All Sophie Creedon has ever wanted is a normal life – but normal life doesn’t seem to want Sophie. Strikingly pretty, a top student, with unique musical talent, the London schoolgirl has always stood out from the crowd. But it’s the Revenants that truly set her apart: creatures not quite living, not quite dead, and visible only to Sophie. Hard as she tries to ignore them, her haunting has cost her friends, opportunities, even her parents’ trust.

In a last-ditch effort to free herself of it, she foregoes a university place in favour of a waitressing job in the tiny village of Ardnasheen, on Scotland’s wild northwest coast. Though at first Ardnasheen seems to offer exactly the refuge Sophie has been looking for, she quickly realizes that it harbors dark secrets of its own. Barely a week into her new life, she finds herself caught up in a bitter rivalry between Sam and Lucas, two young landowners. One is charming, the other brooding, and both irresistibly compelling. But the roots of their hostility run deep into a mysterious past that seems to involve Sophie. As they vie for her attention, she is forced to choose which one to trust.

Sophie is about to discover the love of her life – and a secret to die for.

Mixed feelings. I can enjoy a good paranormal story, but at times this felt like nothing new. Some readers thought of the Fallen-series, me too. It was somewhat enjoyable but it also felt unrealistic. I found it very hard to accept the fact that Sophie got used to her new role so fast and that it was al very normal what she felt she had to do. I guess that's the power of love or something...

But, since I have the second book on my shelf I will continue the series, just curious to find out what happens next. The epilogue definitely made me curious!

I liked this story and it had an interesting twist on the angel stories.
The beginning made me really think of fallen by Lauren Kate but it went in a different direction.

I did enjoy the story but I'll probably not pick up the sequel

Bound by Sarah Bryant is a wonderful book. Narrated by a young woman called Sophie, she begins her story on a ferry boat to the tiny village of Ardnasheen, on Scotland's wild northwest coast . While in the seemingly quiet town Sophie makes some life changing discoveries such as why she can see Revenants and why she has the sight for the Síth. This fantasy novel features ancient lore about the fairies that roam the Scottish lands from murderous water horses to wild cats. However Bryant also uses the Book of Enoch and legends to include in her story angels and what happens when they fall making it one of the most unique stories that I’ve read in the past few years. It really captures not only the reader’s imagination but interest, because of the researched and collected knowledge on the topic. Sophie must face the fact that she isn’t who she thought she was. She begins to uncover the dark secrets about her past and why her love for Lucas has not only thrown off the balance but might be worth dying for.

Full of enjoyable characters and written with immense skill this book is really just amazing! I loved it and it has easily catapulted Bryant to my list of top authors. I would suggest investing in the sequel Riven though because once you’ve entered this fantasy you won’t be able to leave.

I liked the atmosphere of this book. Sophie was better as a protagonist than I expected. The development of the book felt slow for me, but It got better on the....third part of the book.
I kept reading for the guilt of dropping the book and a bit of curiosity of the final explanation...But I think I missed some things. I didn't understand the core of the plot the first time... It made me impatient to not being able to see the whole picture of what was happening. I don't know If I'll search the sequel. Maybe if I stumble upon it.

Am in a reading slump but forced myself to read it and let me tell you! My interests was immediately piqued when Sophie first met Lucas here (I'm a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope pls spare me) and even though this is clearly NOT that trope, the plot revolving around angel/fallen angels mythology has certainly kept me until the end of the book! A good read, but was not expecting there to have a sequel

3.5*.

This was a neat twist on the standard Fallen Angel story, and full of pretty cool ideas re:mythology and theology. Was it great? no, in my opinion. But it was pretty good, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

I'm not sure why, but it didn't really 'click' that Bound was an angel story. I mean, yes, I'm aware of the angel statue on the cover and the big writing in capital letters on the top that may as well say 'THIS IS AN ANGEL BOOK.' But it still didn't seem to permeate, so... shut up! I just don't think the above summary does this book any justice - it makes it sound like some generic paranormal YA story, possibly complete with melodramatic angst and Sneaky Vampires.

Thankfully it's nothing like that - instead it's a dark tale of a young girl slowly realising that she isn't who she always thought she was. When she accepts a waitressing job in Scotland to escape her divorcing parents, she discovers a little village where the inhabitants introduce her to the history that didn't make it into the books.

I'm not sure whether it's the story or the atmosphere that really make Bound what it is, as both are exceptional. Moronically, as I mentioned above, I didn't expect this book to be as angel-centered as it was. I've recently had a less-than-perfect experience with angels (Fury) so I wasn't sure what to expect with regard to quality. Thankfully, it's got a great plot, complete with twists, revelations and action. Sarah Bryant has taken the angel mythology and given it a whole new meaning.

