said yes to his proposal, but afterward
her sire said no b/c Richard had insufficient funds to
treat her in the style to which she was accustomed.

10 years on, Richard now Captain of a merchant ship
& wealthy (but no braggard) offered Claire a job to
sponsor his niece Samantha in meeting the Queen &
having her first ton season. Claire agreed (as she
secretly had bill collectors at her door.) She'd been
widowed from her often-drunk spouse x 1 year.
Richard of auburn hair & beard, treated her better,
but she still feared could she choose a good man?
He gave orders like a captain, caught himself doing
this & then reversed this.

This story had too many tropes: 2nd chance love,
an uncle murdered? someone a traitor to England?
a marquess of questionable character? Sam
transitioning from country to city living. Sam falling
for her male cous Vaughn. A lady related by marriage
lifting items (from the main house) not belonging
to her.

MCs had pride, anger about the past, & let distrust
and impatience toward each other get in their way.
I wish the author had emphasized resolving these
elements more. IMO 25% on MCs + 75% on other
tropes.

This was wonderful!! A pure delight!! I enjoyed the first book in the Everard Legacy series, The Rogue's Reform, but The Captain's Courtship was even better! I warmed up to Claire immediately! In the first story, Adele, had been raised in a fine home with good manners and had attended one party before her father's untimely death and the loss of their family fortune so while Adele was able to tend to Samantha's education regarding what makes a lady, they needed Claire to really polish her up and prepare her for what was truly expected! Claire was the daughter of an Earl and the widow of a Viscount, raised in the best of privileged society, and at the height of her season, the belle of all the balls! Ten years later, she proved she still had the power to command the attentions of everyone when she graced a ballroom floor. She was perfect to sponsor Samantha! Claire's and Richard's romance blossomed beautifully! She'd been through so much and struggled desperately with fear and distrust but Richard repeatedly proved his purity of heart! Add to that, the continued mystery, intrigue, danger, attempted murder, and new revelations in regards to the dealings of Samantha's father, the former Baron, and we ride gun-ho into the next story!! I am so excited to continue reading this series!

This clean regency romance was well written and kept my interest through the entire story. The characters were likable and relatable. However, the romance was minimal and took a while for anything to happen. When it did, it wasn’t exciting. There was no thrill or tingle to it. I almost gave it 3 stars for that because I purchased it for the promise of romance more than anything else.

This is the 2nd book in the Everard legacy and it was a really good read. If you like a story similar to Persuasion (which I love) then you should check out this book.

Ten years ago Richard Everard offered for Lady Claire and was rejected. He turned to the sea to make his fortune and to become worthy of her. When he learned she married another he never looked back, until now. Now he needs Lady Claire Winthrop to sponsor his cousin Samantha in her upcoming Season. If Lady Claire doesn't agree, Samantha won't fulfill the terms of her father's will and Richard's brother and cousin will lose their inheritance. Though Richard is a bit bitter that Lady Claire rejected him, he still loves her and believes they are meant to be together. Lady Claire Winthrop has spent the last ten years regretting her hasty marriage the the handsome Lord Winthrop. Her marriage was not at all ideal and now she's an impoverished widow. She has learned to follow the Lord's path and stand up for herself but when Captain Richard Everard enters her house, she's uncertain what the Lord has planned for her. She's uncertain of her own judgement though Richard has absolute faith in her. Samantha is unsure of herself. With Claire's guidance she will blossom into a beautiful, confident young lady, but Richard would prefer Samantha stay her own sweet self and not become a copy of the strong-willed, selfish girl Lady Claire once was. Can he trust Lady Claire to do the right thing? Meanwhile, the Everards search for clues to their uncle's mysterious death. As Claire comes to know the lively Samantha, she learns to love the girl. When a dangerous enemy threatens the Everards, Claire learns to stand up and fight for those she loves. This story continues right where The Rogue's Reform left off and ends with the beginning of the Season. The story is a little slow in the first half until the real mystery begins. I was able to figure out who the villain was and I think I'm right about the arch villain but the characters seem unwilling to believe what they've been told. The obviousness of the villain doesn't take away from the romance plot. Even though Claire and Richard already know each other, they have to come to know each other again as adults. They've both changed a lot over the years and getting to know each other all over again isn't easy.

As usual, Regina Scott excels at this sort of thing. Her characters are so well-developed and the dialogue is so realistic that admiration turns to trust to friendship and finally romance. Of course the time line is a bit fast but ignore the fact that the story takes place over a few weeks and you have another excellent romance. The last third of the book sets up for the final book in the series; not only the mystery but also about Samantha's heart. Even though I guessed the villain and know there's a third book coming, I kept reading way too late into the night to get some answers to questions lingering from the first novel. I missed Jerome and Adele who were away but Lady Dallsten-Wallcot is there and of course, my favorite, Vaughn. I just love the handsome, fiery poet. I liked Samantha better than Claire. She's fun and feisty and a true Everard. If you're not Christian, you will still enjoy this book. The inspirational bits aren't too heavy handed. They can kind of be skipped over and the story still works. Just ignore the parts where Claire wonders about the Lord's plan for her and thinks about doing His will, etc. etc. I suppose that's the point of the story but it worked for me without it, especially since I had no idea what she was quoting most of the time. This is another great offering from Regina Scott.

"We must talk."

