Since the day I was born, my whole life has been decided for me. I’m nothing but a Saxon bargaining token, a political tool for my father. The Norsemen invaded our lands and burned villages to the ground, killing men, women and children alike. My hand in marriage was an exchange for peace. However, the seemingly impossible choice of who to wed is mine to make.
As my heart is torn between two men, an onset of attacks tear the village apart, causing discord and chaos amongst the ranks of those in power. To secure my safety amongst their people, I must make my choice. Will it be the charming, but dangerous warrior? Or the serious and loyal son of the Jarl? My life is turned upside down as my past and my future worlds collide.

MK Robert is a French-Canadian writer. She started writing as a teenager. Being a writer was always her dream and 15 years later she finally made that dream come true with her debut novel The Siren’s Seduction with Co-Writer Maggie Bonnet.
This was honestly an excellent read and I’m so mad at myself for reading it so quickly! It got it hooks in me so well that I even tried to read it during a root canal procedure 😂
I loved Elwyna. She started off seemingly submissive and weak and became a badass, curvy powerhouse. She could kick my ass and I’d be thankful for it tbh!! I’m so excited and terrified for what’s in store for our girl in the future.
Trygve and Thorsten were exceptional. Gorgeous, hunky Vikings who both encouraged Elwyna out of her “meek” shell - mentally, physically, and sexually. Trygve was cheeky, incredibly caring and surprisingly gentle as a friend and such an exquisite lover. Thorsten was strong and caring but restrained in public and wild as a lover and I’m so here for it. He was definitely a bit of a dick to start but we all love an alphahole right? I’d still say “please, Sir” if he asked me to! 🙈 Their dirty talk, both separately and together, was *chefs kiss* 🤌🏼
The spice, which was damn delicious, was sprinkled well throughout the book amongst the seriously excellent plot. As I mentioned earlier, the story got its hooks in me and quite early on. By chapter 3, I was annoyed that I had to put the book down to run errands because I needed the next line, next chapter. The main characters sucked me right in and made me want more and the villains made me want to cut bitches Viking-style. It was really hard to pin down where the next hit was going to come from, how much it was going to hurt, and who the real big bad guys were/will be. It seemed like they were coming from all sides and now that we’ve had some things come to light at the end of this book, I’m really intrigued to see how they all play in.
It ends on a cliffhanger but we do get a little preview from a new POV from book 2 and I have a feeling that book is going to hurt so good too. This truly was an excellent read!! Definitely read the triggers but I found it to be just the right amount of dark violence mixed with humour and spice and plenty of little Easter eggs to make you seriously wonder what will happen next.
5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Kindly received an ARC copy from the author but all thoughts and opinions are my own and freely given.
Here for the big ass men but not here for the fmc. Elwyna is just so… I have no words to describe her but I don’t like her. She got a message from Astrid saying to “combine” and Elwyna was like “what”? Meanwhile, I was screaming CHOOSE BOTH YOU IDIOT. She constantly goes off because she “can handler herself” but usually gets hurt or taken or some shit and I just laugh because you’d think that’d teach her something but no. She sits on top of her high horse (literally) looking down on their religion calling them heathens yet every time they have the discussion about how people practicing that religion encourage the worst of humanity she’s all like nah. Let’s not forget the author forgot what the gd fmc looks like! Elwyna described herself at the beginning as a girl with mousy brown hair and blue eyes. Then when Thor pictures her in the tub ;) he pictures a girl with auburn hair and green eyes and I was like WOAH who’s he talking about until he said he was picturing Elwyna. Also, after they got together and she chose both I kinda just stopped caring.

So 1st thing is read the trigger warnings on this book. (I got this as an ARC) The story was good and the characters were good. I am an avid smut reader and felt that the smut in this was forcing the plot to move forward to fast when not needed. It was good.
Let me preface this by saying that I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review and thats what I'm going to give you.
Elwyn. Elwyn, Elwyn, Elwyn... We start off the story following our main character, a sweet but timid, fearful, meek, little Saxon girl as she travels to the Norse where her father is arranging her future marriage to one of the Norse men so that by their marriage peace is ensured for her people. We quickly skip forward in time to meet her once more as a grown, albeit sheltered and naive, woman. I adored the growth of Elwyn as she found her place among the Norse. After deciding she had lived in fear and weakness long enough, having been severely abused by her father for her entire life up until leaving him and finding freedom with the vikings, she decides to pursue training as a shield maiden. Eleyn is frequently described as curvy with thick thighs and ample breasts and butt, but that doesn't mean she isn't strong and athletic. I'm not 100% sure if she's just curvy and thick or if she's outright mid/plus size, but she definitely is not your typical thin, tall, model-esque main character.
