Katie Holmes, aged 17, lives with her adoptive mother, the housekeeper of a fabulous house in Camps Bay belonging to the gorgeous hunk Finn O’Reilly. Finn has the ability to stop time, to move into what is called “untime”. Katie can’t stop time but, uniquely, can function in “untime” and works as a partner, a sidekick, to Finn.
I didn't really enjoy this type of book, because I myself are not into reading about a young girls life decisions and thoughts. I love reading fantasy but I do recommend this book to a action reader. I tried but I just don't see myself reading these type of books.
This is a really excellent young adult novel. There are a number of fairly mediocre ones out there but this one stands out. It is firmly set in Cape Town with plenty of local references, incorporating detective/mystery theme with elements of fantasy. Lots of quirky, sarcastic, and witty humour. Definitely worth reading or buying for a teenage reader. This book won the Sanlam Gold Prize for youth literature in 2009 - and the award was well-deserved, I think.
Side Kick was a very good book. I did not want to put it down as it had my attention the whole time. The ending was a bit disappointing but the book as a whole was very good. I enjoyed the little footnotes the writer gave as it felt like I was at a personal level with the main character.
