The first of German creator Uli Oesterle’s long-form works to appear in English, Hector Umbra combines sci-fi, occult, noir and clubland influences in one explosive narrative. With a visual style reminiscent of Mike Mignola, English-speaking readers of all varieties are sure to fall in love with Oesterle’s work.

I really wanted to like this more. The drawing is fantastic, this guy clearly has talent. But the story is all over the place, it tries to explain too much and doesn't go anywhere. It would be a good thing for him to simplify or get a good scriptwriter. What is awesome is the edition, Blank Slate are proving to be one of the best publishers of Graphic Novels in the UK. Keep up the good work guys!

Una barra de amigos -cuatro- no termina todavía de recuperarse de la repentina muerte de uno de ellos -el rockero del grupo- cuando otro -un afamado DJ llamado alucinantemente Osaka Best- desaparece. Entonces, uno de los dos restantes (el otro ayuda, pero como secundario) arranca a buscarlo, convencido de que algo malo ha pasado. Hector Umbra, nuestro protagonista, recorrerá un demencial viaje donde a medida que descubra más y más cosas de la desaparición de Osaka, más y más irá conociendo un mundo que vive por debajo -o en paralelo- al nuestro. Y aunque la sinopsis puede indicar que estamos ante una de "investigación sobrenatural" -y de inmediato nos imaginamos una suerte de John Constantine alemán- el tono, la narrativa, el estilo de Oesterle es por completo diferente, con una potente identidad propia que le da un sabor personal único y contundente. Y aunque este libro no desentonaría con el sello Vertigo (en el mejor momento del sello, hay que aclarar) tiene una inspiración muy propia, un humor super divertido y una tensión que combina con todo lo anterior sin mella. Y debe ser la primera vez en mi vida que leo una historieta ambientada en Múnich. Complementando todo lo anterior, el dibujo de Oesterle es igualmente personal -una línea clara pero que no desdeña las sombras, con paralelismos con varios artistas de todas partes del globo, empezando obviamente con Mike Mignola (quien recomienda este libro desde la contratapa, al menos en la preciosa edición de Dib-buks), siguiendo después con autores menos conocidos (y a quien quizá el propio Oesterle desconozca) como Rob Guillory (Chew), Feliciano García Zecchin (4 Segundos) y, muy especialmente, Paul Grist (Kane, Jack Staff)- y por completo efectivo para la historia que está contando, incluso con momentos de gran despliegue, sobre todo en el climax de la historia. Mucho se habla de historieta francobelga cuando se habla de historieta europea (y un poco menos, pero se habla también, de la española). Hector Umbra viene a ofrecer una gran muestra de lo que se encuentra en Alemania.

A beautifully produced book, and beautifully drawn (excellently expressive inks and mood-specific colouring, if a little too dark at times), but I'm afraid that - even at just 220 pages - I couldn't bring myself to finish it. The plot, which starts off mysteriously, gets more ridiculous as it goes on, and there's an element of silliness that feels completely at odds with the supernatural detective tale blurbed on the back cover. This never seemed to be the book I felt I was sold, and it disappointed and underwhelmed, and then began to infuriate. Too many ideas thrown into an aimless story, and all the wonderful art in the world couldn't save it for me, I'm afraid.

Hector Umbra è un perdigiorno che dipinge per necessità. Dipinge creature mostruose, accumula tele che ritraggono esseri impossibili. Hector ha un gruppo di amici, perdigiorno come lui, appassionati di alcool, donne e uscite notturne. Due di questi amici scompaiono: il primo muore e il secondo viene rapito. E' l'inizio di un viaggio verso la follia, di una lotta contro il "Fronte di Infiltrazione Neurologica", una sorta di pensieri folli incarnati. Hector Umbra è uno dei pochi umani che possono vedere questi pensieri: scoprirà che basta forza di volontà, o meglio, sospensione di incredulità, per poterli anche combattere. La storia si sviluppa come un noir, raccontato benissimo sia nei testi e soprattutto nei disegni (che ricordano il Mike Mignola di Hellboy), con bellissime tavole dal tratto traballante e dai colori cangianti. E' una storia di pura fantasia, lunga ma mai noiosa, che si sviluppa benissimo, sa crescere e sa tendere al cataclismatico finale nella cattedrale sconsacrata. Da leggere.

Hector sabe que tiene que dejar de beber, de fumar y también de pintar gnomos/mounstruos/extraterrestres ,pero su amigo DJ Osaka esta perdido y el sabe que esta en riesgo, por eso se metera a bares del mas allá, hablara con locos, niños huerfanos ,reclutara a quien le pueda ayudar,incluso una ex-novia...

Nunca había leído un cómic Aleman, pero habia algo en el trabajo de Oesterle que me hacia querer ver ese tomo, un estilo artístico que recuerda a Gabriel Ba, a Mignola, a Stewart, mientras el ritmo de la historia es rápido, no da concesiones aunque tiende a ser una historia muy clásica, y se ven los actos de la historia muy marcados, se deja leer y se siente un aire fresco en esas paginas.

I absolutely loved this. Dark, seedy tone with some serious emotion and existential pondering to lose yourself in. Really intelligent sci-fi / horror graphic novel that is massively underrated. Felt like an 80's movie in some places, dank and wet, filled to the edges of the alley with questions and mysteries.

Looks great and the story's good, but the exposition is often stilted. Maybe it's the translation? Hard to know, bar the execrable "Glaswegian" (who uses slang from Edinburgh) the dialog is actually pretty good.

After a year in Munich I got this book as a present. It depicts streets and places where I got lost and where I tried to get even with the German Language. For that reason it is special!