Elwyn is approached by many of the men in an effort to court her for lack of better words, trying to get her to choose them. Elwyn however is a lot more concerned with learning to fight and defend herself, growing into a strong and brave woman. None who approach her catch her interest...
Except.. Laughing, mischievous, trickster Trygve who makes me her smile and feel things she doesn't understand and his best friend, engaged son of the Jarl, serious and steady Thorsten. These two share everything. Mead, food, laughter, battle... And women. Elwyn has been so sheltered that up until the carriage ride from her Saxon home to her new home in the Norse village, she didnt even know what sex was. Coming across Trygve and Thorsten sharing a woman in the woods ignites a desire in her that cannot be quenched.
More important than her search for a husband is the search for who is amassing an army and using that army to slaughter the surrounding norse villages and the mystery of why. Even more mysterious than the random and devastating attacks is the vision she receives by the gods prophesying her future and the future of the pagans. Plot twists, mysteries, changing fates, all sort of tensions and drama abound.
Will they find out who is slaughtering her new people? Who will she choose to stand by her side in this life and in the next? Will she be strong enough to withstand what is to come? Can she decipher the prophesy of the gods in time? Only one way to find out...
So, obviously this is set in the time of the Vikings. This is a brutal time in the world with lots of wars. Which brings us to Elwyna, the daughter of a Saxon and bargained for peace.
Elwyna character absolutely changes and grows throughout the story and I loved every minute of it!
Now the male male main characters are totally different! Thorsten is the alphahole who has these jerk tendencies, but is definitely 100% a simp for Elwyna! Trygve is the funny, almost playboy (who definitely knows what he likes sexually!) and he is definitely head over heels for Elwyna as well!
This story gave me all the feels and I could not put it down! I’m so excited for more to come. I highly recommend if you are looking for an amazing story with action, drama, spice, and hot Viking men!
Absolutely love this book! The writing is fantastic especially with the mix of background and flashbacks. I would recommend this to everyone who loves a bit of spice and more of the Norse theme!
Vikings, war, and so much smut. This book had it all. Definitely recommend reading it. Bring on book 2. There is a cliff to fall off of that's for sure.
I really loved the idea of this book, but so many things seemed like they needed more details. Some awkward timing on certain scenes and it felt like the build up was missing. All the right ideas, beautiful premise, but I needed more. Also there were a lot of punctuation errors, gender usage errors, and even a few words used in the wrong places. I can forgive that most of the time but here it was started to bug me. I really wanted to love this book, but I couldn't finish.
The characters, the setting, the MMF buildup were all very good, and maybe this story could be for you, I still recommend trying. I hope you get what you need from it.
A brutal saga set in the Viking days but so full of great steamy scenes and a young girl adapting to a new way of life with gusto. Elwyna was brought up under the harsh hand of her father. She was not allowed to speak until told to, kept her eyes downcast, had to accept brutal beatings when her father was mad, and more. This is how the Saxons treated women. When she was a child her father took her with to a meeting with the Norsemen, she was to be given as a peace offering when she came of age. In return the Norsemen would leave the Saxons alone. Elwyna experienced what it was like to be free for the two weeks they were with the Norsemen, to be treated with respect as all women should. But, when they got home, her father beat her so severely, she wished to die. At the age of 18, she was sent to the Norseman to chose her husband. Saxons didn't allow their women to chose. So who really are the heathens? She starts learning how to fight and protect herself by training as a shield maiden. Who will she choose for her husband: serious Thorsen or playful Trygve or both? They are best friends and share everything- food, fighting in battle, women, and themselves. And what about the woman Thorsten is bound to? Who is attacking the nearby villages? What about the prophecy? So much is going on in this book. Warning: there is a cliffhanger. Our author is an amazing world and character builder. Great descriptions, obvious research of Norsemen and Saxons that is woven into her story and very HOT scenes that curl your toes. Not my normal genre to read but this was a great intro to Vikings and I am looking forward to the next book.
Glad there was a pronunciation guide in the beginning to help with all the names. I took a picture of it and referred to some that I wasn't able to memorize so I could pronounce the names later when I stumble on them.
This had a very good balance of plot and heat. I loved that not everything worked out for our heroine and her harem so it was more realistic and more immersive of the time period and plot. Even though there were signs of insta-love/insta-lust, it still took a while for the relationship to form, I liked the slow to medium burn and that there was courting and some back-and-forth before they all got together. The MM scenes were also super hot and I'm glad those weren't fade-to-black but explicitly written too.
For now, the harem is 2 men, but it looks like there may be a 3rd being added with the hints of the ending and cliffhanger. Cannot wait for the second book to come out! This was a great historical read.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review. All opinions are my own and not influenced by the author.
