One of the weaker Dawn of DC entries, Titans #1 simply screams generic and predictable. It doesn't bring much to the table in terms of originality, and the art might be the least appealing of the universe reboot so far, but the hook is good enough to warrant investment.

WowEE this was a fun start!

A great intro to the Titans and their work as a unit. Cyborg always seems to be the MVP so I'm interested to see how this story parallels the Cyborg series.

Beast Boy is having ALL the fun, as usual, and Flash is having a little trouble that I'm DESPERATE to know about.

Really fun intro to the series so I'm excited for what's to come!

The Teen Titans will always hold a special place in my heart so I had no choice but to pick up this issue when I came across it. The story is pretty generic but the issue with reading a single issue vs an entire volume is it's hard to get a solid vibe especially bc this issue mostly laid the groundwork for the new Titans arc. But it's enough for me to read more issues to see where it goes!

Loved every second of this, managed to live up to the hype! My only qualm is that I wish Peacemaker had leaned more into the show/Starks style, it’s weird seeing him so serious in this.

Off to a pretty good start. The Titans reform in the absence of the JLA.

"The Justice League were a team. The Titans are something stronger."

Tom Taylor's long-awaited Titans series has finally hit the shelves, and while I had been hoping for this series ever since he teased the idea in Nightwing, my optimism was clearly misplaced since the beginning. Titans #1 is a disorganized, lifeless, and uninspiring comic that lacks a clear direction for the future. Tom Taylor has managed to disappoint yet again.

The Titans are presented as incredibly immature in this issue, resorting to cheap jokes reminiscent of a CW show and detracting from the few good moments this issue contained. Before entering Titans Tower, Raven, and Gar experience some drama, during which Raven telepathically calms Gar down. The panel depicting this is impressive, with the art and coloring complementing each other well. I quite liked it. However, the moment is ruined when they awkwardly kiss in front of a large group of strangers, and the other Titans react like dumb middle schoolers. This series is called "Titans," not "Teen Titans." The group is no longer naive teenagers; they're fully grown adults. It doesn't make sense for them to react this way. A dumb joke ruins every great moment this issue contains.

The plot is unbelievable and unoriginal. The Titans rescue a power plant, but their mission is interrupted when Peacemaker arrives and causes a scene with Gar. The team then "talks down" Peacemaker, giving a story opportunity for Tom Taylor to preach his political views. While I generally agree with Taylor's views, I am tired of how he presents them. It doesn't make sense for the Titans to be distrusted by the public, Amanda Waller, or the government after years of their mentors saving the world. This idea is incredibly unbelievable. I understand politics can be a challenging topic to incorporate into comic book narratives, but if a writer wants to do so, they should do it in a way that makes sense. Otherwise, the message may be received differently than intended, and whatever problem they raise awareness for is undercut by their lackluster representation.

Not only does the plot lack originality, but it also relies heavily on overused tropes and writing cliches. Even though Wally's death was supposed to be a pivotal moment, it failed to elicit any emotional response from me, and I don't understand why Tom Taylor thinks it would. His death will obviously be reversed or non-permanent, yet Tom Taylor attempts to make it seem significant and present it as a driving force for the story. I genuinely cannot fathom why someone with so much experience in the comic book industry writing for three different publishers still resorts to boring, overused cliches such as the "fake character death" trope.

Regarding the artwork, Nicola Scott's work is a mixed bag. While some panels are stunning, others are subpar. The first batch of panels is well-crafted, but the quality drops halfway through. The character designs and paneling becomes messy and uninspired, almost as if Scott lost interest in Taylor's script. Annette Kwok's excellent coloring helps to offset some of the dull artistic choices, but the poorly designed characters and confusing creative decisions in the second half of the issue are hard to ignore. The artwork could have been exceptional if Nicola Scott had put more effort into creating well-designed characters and meshing her art style with Taylor's script.

Overall, Titans #1 manages to be an unimpressive debut issue. The plot fails to meet DC's high standards as a flagship team book that replaces Justice League, and it's clear this decision will be reverted quite soon unless Titans manages to step up. The peculiar artistic choices only further diminish the impact of this issue, resulting in a subpar introduction to the series and one of the worst debut comic book issues I've ever read. 2.8/5.

3.5, even.

I'm annoyed with Titans for the same reason why Garth makes an appearance, but for some reason isn't going to join the team. This team is constantly subject to outside pressure based upon the popularity of characters from the Teen Titans cartoons, or even from the Young Justice cartoon.

