Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.

His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

শিশুদের জন্য লেখা কোমল হতেই হবে - আমাদের প্রচলিত এই ধারণা ভয়ানক ধাক্কা খাবে "শিশু কাহিনী" পড়ে। ঈশপের গল্পের মতো গল্পগুলো মূলত শিক্ষণীয়। কিন্তু গল্পের প্রয়োজনে নিষ্ঠুরতাও এসেছে। তলস্তয় ভালো ভালো সব কথা বলে শিশুদের বাস্তবতা থেকে দূরে সরিয়ে রাখতে চান নি। বই পড়তে যেয়ে এই ব্যাপারটাই সবচেয়ে ভালো লেগেছে।

ছোটদের লেখা পড়ে খুব আরাম পাই। কারণ এতে পৃথিবীর খারাপ দিক টা দেখানো হয় না। সুন্দর একটা জগৎ। যেখানে হানাহানি নেই,হিংসা নেই,লোভ নেই। ঠিক এই কারণে আমার শীর্ষেন্দুর লেখা পড়া হয় বেশি। অদ্ভুতুরে সিরিজ আমার বেশ প্রিয়। সে ভালো লাগা থেকে দ্যু প্রকাশনীর কিছু বই সংগ্রহ করেছিলাম,সব বাচ্চাদের। আনার সাথে সাথে সব-ই পড়া হয়ে গেছে। শেষ বই ছিল লেভ তলস্তয়ের "শিশু কাহিনী "।

এই বইয়ে লেখকের অনেকগুলো অনু গল্প রাখা হয়েছে। অনু গল্প বলেছি এ কারণে যে গুল্পগুলো দৈর্ঘ্য সর্বোচ্চ তিন পৃষ্ঠা। এত দারুণ গল্প তাও বাচ্চাদের। প্রত্যকটা গল্প পড়েছি আর অবাক হয়েছি। এত সুন্দর। শুনেছি লেভ তলস্তয় বড়দের জন্য খটমট বই লিখেছেন,সে লোক এত দারুণ শিশুতোষ গল্প লিখেছেন ভাবাই যায় না। এই গল্প ভালো লাগার পিছনে আরেক টা কারণ ননী ভৌমিকের অসাধারণ অনুবাদ। দ্যু প্রকাশনী দারুণ কাজ করছে,এসব গল্পগুলো আসলেই অনুবাদ হওয়া দরকার।

প্রিয় গল্প হাতি,আঁটি এবং সিংহ আর কুকুর। ভালো লাগছে পড়ে। সবচে বেশি মুগ্ধ করছে বইয়ের ছবিগুলো, দারুণ।

ছোটবেলায় আমাদের স্কুলে ছোট বইমেলা হইত। ওইখানে অনেক রঙ বেরঙ এর বই ছিল। রাক্ষস খোক্কস, জ্বীন পরী, রুপকথা, হানসেল আর গ্রেথেলের কাহিনী, সিনড্রেলা অথবা তুসার কন্যার বই ছিল। এত গুলো বইয়ের মধ্যে কেউ কি এই বই কিনে??
একটা শিশু। মুখে এক ধরণের কষ্টের ছাপ। ক্লাস কেজির বাচ্চার কি ভালো লাগবে এত দারুণ বই রেখে এই বইটা নিতে। অথচ বিক্রেতাও ছিল নাছোড়বান্দা। আম্মু আর বিক্রেতা মিলে এই বই এর গুণগান গাওয়া শুরু করল। কি ষড়যন্ত্র! নিলাম তারপরও বইটা।
আমার কাজিন আর বোনদের হাতে কত চমৎকার চমৎকার বই ছিল। একটু যে হিংসা হচ্ছিল না তা না। যদিও আগে ওদের বইগুলাই শেষ করলাম।
এরপর আমার বই টা। শিশুকাহিনী। ছোট ছোট অনেক গল্প ছিল। কত গুলো বিষাদের, কত গুলো ছিল আনন্দের।
কি আশ্চর্য! এমনও বই হয়? রাক্ষস খোক্কস নেই তারপর ও কত সুন্দর বইটা। কতগুলো চরিত্রের জন্য কতদিন ধরে যে মনটা কেদেছে তা আমিই জানি।
কিছু কিছু বই থাকে যেটা এই ছোট মনগুলোকেও ভাবিয়ে তোলে বা ভাবাতে শেখায়। এখন পড়লে কেমন লাগবে বইটা জানি না। কিন্তু ছোটবেলার সেই ভালো লাগাটা এখনো রয়ে গেছে।

It is the first of his books that I have read, and realised that I must read his other works, including one of his most famous work- "War and Peace".