As for the atmosphere, it draws you in from the start. In first scene, Sophie visits the pub where she's to work, and I swear it feels as real as the room I'm in now. The homely cheerfulness seems to completely envelop the reader and it's almost possible to hear the chatter and bustle of the patrons. From dark alleys to mysterious towers, the scene always seems to jump off the page.

Sophie herself is... acceptable, as a protagonist. While not particularly needy, selfish or any of the remaining plethora of irritating traits that usually accompany female main characters in YA novels, she's just a little too accepting. I know she grew up seeing things that nobody else could, but it's a fair cry from the revelations she eventually comes to and nobody in their right mind would accept them as easily as she does. I can't say it affected my enjoyment to a huge extent though, to be fair - more of a minor niggle.

The ending felt a little rushed, despite the intense build-up. The atmosphere increases and increases until there's a sudden, final scene... and I just think the situation could have been resolved in a better way. And that's as uncryptic as I can get without being spoilery, folks! It also never really explains the significance behind Sophie turning 18 - it just kind of seemed like a twee, unnecessary plot device.

Long story short, Bound isn't without its faults but I loved it regardless. It's original, well-written, clever and I really, really want to read the sequel. Thankfully we don't have long to wait. The release date for Riven is set for Summer 2012 and for me, it can't come soon enough! I'm desperate to know what happens to Sophie after that enticing epilogue.

When I first got an email off Sarah asking to review her book I will admit that I had never heard of her.  But after reading the synopsis of Bound I was very intrigued and really wanted to find out what it was all about.
Sophie Creedon, leaves her home of London for Ardnasheen, Scotland and starts new job a barmaid in pub run by Rhadhri.  She quickly becomes friends with Ailsa, who not only is the other barmaid, but also stays in Madainneag with Sophie.  However strange occurrences start to happen, and the ever mysterious Sam and Lucas make appearances at convenient time to save Sophie.  As the plot thickens we eventually learn more about Sophie and her 'gifts' and find out the true reason for Sam and Lucas being in the right place at the right time.

Bound took me a while to get through, partly because it is a big read, but also because I wanted to make sure I had not missed out on any hints and clues that were dangled in front of me like a carrot on a stick.  I had my suspicions about who/what Sam and Lucas were but I could never quite put my finger on it and I desperately wanted to find out for myself rather than have it revealed through the book.  I am glad to say my suspicions were on the right lines, but not exactly correct.

Bound has some basis on angelology and old myths and legends, which kept it interesting, but also didn't take the focus away from the characters.  It felt like all the pieces tied together nicely and I learnt a few facts along with Sophie.  The creatures that were involved with the storyline even had me fooled at one point or another and was happily surprised to find them in this story.  The last few chapters had me sitting on the edge of my seat and I could not turn the pages fast enough to find out what woud happen next and find out what choice Sophie makes.
The village of Ardnasheen sounds like an idyllic place, and if all the mythical creatures were taken out of it would be a great place to go and relax in.  Each character in the book has his or her own personality and manages to make themselves be heard without being overpowering.  I fell in love with Ailsa immediately, and really liked how welcoming and friendly she was to Sophie, and even after hearing the strange things Sophie tells her is still there for her, even at the very end of the book.  Sophie is likeable, and even though she sees things others don't I think she is a well balanced character, perfectly opposite to Ailsa but perfect for her choice of boyfriend.

Sophie has drawn me into her world with her writing and I am eagerly waiting to find out what happens next.

Okay, I'm going to start out by saying that I LOVED this book, it was fantastic and I couldn't put it down, like literally in was two hundred pages in when I had to go to college and I spent the two hours that I was in class thinking about where I'd left off and then I was straight back to it when I got home. As soon as the book was finished I immediately sent an email to my contact at the publishers demanding a copy of the sequel when it becomes available...

Yeah, I loved this book.

But it didn't start that way for me, for the first couple of chapters I didn't think that the book was something that I was going to enjoy because it just didn't seem to be gripping me in, I think maybe that is because the first couple of chapters are jam packed with description but not much dialogue, but soon I began to get gripped as the characters were introduced and we start to wonder exactly why Sophie has moved so far away. What kept me reading through that slow time was the setting, I love out there settings and a little island off the Scottish coast was so amazing to read about, and the weather seriously set the tone for the book!