There have been many members of the Titans. I actually loved the Technis Imperative, and it was one of the first DC graphic novels I ever read, after starting out my fandom with Marvel. So I know that there have been dozens and dozens of Titans over the years. Yet, the general public now believes that the primary Teen Titans are Beast Boy, Raven (usually with a misunderstanding about her actual powerset), Starfire, Dick Grayson, and Cyborg. Sometimes Wally West is allowed to hang out with them. In this issue, he is described as joining the team, but not moving into Titans Tower.

Those aren't the founding members. Garth is a founding member. It was Aqualad, Wonder Girl, Robin, Speedy, and Kid Flash.

There have been many abortive "Titans" miniseries in recent decades. They almost always use the team members from the Teen Titans cartoon. They almost always stress the same plot points over and over and over. Raven's father is Trigon the demon, acting up again. Starfire and Dick Grayson aren't sure whether they want to be in a relationship again. Beast Boy is a clown, but maybe he has some deeper emotional problems going on.

Over and over and over.

I'm not opposed to giving this team a shot again. But they're not going to maintain my interest unless they bring in some new teammates. They don't even have to be new characters-- just let Goddamn Garth use his codename of "Tempest," and employ the massive powerset he built up in the late 90s and early aughts. I don't really care whether Roy Harper rejoins. But they could welcome back Flamebird, and I would sag with tears of joy.

I liked this overall. I'm not overly informed about Titans history and I wonder if Tempest will eventually join, or if his appearance is a precursor to another character's "dawn." The art is decent in spurts and awkward in a few places. The opening sequence with Raven and Gar is touching.

Why are we always killing The Flash? Strangely, I was organizing my bookshelves and lingered over "The Button" and "Heroes in Crisis" and then read this. Is Flash just the easiest to mess with and resurrect? Poor Wally.

Peacemaker. Ug. I don't like him. I haven't liked him in any carnation I've ever seen and just seeing Waller's name makes my heart shrivel up. I was curious to see what kind of threats the grown up Titans would be dealing with, but now I'm apprehensive about actually enjoying this series.

The Justice League is gone, The Titans have to step up to take their place. Wally comes to the team as someone tries to kill him. The Titans find his dead body, but wait, Wally is alive and wants The Titans to solve his murder before it happens.

First of all, this issue reminds me of the Robot Chicken episode about dead comic book characters and it cracked me up because this issue falls into those tropes. It doesn't matter though because I love the Titans, but still.

As a side note, I love Donna Troy's black star costume. This is probably one of my favorite looks of hers.

Also - Hi Peacemaker, what are you doing here?

Despite my fondness for Dick Grayson (especially as Nightwing), I have bounced off of a number of versions of the Titans (teen or otherwise).

I just have a low tolerance for superhero "power creep", and team-ups introduce both that and a cast that gets stretched too thin more often than not.

But… this is Tom Taylor, whose Nightwing run inspired me to finally, actually get into comics. (And Tom Taylor's Nightwing is literally here, leading the team!)

…fine, I like it. Yeah, they fight a huge ape or whatever, but this feels nicely relationship- and personality-driven.

i enjoyed reading the characters for the first time in comics and i enjoyed them even if they seem little off from what i think they would act. there was one moment where ravens reaction to peacemaker felt kinda inappropriate for gar and for her, id prefer a glare not an actual vocalization because it makes it seem too over the top for the type of healthier relationship the writer seems to be setting otherwise, I enjoyed reading about the other titans and look forward to reading more.

the logical segue from superman vs. meshi for day 3 of my 31 comics/manga/graphic novels in 31 days. almost gave this three stars to be generous, but there is wayyyyy too much telling and not enough showing—like, to an egregious degree. the setup is interesting and the ending cliffhanger is interesting, but almost everything writing-wise in the middle was painfully boring

This was a good kick off for the series, to me.
A brilliant "cold open" and then a great murder mystery to solve. I look forward to the next installment and seeing what's in store for our favorite team.

I wanted this series to come out swinging, but it pretty much just got a base hit and that’s about it. Not bad, but could’ve been a lot better. While I’m not unhappy to see him, I’m curious as to why Peacemaker is showing up in so many random books lately.

Solid start to the series, just read it free on The DC infinite. Obviously one issue isn’t a whole story, so for just an introduction, it does exactly its job, not mad. Solid. Was it amazing? No. But I love hating on Peacemaker so I’m cool with it

Tom Taylor is so talented I would like to be able to hate him.
Everything he writes, everything, has a perfect flow, and such a grace and lightness to it, I keep wondering how he does that. And scriptwriting is supposed to be my job. I hate you, Tom Taylor. PLEASE never stop writing.

Flash is dead again. Holy time travel Nightwing. Other than that good story and sets up a nice antagonistic meeting with Peacemaker. What’s next?
