Amelia Reynolds Long (November 25, 1904 - March 26, 1978) was an American detective fiction and science fiction writer and novelist. Her story, "The Thought-Monster" was made into the 1958 film Fiend Without a Face. She co wrote the 1936 novel Behind the Evidence with William L. Crawford under the combined pseudonym Peter Reynolds. Some of her stories appeared under the byline "A. R. Long".
This mystery was published in 1949 and I was totally unfamiliar with the author. A beat-up copy landed on my bookshelf somehow, rejected by some lending library of the past. It was surprisingly good. PI Rex Davenport was asked to establish the identity of a man claiming to be Bruce Trevorton, an actor who had been killed some months previously. During the investigation other murders occur, and a known lookalike appears on the scene. Is the man the real Trevorton or the lookalike, and who is the murderer? It is written clearly, with engaging characters, a likeable protagonist, and the story is compelling. Back in the forties, I would have been a fan of this writer.
