Charles Spurgeon, the great Baptist preacher of nineteenth-century London, is remembered today as the prince of preachers. However, the strength of Spurgeon s ministry went far beyond simple rhetorical skill. With a foundational commitment to the Bible, Spurgeon fearlessly taught the doctrines of grace and tirelessly held forth the free offer of salvation in Jesus Christ. In short, he was a firm believer in the truth of the gospel and the power of the gospel to save.
Dr. Steven J. Lawson is the Senior Pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama, having served as a pastor in Arkansas and Alabama for the past twenty-nine years. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University (B.B.A.), Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.), and Reformed Theological Seminary (D. Min.)
This tiny book looks short enough, but packs a powerful dose of encouragement from the Gospel focused life of Charles Spurgeon. It's a fantastic little quick read in which Steve Lawson stands beside you, puts one arm around your shoulder, and uses the other to point back in history at highlights in the life and ministry of Charles Spurgeon.
For me, this accomplished three things. First, I got to meet Spurgeon. As someone who has not previously had the opportunity to study the life and ministry of Spurgeon as much as I might have liked to, I could only claim friendship with him through a partial ignorance in bits of quotes and phrases heard and read in various sermons, books, articles, and blog posts. I had read "Lectures to My Students," but this gives you little insight into Spurgeon's actual life. This little book introduced me to a man who I have grown to love and refer to as "Chuck." OK, maybe that's a bit far.
Second, it confirmed my own doctrinal convictions and allowed me to see how Spurgeon had come to many of the same conclusions in his study of Scripture. I've always believed myself to be standing in the same historic line as Spurgeon, but had not ever had opportunity to fully trace it out to its proofs. Here, Lawson gives quote after quote after quote, leaning into the ministry of Spurgeon to show his doctrinal clarity on the biblical gospel. This left me convinced, and thus encouraged, that I am standing in a long line of godly men, with Spurgeon as a spiritual forefather before me, and preaching the same truths from the same scripture the he once did.
Finally, this book was also a great challenge to me, especially because of the evangelistic fervor of Spurgeon. I was convicted that in striving for doctrinal clarity on the gospel of grace, I have all too often failed to live evangelistically, serve evangelistically, and preach evangelistically. This was a great challenge to my sinful heart to live out the role of evangelist. We must plead with the unbelievers God puts in our lives to "be reconciled to God."
We've all heard about Spurgeon. We've all heard him quoted. If you've ever wondered about Charles Spurgeon, but never had the opportunity to get to know him very well, this is a small commitment book that will give you a big perspective into his life, his ministry, his preaching, and his heart. It's short, sweet, and to the point, but is LOADED with great nuggets of wisdom and biblical insights from the "prince of preachers." I would recommend this book to any Christian, but especially as a quick devotional read because of it's small size.
a wonderful tribute not to just spurgeon or his life, but to his love for the Lord, His Word, and His Gospel. he studied the Word diligently and shared it boldly
The life and ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon should be an encouragement to every minister, but even more so for Baptist ministers who believe in the complete Sovereignty of God.
This book gives a short biography of Spurgeon’s life, and then focuses on the convictions that shaped this bold preacher. Charles Spurgeon is worth studying due to his role in church history. As the Pastor of New Park Street and later the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Spurgeon heralded the Gospel to thousands in Victorian England.
This book is a quick read. 6 shorts chapters form this book including 1) Spurgeon’s Life and Legacy. 2) Unshakeable Foundations. 3) Sovereign Grace. 4) Evangelistic Fervor. 5) The Heart of the Gospel. 6) Spirit-Empowered Witness.
If you are interested in learning more about this Preacher this book is a great place to start.

I believe this was a free audiobook awhile back on Christian Audio, so I've been meaning to give it a listen. This is a great introduction to Spurgeon's preaching ministry, with a particular focus on his calvinistic preaching. It is there, however, that I think Lawson falls short. I remember little to nothing at all said about Spurgeon's confessional beliefs, which were a key part of his ministry. That being said, the last two chapters were very edifying as Lawson presented the Prince of Preachers' balanced devotion to God's sovereignty in calling men from death to life through the proclamation of the gospel.