The new Lady Everard needs a sponsor for her first Season in London so she can be presented to the Queen. The only person the Everards can think would be suitable is the woman who jilted Richard Everard years ago. While he was off at sea to get a fortune suitable for supporting an earl's daughter, Lady Claire, pressurised by her father to make a suitable match, married Viscount Winthrop. For his cousin's sake, Richard will approach her, but has no intention of falling for her again.

Lady Winthrop now widowed, has suffered from an abusive marriage, & due to her late husband's debts, is now selling off the contents of her home, & eventually the house itself. She decides to accept Richard's offer of payment to sponsor his cousin Samantha for her debut Season. It will help her financially when she has to move to a smaller home, & sponsoring Samantha will give her one last Season with Society before her social standing becomes less. Falling in love is not part of the bargain - being married was not a pleasant experience, & is not one she wishes to repeat. She didn't count on someone not wanting Samantha to reach London, nor how her heart would so easily fall for a lost love.

I loved this 2nd book in The Everard Legacy, an action, mystery & faith filled Regency romance, continuing the story from The Rogue's Reform. It was nice to continue on the story with the Everards, & to watch Richard get his second chance at love, to see the next stage of the will being implemented, & to discover more about the mystery surrounding Lord Everard's death. While the background from book 1 is provided, you will have a fuller appreciation of the story & all its implications if you read The Rogue's Reform first.

Review on my blog (to be posted 9/24): http://christianbookshelfreviews.blog...

I read book one in the Everard Legacy earlier this year and really enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to reading book two, The Captain's Courtship. It didn't disappoint!

I loved the characters! I had already liked Richard, Vaughn, and Samantha from The Rogue's Reform, so it came as no surprise that I liked them in this book as well. I don't think Jerome, the other cousin, was in The Captain's Courtship at all. :( I'm hoping he'll be back in the third book, though.

A new character that I really liked was Claire. Claire was mentioned in The Rogue's Reform, but this book is the first time we meet her and learn her story. She had dealt with a lot in her life, so it was interesting to read her story and see where it took her.

The romance was sweet and overall I really enjoyed this book! It was a good historical romance read that I recommend if you enjoy these types of books.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

The Second book in The Everard Legacy:

Captain Richard Everard is a fearless sea captain but having to help his young cousin Samantha get through her first season in London is a very formidable prospect. In order to do that he needs to get Samantha a sponsor, like widow Lady Claire Winthrop. However Lady Clair happens to be the woman that coldly jilted Richard all those years ago.

Years ago Claire's father convinced Claire that she would be better off marrying a rich viscount instead of a second son who had no fortune. She has always regretted that mistake. Now Richard is back and promises to help Claire with her debts as long as she helps Samantha.

They will work together and possibly find a second chance at love.

I was so excited to see the second book in this series. I was intrigued about Lady Claire when she was mentioned in the first novel and was happy to find out what happened the first time between her and Richard. Next up is Vaughn's story. Plus someone has been working against the Everards and I can't wait to discover who it is.

This book was a bit of a disappointment. The heroine was probably one of the most unlikeable heroines I've ever encountered, and I pitied the hero for actually falling in love with her. Her un-Christian attitudes and behaviors are explained/justified later in the book, but that didn't change my opinion of her.

I read this book because I'm quite intrigued by Vaughn, the obvious hero of the soon coming third installment of this series, as well as the delightfully refreshing Samantha. I'm very much looking forward to reading their story as the dramatic tension has already been established by the author. The plot of these novels isn't what is lacking; it's character depth and development. I imagine this won't be the case with the next book as we already are acquainted with the dashing Vaughn who clearly needs redemption.

This is book is book two in a series, so maybe that threw me off a bit. There was an entire situation that left me a bit at sea until I figured out the players and what was at stake. I don't like that that entire over-reaching plot was really not moved forward at all in the course of the book, nor was the girl even brought out except in a rather rushed couple of chapters at the end. That left me more than a little disappointed as the entire book was supposed to be about this and we barely saw it.

Still was a sweet story, and I liked the couple enough to give the book three stars. May or may not look up the rest in the series.

I truly enjoyed The Captain's Courtship! I didn't realize when I got it that it is actually the second of I believe 3 books in the Everard Legacy Series, but its okay, it doesn't ruin any of the details from the first book!
The Captain's Courtship was intruiging and engaging! It's been the perfect thing for those quiet winter mornings after Christmas while I'm still on my holiday break from University. It have everything including adventure, love, faith, & mystery! I can't wait to give it a full review on my blog See Lizzie Read!

I really enjoyed this book as I love regency books. Claire had married a well-to-do viscount instead of Captain Richard Everard who did not have much money. Her life was miserable with her husband. At his death Claire realized she was penniless and the Captain with a turn of events was just the opposite. He comes back into her life and offers her the opportunity to be a sponsor to his young cousin through a London season. Fun reading.

This wasn't my favorite book in the series, but I did enjoy reading it. Richard and Claire are very likeable characters, and I loved their "second chance" story. I think the pace was a little lacking (for me), but the story definitely added to the enjoyment of the series overall. [3.5 stars]

An easy read. Things got a big confusing/weighed down for me once Claire and the Captain reach his family home, but I now know it is because this was the 2nd book in a series about the Everard family. As I hadn't read the first, I didn't know any of the family history, players, but once through that part it was back to easy reading. Completely clean.

Well-written, I just didn't care for the hero and heroine much, and the storyline was somewhat weak. I hope there is some resolution in the next book.