It took me a lot longer to get to grips with Sophie's character, I was wary because she is described as super beautiful, super intelligent and can even play the harp but later I realised how all of this ties in with who she is (I'm trying to not put spoilers in this review, so I'm being vague), and I also got a bit annoyed about how cynical she is about the place where she has moved because she chose to go there, couldn't she have like Googled the place or something? In the end though, I started to like her and by the end I was so attached to her character that i was almost crying... so my feelings managed to turn three sixty!

I loved the romance aspect, it went the opposite way to how I thought it was going to go at the start, the boy that I thought was the good boy wasn't and the one that I thought was the bad guy turned out to be the swoonworthy good boy, the romance didn't develop too slowly but it also avoided being instant and you readers know that if I despise anything it's insta-love.

The storyline was amazing, I was so wondering where it was going in the beginning but by the middle you think you know exactly what's going to happen but it doesn't! There are so many twists and turns in this book but I loved where the storyline went, the ending left me speechless and now I am dying for Riven, the next in the series.

Overall, I think I can sum it up by saying that this book literally left me on the edge of my seat and absolutely speechless, because of a bit of a slow start and a problem getting to grips with the main character I can't say that this book was full grade, but it's definitely nearly there.

Overall Rating: A-

Very occasionally you come across a book which you know almost nothing about but which ends up amazing and surprising you with a story which you fall in love with. 'Bound' by Sarah Bryant is one of those books. I picked it up to read one evening and curled up in bed planning to just read a couple of chapters. Those couple of chapters turned into a few more and then a few more and I found that I couldn't actually go to sleep until I'd found out how the plot was going to unfold and what was going to be the fate of all the characters. Needless to say I didn't get much sleep at all that night!

The story is set in Scotland, in a small village called Ardnasheen. Situated in the middle of nowhere with a very small population who all know each other, the atmospheric setting nicely fitted with the feeling of isolation that the protagonist Sophie experiences when she first arrives. The weather is miserable and unwelcoming but Sophie is running away from something that scares her more than being on her own in a strange place.

She's drawn towards the local Laird, Lucas Belial, who we get to hear about before being introduced to him. There's a connection between them which is unexplained at first but gradually revealed over the course of the book. I loved Lucas who is gorgeous and passionate, dark and mysterious and I really liked the theme of forbidden love which is woven into the plot. The romance in the novel came across as genuine and real and made me believe and hope for the happiness of the characters. There's a mini love triangle between Sophie, Lucas and another local resident, Sam Eblis, but there was no doubt in my mind who she should pick.

Angels, revenants, demons and faeries - this book has them all and Bryant does a brilliant job of combining them all into a story which utterly captivated me. There are so many interesting and surprising revelations that 'Bound' is a genuine page-turner.

This is Sarah Bryant's fifth book (I've actually read a couple of her adult novels) but is the first which she's written for a young-adult audience. Angel lovers will adore this story of good and evil and forbidden love and will be gripped by the intricate plot, with layer upon layer of the story unravelling with plenty of exciting twists and turns. There are still lots of questions which remain unanswered at the end - one of the reasons why I'm absolutely desperate to read the sequel 'Riven' which luckily is due to be published summer 2012.

REVIEW ON MY BLOG: http://toreadornotbyerica.blogspot.be...
4.5 mysterious stars!

I'd really like to point out how underrated this book is and how much I want it to change! This book was such a great one to read and I absolutely devoured it. At the start we're already confronted with the mystery around the main character and what she's exactly seeing. The fact that both reader and character didn't know what these creatures actually were made it a very pleasant read, because we get the possibility think for ourselves and come up with theories and rule them out along the way. Also the townspeople are a great asset to the book as they are also very strange and add to the mystery alongside the weird dreams Sophie has been having. The book really is one big mystery where everyone is bound to keep silent and this makes the reader frustrated as well as eager to find out what everything is about. When we finally realize what's going on and who we're dealing with, we're in for such a surprise and close to the ending that will leave you shivering in disbelieve!

I found this book enjoyable and would say it probably fits a bit YA as it reminds me of a cross between Lauren Kate's Fallen and Cassandra Clare's The Mortal instruments. I found the authors style of writing easy to get into and I could warm to the lead character. I will say though parts became a little predicable on who the villain of the peace was (but very few books seem to fool me on this); I'm thoroughly looking forward to reading the sequel.

I confess, this was one of those books you buy, put on your shelf then forget about as you get pulled into all the hyped books. And for this I was a total idiot.

This book was like Fallen and then some. There was so much intrigue, once I got going I was hooked, and we're talking almost missing my bus stop, dropping everything until I was finished intrigue. I fell completely in love with the characters and cannot wait to see what happens next.
