Officer Dale Chesnutt is a lawman with a big, bloody problem. Slaughtered civilians are turning up in the sleepy town of Cypress, and the burden falls on him to end the carnage. But no sooner does he begin his investigation than he finds himself violently drawn to a sexy, mysterious woman… and a vicious creature strikes again at Dale's own family. Hidden among the faces on Cypress streets, unrecognizable to neighbors and friends, a culture of werewolves dating back a thousand years has found their ancient secrets threatened… and worth tearing their enemies to pieces for.
So this is just a sexual driven werewolf story. That's it. No grand plot. Basically a woman comes into town, infects people, fucks others, cop tries to figure it out, becomes said werewolf, and then a lot of fucking and death.
That's the whole book. It's highly entertaining in a trashy way and a easy read, but holy hell does the story do nothing new. Also, the art? What is it? Not too sure.
Surprisingly good. I should have known with Lapham writing it would be a good read, but it was still better than I was expecting.
This reads like an R rated horror movie, as there is plenty of graphic violence, nudity and sex, but there's also a real story underneath it all. It would actually make a pretty good movie.
This first volume seems to be a setup, but it stands on its own as well. We find out there's a clan of werewolves who have been living almost like a group of survivalists. Then the "disease" starts to spread and things get worse from there...
The art is good and perfect for the story. I think Avatar is a little underrated as a published, and this book proves that.
If you looking for a cool horror comic, specifically a werewolf book, this is one you need to read. Just be prepared for some nudity and violence, but you knew that.
Ferals is like a late night horror B movie. The story is not without some problems, but if you are a horror fan that wants a story about werewolves tearing people to shreds, you could certainly do worse.
Sick, gory and brutal. A tale of werewolves but not the typical lore. I had low expectations at the start, but the progression of the first 6 issues of Ferals actually blew me away. FBI type folks... hidden clan... ancient secrets... I'm sure there's more. Looking forward to Volume 2.
As another reader here said, this is just a big dumb sex and violence fest and it's not poetic or grandly plotted or filled with inedible character studies of depth and emotion. It's werewolves, fucking, fighting, and then second helpings of all of the above. So why's it so damn fun?
If you want a well-drawn gory werewolf story with lots of nudity then this is a read for you. The plot itself wasn’t the most engrossing but the artwork made up for it.
(Zero spoiler review) 4.5/5 Maye I'm being a tad generous, although I've read some real garbage in the last week or so, and this violent little tale certainly hit the spot in more ways than one. In fact, if the story took itself just a little but more seriously, I wouldn't even need to add any qualifier's, and it would just be an outstanding comic, period. Lapham's work on Stray Bullet's, which is undoubtedly his strongest and most well received work has allowed him to flex his literary arm into a number of smaller avenues, to mixed results. The only other Avatar title of his I've currently read is Caligula, which again, I may have been a tad generous on, for the simple fact that unapologetic, overtly mature content is under attack more then ever in the modern day, so I enjoy it immensely whenever I come across it. Forgiving a few of its foibles a little more than I should, perhaps. But Ferals is a far stronger work than Caligula. And it is only the occasional slip into the absurd with the writing that drags it down into the 'dumb fun' category that many may brand this. The story got stronger towards the end of the arc, with a few interesting little surprises and clever plot points introduced or subverted. It certainly isn't your typical werewolf tale. At least not yet anyway, and I'm rather glad it's not. The big standout though is the art, which courtesy of Andrade, had me dribbling over every page. His cleanly detailed and colourful style is right up my alley, and kept me well and truly hooked, even when the plotting or dialogue let it down a bit. The scores (although low) indicate a slight dip in quality for the remainder of the series. I really hope that's not the case, as I'm rather enjoying this. Here's hoping. 4.5/5
Very lowbrow to me. The plot seems like an excuse to show sexy women and gore, sometimes at the same time.
It starts kinda like a murder mystery, but resolves itself before the midpoint. Answers are spoon fed and new elements are added and dropped instantly. The women are very 2D, large breasted, using sex as a weapon type of deal which doesn’t help the case for the Male’s Gaze in comics.
The saving grace is the art. Truly great strips in this and the gore is outrageously creative and well-done, even if it’s heavy handed.
I’ll read the next issue only because I own it already. Otherwise I’d drop this series.

If you aren't expecting anything remotely high-brow, this is a fun little romp of sex, gore, and general werewolf depravity. It plays out like every stereotypical modern werewolf story - our protagonist is an American small-town alcoholic cop, for example - except the werewolves are a touch more...psychotic.
Not for kids. Graphic violence and sex. The Norse take on werewolves was new, but most women would hate these graphic novels as the females are subservient and love being so, including an enjoyment of being brutalized.
I wanted to like this book I am a fan of old school horror since birth and maybe there is a good book in there somewhere but I lack the patience to find it.
Primer comic del mes: Ferals, vol. 1 David Lapham & Gabriel Andrade Avatar Press, 2012
As a huge David Lapham fan, I was a bit let down by the first few issues of Ferals. The artwork is nothing short of violently beautiful but the story felt way too action orientated rather than story driven. Then it hits about issue 4 and the story starts taking on depth, adding more layers and becoming unpredictable. The thing I love about Lapham's work is he doesn't do traditional story twists. His work is closer to David Lynch's in that it is constantly adding new elements that seem to contradict or rapidly alter the rest of the story. Everything feels fluid and subject to change without notice.
I was reading some of the other reviews which complained that felt the plot felt disjointed, but having read a lot of Lapham's other series I know that it is deliberate and the story is bound to get even more hectic. The writing style might not suit everyone but I like it, it's different and keeps the reader off balance. And once again, the artwork is visceral and mindblowing.
This was pretty badass. Gory, sexy, and action packed. Some of the sequences were a bit hard for me to follow and I got a little lost, which is the main reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. But, to be fair, I'm a fricken space cadet and could possibly have just not been paying enough attention to take it all in. But the main character was very real to me and this take on the werewolf mythos is unique and much more "culty" and creepy than what we're used to. When a small town MN cop who's a little too popular with the ladies and a lot too popular with the drink hooks up with a masochistic, Norwegian bombshell, he finds himself caught up in much more than he signed up for. Looking forward to Book Two.
Disclaimer I am a big werewolf fan. They are my favorite monster. I didn't know what to expect from this book but it gets off to a really intriguing start and has great artwork. Occasionally it feels disjointed but overall I enjoyed it and will give vol 2 a try.
Brutal.