The Shield and Axe is the first book in The Vikings Saga by M.K. Robert, and it does not disappoint. If you're a fan of Vikings and Norse mythology, as well as spicy romance, you'll want to check out this series.
Elwyna is promised to the Vikings at a young age, set up by her father as a way to keep the peace between their people. When she becomes of age and moves into the Viking settlement with her lady's maid, Cwen, she learns that the lives of the Norsemen are vastly different than the life she had been living. She had been made to believe that women were supposed to be submissive creatures, but with the help of the Norsemen and women she's living with, she learns that she is more than that.
Trygve, aka my newest book boyfriend, and Thorsen, help to empower Elwyna, in more ways than one....and it gets hot along the way. The character development in Elwyna throughout the book was a joy to read. It shows that despite how you grow up, you can always change your future.
There were so many twists and turns, as well as a cliffhanger that left me with so many questions! I'm hooked and can't wait to see what happens next!
3.5⭐️ I found this series on a friend's wishlist and both were gifted to me and I finally started it. I love norse/pagan storylines so of course this would be right up my alley. It is very much NSFW...at all..very graphic with the scenes both in the spice and in the gore. Um hello it's vikings/saxons...it gave me God of War vibes with the Oracle making you see thing and having visions, rituals, some religious undertones but it's not the basis of the story. There's murder, mayhem, war, paganism, M/F/M, M/M/F, and F/M spicy scenes, and a whole lot more going on you'll just have to read it to find out more. The plot was good and the characters were all likeable and well developed...and of course it left us on a cliffhanger so I will definitely be reading the next book soon. Yeah if you enjoy a good story with spice I would this book.
I can’t say enough about this book. My absolute favorite part of it though is the relatable battle of being raised Christian and questioning everything you were taught. Probably one of the most relatable FMC I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about.
Absolutely love her guys, you’ve got the strict, serious, duty bound type and then the fun, sweet, and flirty type. The way they mesh and help El grow is sooo heartwarming.
But this isn’t going to be a sweet and fluffy read. It’s full of action and violence. A lot of fantastic spice. And a FMC who works hard to build herself from weak to a warrior.
I love the Norse pagan religious elements in this story!
Ends on one heck of a cliffhanger, you’ve been warn… but it’s well worth it and I can’t wait for book two!
5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/5🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I received an ARC of this book and was not disappointed at all in it. M.K really brought the heat/spice into this book! 🥵 Even though are FMC is a virgin, we still got plenty of spicy scenes. I really enjoyed seeing the FMC grow into a stronger woman and not believe what her father taught her as growing up. Also seeing the two main male characters encourage her to become stronger was amazing! Also seeing the FMC struggle with her religion was something I could relate to and thought it was beautifully written in this book. This story is a historical Viking book but has all the juicy/spicy scenes we love. Also that cliffhanger was rough!!! Looking forward to seeing where the next book goes! ❤️
Elwyna is a pawn in the Saxon empire, having to wed someone in order to being peace. While the choice is hers to make, she's torn between two love interests. Attacks on her village are forcing her to make a decision, but can she truly choose?
This book is HOT! I loved every second of this book and how not only steamy it was, but how interesting the plot was. I love vikings, and with the addition of some adult fun, this was right up my alley.
Thorsten and Trygve are two very different men that hold Elwyna's heart. The each have their own unique qualities, one being an alphahole but sweet for Elwyna and one being the fun, playboyish type. I loved the both of them and wouldn't be able to choose on my own either!
Holy moly, this book was hot, I am going to need a cold shower right now. MK Robert has done an amazing job with this MMF Viking era romance. Elwyna has been promised to be married off to a Norsemen in order to broker peace between them & her people, the Saxons. It might appear that she is being sold off to bring peace, but she is actually receiving a rare gift for a Saxon woman, the ability to choose and the freedom that comes with it. The Northmen may be heathens, but things are not very rosy with the Saxons either.
I love both of her love interest Trygve & Thorsten. They both bring out a different side of Elwyna, helping her to grow into the woman she is becoming.
I could not put this book down & I really need answers after that ending. And that teaser for book 2! Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie! I cant wait to see where this story goes next!
I got an advanced ARC ebook of this for an honest review. I've honestly never really been into books about the Norse God's or that type of mythology, BUT when I read what it was about and the plot, I just had to pick it up, so I did. I also finished it in a day. Sad. Because this book was amazing, I wish I had of taken my time and read it over multiple days so I could just let it settle in my brain. Sadly I didn't but there is always book 2. I rated it a 4 only because the a few chapters had repeate paragraphs, but that's what editing is for so I'm sure that will be fixed. The storyline was very well done, the character building was just *chefs kiss*. World building was also very good, I'm a firm believer in rereading books and this is definitely one I'd reread once they are all out. All in all it was a very well written book!
