As a lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County, I was thrilled to find this novel hiding in the stacks of the Tuscarawas County Public Library Main Branch amongst all the big names of contemporary fiction.

I was quickly pulled into the lives of these Christians who walked the same fields and trails I have along the Tuscarawas River. Having visited Schoenbrunn and the massacre site in Gnadenhutten many times, the devastating action of the page came to life, while I hoped for an ending other than the one I knew.

Would I rate it 5 stars as a piece of literature if I didn’t live here? Maybe not, but I truly appreciate the historical accuracy of the novel and the creation of a believable fictional character who whose presence makessense at all the major historical events covered in the novel.