Interesting little book, but not what I was expecting. There was only one biographical chapter and the rest of the book focused on his theology and preaching ministry. To be fair, the subtitle is "The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon"- so I suppose I should have expected it. At least there were plenty of good quotes from Spurgeon himself to highlight and ruminate on! It's a good resource if you need inspiration for teaching the full gospel of God; but if you're wanting more of an actual biography, probably look elsewhere.
This series of short biographies take a broad look at a specific theologian or evangelist and give an introductory level of their life and ministry. They are well suited to inspire the reader to find more about that theologian and read more deeply about him. That is certainly the case with this book on Spurgeon. His eloquence and impassioned preaching make me excited to serve the Lord in the church and learn from his example.
A great, albeit short, spotlight on the life and vision of Charles Spurgeon. In particular, Lawson highlighted the value and focus that Charles Spurgeon put upon the doctrines of Grace as well as on the gospel in and through his ministry. To read how Spurgeon married these two perspectives in his teaching and ministry was both helpful and inspirational, leading readers to take to the scriptures and read for themselves the glorious truths that Spurgeon preached so joyfully to the masses.
Spurgeon is one of my heroes of the faith. And this book did him justice. Lawson must have read every sermon by Spurgeon because there were hundreds of quotes. But what I really appreciated about this book was how it delved into Spurgeon’s personality and how it shaped his ministry. Great book
If you are a pastor or even a disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ, Dr. Lawson’s book on the Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon is a MUST read!
Dr. Lawson begins with showing his reader highlights from Spurgeon’s life and legacy.
Next he gets right into the heart of the life and shows us how Spurgeon ticks for His Lord.
This book is packed with quotes from Spurgeon that light any Christ -loving heart on fire with a passion to tell others about the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
His first sermon, preached at the young age of 26, was based on the text Acts 5:42: “And every day in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”
“Preach Christ, that is the magnet; He will draw His own time Himself.”
“A sermon without Christ is a horrible thing.”
“All other topics in the holy Scripture are important, and none of them are to be cast into the shade. But the death of the Son of God is the central sun of all these minor luminaries.”
“A man who is really saved by grace does not need to be told that he is under solemn obligations to serve Christ. The new life within him tell him that.”
“Make Christ the diamond setting of every sermon.”
I actually read the book out loud to my bed-ridden bride who is presently hospitalized. She was so encouraged with these precious words of Charles Spurgeon.
I really enjoy reading about Spurgeon. I think I will select another book from this series. I learned many things about his views. Some I myself believe.
For pastors, especially. Encouraged to preach more faithfully, entreat sinners more urgently, reason with unbelievers more passionately, lift Christ more supremely, and rest more happily in the sovereignty of God in salvation.
A brief, yet excellent biography of the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon. The book begins with a brief biographical sketch of his life, and then Lawson goes into a detailed description of Spurgeon's preaching ministry. In the description of Spurgeon's preaching ministry, Lawson touches upon his convictions regarding the Scriptures and the Doctrines of Grace. He talks about Spurgeon's passion for evangelism, the importance of preaching being Christ-centered, and the necessity of the Spirits' empowerment in preaching. A great book if you want to learn a bit more about Spurgeon, excellent book on arguably one of the best preachers.
Powerful biography. The author takes a look at Spurgeon's theology and how his theology impacted his ministry. Spurgeon believed strongly in the doctrines of grace (Calvinism) and that belief fueled his evangelistic zeal. Spurgeon's laser focus on Christ and the Gospel was inspiring and very convicting. Well written, short, and personally edifying. Excellent!