It has 13 stories tackling various events which a child might encounter in his life. The stories are profound, they portray courage, friendship etc.

It also has amazing drawings which complement the storyline well.

A good start to the new year.

আমাদের বাঙ্গালা দেশের শিশুতোষ গল্পগাঁথা যদি এমন হয়- নরম জোছনার আলোভরা পূর্ণিমা রাতে মায়ের কোলে শুয়ে অবিরাম পায়চারিতে আদুরে আদুরে ছোঁয়ায় স্নেহার্ত কণ্ঠে মায়ের ঘুমপাড়ানি গান,,,,,

তাহলে লিও তলস্তয় নিঃসন্দেহে শিশুদেরকে ধূসরমাখা রণাঙ্গনে নিয়ে এসে তাদের হাতে বন্দুক-রাইফেল,তলোয়ার,কামান-বোমা তুলে দিয়ে এক দরাজ,ভরাট,গুরুগম্ভীর কণ্ঠে বলবেন ,

''Life is a battlefield,and you're upcoming যোদ্ধা!!!"

চমৎকার অলঙ্করণ!
আচ্ছা, এ ফ্রেন্ড ইন নিড ইজ় আ ফ্রেন্ড ইনডিড (মানে ঐ ভালুক আর দুই বন্ধুর কাহিনি টা) আর মিথ্যাবাদী রাখালের কাহিনিটা কি লেভ তলস্তয়েরই সৃষ্টি?

যাই হোক, অলঙ্করণ চোখ জুড়ানো। কোথায় যেন নিয়ে যায় ভাবনাকে, মনকে। শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায় কিছুদিন আগে বলে গেলেন ঢাকার বাতিঘরে: তলস্তয়দের আমলের রচনা ছিল অন্য মাত্রার! আদপেই তাই। অল্পস্বল্প লেখা, তবে তার গভীরতা কী–এমনকী এ ছোটদের লেখাতেও।

জীবনে প্রথমবার যখন তলস্তয়ের গল্প পড়ি ভীষন ভাল লেগেছিল। গল্পের বিষয়বস্তু ছিল ঈশ্বর, কর্মফল, ধর্ম এসব। প্রতিটা গল্প পড়া শেষ করে একটা শান্তির অনুভূতি হয়েছিল। ঐ যে বলে- এটা পড়ার পর আপনি আগের মানুষটি আর থাকবেন না- ঠিক ওমন। আমার দৃষ্টিতে তলস্তয়ের ঐ গল্পগুলো জেন গল্পের সমান। শিশু কাহিনীও এমন প্রত্যাশা নিয়েই পড়তে বসেছিলাম। ছোট ছোট সব গল্প। উল্লেখযোগ্য দিকটা হল- গল্পে গল্পে নীতিকথা শিখিয়ে ছাড়ার বাড়াবাড়ি এখানে নেই। গল্পগুলো খুব সরল, যা ঘটলো তারই বর্ণনা করেছেন লেখক। খারাপ ঘটলো না ভাল ঘটলো সে বিষয়ে কোন পন্ডিতি ফলান নাই। এক কথায় দারুণ!

This book is the Bengali translated version of Stories for Children
by Leo Tolstoy. The book also has illustrations by Alexei Pakhomov. The thing I love about this book is that reality isn’t sugar coated in these stories. The stories are about friendship, family, responsibilities, good advice, grief, death etc. There’s a bit of gruesomeness.But that’s how the world is and children should get to know about it a bit. It’s a great book for children and even for the child hidden in every adult.

তলস্তয়কে চেনেনা এমন কেউ হয়তো নেই।কিন্তু তার শিশুকাহিনী সম্পর্কে অনেকেই জানেনা।এক দুই পেজের ছোট ছোট গল্প,পড়তে খারাপ লাগেনা।রেখে দিবো নিজের বাচ্চাকাচ্চা হলে কখনো যেন পড়ে শোনাতে পারি।