BE WARNED. CLIFFHANGER. LITERALLY. BOOK 2 COMES SOON (end of May 2023)
Trigger Warnings: Serial Assault Domestic Violence Gore (Beheadings/Blood Eagles/War etc)
Trope: Historical Romance MF / MMF / MM
Elwyna has been traded to a nearby Viking settlement by her father to be wed, in exchange for peace. The Jarl had decreed that Elwyna must return when she turns 18 and choose a husband.
But while Elwyna gets to understand her new life with the vikings and understand what it is to be a shieldmaiden, their settlement is continuously hit by mercenaries.
They must get to the bottom of it to save her new home.
I loved this book, it was so interesting and entertaining , I had the hardest time at night stopping at each night . It was crazy to me how different the people are from her group or treating women like crap and not respected to Being loved and worshipped by sexy men with the initial T :-) I loved her relationship with her maid they were funny to watch how she wanted to explore and learn and the maid was like ummm no that’s not proper . I loved , loved her friendships she grew and tried to teach her everything . From sex to men to everything else
I loved loved this book. I loved this author as well and really enjoy her books This is a must read! The SPICY AND SEXY parts are off the charts good. Sooo goood
I absolutely loved this book. I have been struggling a bit in my personal life and this was a great escape for a bit. It was a little confusing at first because of the different vocabulary but she puts the list of words with their meanings at the beginning of the book. Once I got all the terms down which didn't taken long, I couldn't put it down until it was finished. I've also never read Norse books but I'm going to from now on thanks to this book. If you're ok with all the trigger warnings then I definitely recommend this book.
Let me just start by saying, I LOVED this book!! It was so darn good, with fantastic world building and superb character development. Elwyna begins as a submissive, meek, dutiful Christian girl but completely transforms and grows into a strong , fiery, fierce shield maiden. And don't get me started on Trygve and Thorsten, holy crap are they sexy! Super sexy spicy scenes all mixed in an absolutely phenomenal plot. This book has it all! I honestly could not put it down and was on the the edge of my seat ( with so much darn anxiety ) at the end of the book. I CANNOT wait for the next book, I definitely need more, more, more!!
Elwyna is a young Saxton women whose father decided to marry her off to a Viking in hopes that the joining of the two towns would stop the Viking's from invading the Saxton town. Elwyna meets Thorsten and Trygve and is attracted to them, but the way she was raised makes her think that is very sinful. She starts training as a shield maiden to earn her place in Viking society and does very well. The Vikings have been under assault from the Saxtons and they are trying to find who is behind it so that they can stop them. When Elwyna receives word that her father has died and when she arrives home she uncovers secrets that will change her life. Great story full of action and adventure.
I knew MK was an amazing author having read her cowrite but this book was everything and more. Who knew Vikings and the way they pronounce words could be so sexy. I couldn't put this book down it just flowed so well and drew me right in. I loved Elwyna and how she stood up for herself. Trygve and Thorsten were just so damn sexy. It's even sexier when they bring her out of her shell and encourage her to be who she is meant to be. The steam is off the charts. When can I have Book 2?
Attention Everyone!!!! If you loved the show The Last Kingdom or Vikings you need to read this asap! Especially if you are like me and fantasized about the viking men in the shows. This book had great sexy scenes as well as the brutal fighting scenes. I liked how in the beginning of the book there is a list of pronunciations for those unfamiliar. It is a why choose, with mm and you should also read the TW before reading. It ends on a cliffhanger and I can't wait for book 2. Great read!
I am a fan of historical fiction books but I have yet to find a Viking one that I loved. This was absolutely blew my mind. This was so good and so hooot. The plot and storyline were so amazing. The characters were all well written and built so great.
This book has MF, MMF, MFM scenes so if it isn't your thing then go on somewhere else. MK blew this out the water and I am so glad I read it!
Outstanding! From the first page I was sucked into Elwyna's world and never wanted to leave. The character development and poetic description of this saga made it near impossible to put down. It was an emotional ride from start to finish, like being wrapped in your favorite snuggly blanket with a hot cup of tea...while sitting on a roller coaster. I already want to re read it while I painstakingly wait for the second book.
The Shield and Axe was wonderfully written with twists and turns that had me unable to put it down. I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book. Definitely recommend giving this book a read.
What a fantastic story full of steamy scenes, love and tenderness and hero’s to die for. Can’t wait to read the next book in the story. A very talented author indeed. If you don’t like violence etc., then this book might not be for you!