This book is part of a series of books by Ligonier Ministries called “A Long Line of Godly Men Profile.” I’ve enjoyed other books in this series and this one also live up to my expectation. The author Steve Lawson himself is an excellent Reformed preacher which makes the book insightful since this is a biography of a preacher by a preacher. In the beginning of the book Lawson made an interesting point of the line of godly men in the Reformed tradition: “If John Calvin was the greatest theologian of the church, Jonathan Edwards the greatest philosopher, and George Whitefield the greatest evangelist, Spurgeon surely ranks as its greatest preacher” (1). Spurgeon is often called today “the Prince of Preachers,” who faithfully preached the Gospel with much power of the Holy Spirit for nearly four decades. This biography is not just about time and dates in Spurgeon’s life but a biography of his theology. After the first chapter on Spurgeon’s life and legacy, the rest of the chapters was on how his theology drove Spurgeon’s ministry. I especially appreciated the chapter on Sovereign grace in Spurgeon’s preaching and also the chapter on Spurgeon’s evangelistic fervor. I learned several things from the book about Spurgeon’s life that I did not know previously. For instance, I did not know Spurgeon did not have any formal theological training, having not attended any seminary or degrees yet he was quite theologically astute. Before reading the book I knew Spurgeon was a ferocious reader and I now further appreciate Spurgeon’s tenacity in self-education! I saw as application for preachers today is to continuously grow in one’s theology and not just resort to thinking one need not grow just because of one’s “success” in ministry or because of a theological degree one has attained in the past. I’ve also learned that Spurgeon founded the Pastor’s College at the age of twenty two, which is all the more remarkable given his lack of formal theological education. The book also mentioned how for the first fifteen years of the school Spurgeon himself covered the cost of the school by the sales of his weekly sermon. There is something encouraging to see a man who is so committed to training up godly and biblical pastors that he puts his own money and time into it. I was also much encouraged by Spurgeon’s example when I learned how often Spurgeon preached during the week. Lawson stated in the book that Spurgeon preached as much as ten times during the week. My favorite quote from Spurgeon in the book is the following: “We find ourselves able to preach ten or twelve times a week, and we find we are the stronger for it…‘Oh,’ said one of the members, ‘our minister will kill himself.’…That is the kind of work that will kill no man. It is preaching to sleepy congregations that kill good ministers” (14). I recommend this book for all Christians, given how Spurgeon is so widely read still today. I especially recommend this book for Pastors to be rekindled as a preacher to have a Gospel focus like Spurgeon. Sometimes historical theology can be quite edifying when we want examples of godly men and virtues of guys who are closer to us than those who are far removed from our time. The author did a good job balancing honoring Spurgeon while not idolizing him, and Lawson is able to do this in the book by looking at Spurgeon’s theology, which points us towards Jesus, the Gospel and the Bible.
This book was signed and sent directly from Pastor Steve Lawson after I drove him to a UCLA football game. I asked him for recommendations on Christian biographies on Christian men. I would think they would be the ones I would recommend. Have you read any of those?" To which I replied, "No."
This book was pretty informative, but...to be quite honest, I can probably guess there is a better biography out there, especially on such a prolific Christian like Spurgeon. This is all subjective, however, so if you're looking for a Spurgeon biography, this is the only one I've read so...I'd still recommend this one.
P.S. Pastor Steve Lawson, if you ever read this, please forgive me. And you still need to go to Six Flags with me.
This is a short, but powerful, examination of the preaching ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Lawson gives us an excellent introduction to the ministry of the "Prince of Preachers". He leaves us wanting more.
This is a book I will read again! Charles Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers, had bold, insightful sermons with accompanying scripture. I so enjoyed reading about his life, his sermons and his quotes! His wisdom continues! I highly recommend this book!
Outstanding account of spurgeons gospel preaching. The world needs more spurgeons, men who love truth and have a heart for lost souls. All glory to God.
Certainly this is the best of the "Long Line of Godly Men" series. It just doesn't get any better than a high-altitude look at the life, ministry, and gospel focus of Spurgeon.
And high-altitude is definitely where this book series operates, which is perfect for those who would prefer a quick summary of some of the greats like Spurgeon without the heavy reading to go along with it. These books serve as gateway drugs to the spiritual red woods of the faith.
Favorite Spurgeon Quotes: "The words of Scripture thrill my soul as nothing else ever can. They bear me aloft or dash me down. They tear me in pieces or build me up. The words of God have more power over me than ever David's fingers had over his harp strings ... I would rather speak five words out of this book than 50,000 words of the philosophers. If we want revivals, we must revive our reverence for the Word of God. If we want conversions, we must put more of God's Word into our sermons."
"The words are God's words, the words of the Eternal, the Invisible, the Almighty, the Jehovah of this earth. This Bible is God's Bible, and when I see it, I seem to hear a voice springing up from it, saying, 'I am the leaf, for I was penned by God; read it, for He is my Author.'"
"Oh, Book of books! And wast thou written by my God? Then will I bow before Thee. Thou Book of vast authority! Thou art a proclamation from the Emperor of heaven; far be it from me to exercise my reason in contradicting thee ... reason, thy place is to stand and find out what this Volume means, not to tell what this Book ought to say. Come thou, my reason, my intellect, sit thou down and listen, for these words are the words of God."
"It is no novelty, then, that I am preaching; no new doctrine. I love to proclaim these strong old doctrines, that are called by nickname Calvinism, but which are surely and verily the revealed truth of God as it is in Christ Jesus."
Regarding the doctrines of the faith - "By this truth I make a pilgrimage into the past, and as I go, I see father after father, confessor after confessor, martyr after martyr, standing up to shake hands with me... taking these things to be the standard of my faith, I see the land of the ancients peopled with my brethren - I behold multitudes who confess the same as I do, and acknowledge that this is the religion of God's own church."
"Christ Jesus, who is the sum and substance of the gospel; who is in Himself all theology, the incarnation of every precious truth, the all-glorious personal embodiment of the way, the truth, and the life."
"There is nothing for God to do. 'It is finished.' There is nothing for you to do. 'It is finished.' Christ need not bleed. 'It is finished.' You need not weep. 'It is finished.' God the Holy Spirit need not delay because of your unworthiness, nor need you delay because of your helplessness. 'It is finished.'"
Good. A very brief and general overview of Charles Spurgeon's life with special accent on his beliefs.
Reader's should be aware that it is basically hagiography. Spurgeon never does anything wrong in the book. That's a little snide of me, isn't it? That criticism aside (I did give it 5 stars!) it's an enjoyable and edifying book.
Chapter 1 is an overview of his life and ministry Chapter 2 Spurgeon's view of Scripture Chapter 3 Spurgeon's belief in Calvinism Chapter 4 Spurgeon's evangelistic style Chapter 5 Spurgeon's belief in the centrality of Christ to preaching Chapter 6 The necessity of the Holy Spirit for preaching Conclusion Spurgeon's legacy for today
An excellent though very brief read on the life and ministry of Charles Spurgeon. For those looking for lengthy biography, this is not it. It is no more than 125 pages, most of which are not biographical so much as organized quotations and sermon excerpts detailing key doctrines and teachings of Spurgeon (the sovereignty of God, evangelism, and the work of the Spirit and how they all fit perfectly together). If you’re looking for a brief summary of Spurgeon’s life and ministry, look no further. If you’re looking for a more detailed history of the man and his ministry, you may want to look elsewhere.
If you are not familiar with Bro. Spurgeon, this is an excellent introduction to the focus of his ministry. Dr. Lawson does an impressive job of sharing the two major themes of Spurgeon's preaching, the doctrine of grace and the imperative of presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ to one and all. I am about half-way in reading this series of books edited by Lawson, and most written by him. I cannot recommend this book and series enough, as they are far more than biographical. They get to the passion of the individual studied and shows how they faithfully served our Lord Jesus Christ. And, with such a heavy subject matter, I am amazed at the readability of each volume. Tolle lege!
Good read. This wasn't my favorite of this series by Lawson. There was only one biographical chapter. There was SO much more that could have been said about Spurgeon's life. For the most part, this book concentrated on the focus of Spurgeon's preaching. In Lawson's defense, the title is "The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon." However, having read some of the other books, I was expecting more personal history. If you are wanting a biography of Spurgeon, this isn't it. If you want to know the primary things Spurgeon preached in the pulpit. this is your book
For a more comprehensive biography, read Iain Murray's works, especially The Forgotten Spurgeon. In this little volume, Dr. Lawson breaks down the non-negotiable facets of Spurgeon's ministry, preaching, and spiritual disciplines. Spurgeon's pastoral success was never due to pragmatism. God blessed his unwavering committment to the inerrancy of scripture and his unabashed preaching of all he found there.
