Natalie Monroe tries to be the perfect daughter and friend. Her only complaint is that her lifelong best friend, Jackson Cage, doesn't think of her as anything more than that. When mysterious new guy Pierce Jeffry tells her that she's a descendant of unicorns and that there are powerful forces after her, she must figure out how to protect herself and those she loves before it is too late.

Natalie is just a normal girl. Other than her pale skin and eyes, nothing sets her apart. That was when realizes that she has the ability to heal. Slowly the story moves on, as Natalie finds that she is a unicorn. Pierce is trying to keep Natalie safe. Though the story ended a little abruptly, the premise of the story was interesting and the story was cute and witty.
If the author's aim was to engulf me in this story enough to get me to buy the next book, she failed miserably. There was just too much losing on the parts of the 2 main heroes of the story. I didn't experience enough interesting and exciting developments to make me want to find out what happened next to pay $3.99 to find out. Considering what was written in this first book that I received free, I would expect more leading me on with teases so I would have to buy yet another book to get more information. There are way too many really exciting fantasy books out there, that get right to it from the git go, that I don't have to endure ones that don't. IF Natalie had killed Haley, you just might have enticed me to read further. Too many nasty characters got away with being nasty. The only punishment is being dealt to the good guys.
Maddy, this book was phenomenal which really isn't a surprise since every book you write is. I can barely wait to start the next book so I can check on Natalie, Pierce and Jackson. Thanks Maddy for being the awesome authoress you are. June Saltiel
I liked the characters. It had an interesting twist at the beginning which continued to reveal a crucial story line. I would have liked a little more detail about the different factions, but it would have been difficult to weave it into Natalie's story line. Perhaps a chapter could have been integrated to flesh out the hierarchy of the clans, but the story moved on easily nevertheless.
This book was really slow to start. the story really doesn't even get going until over half way through the book. You learned about the characters, but the heroine doesn't ask enough questions to find out what's going on. She does not have the maturity of the high school senior she's supposed to be. Although it seemed a little childish at fkrst, the book does redeem itself and if recommend it for probably a younger to mid teen
A typical "first in a brand new series" teen story in which we learn a teen is different in some way, but it's all very mysterious, there's a hot guy but he's kind of keeping her kidnapped and threatening her loved ones if she escapes. Oh, but he's so hot, maybe something will come of this after all...
So a disappointing ending which isn't an ending. This should have been the first half of the next book. I hate teasers that don't get into the meat of the storyline.
I found this quite an odd story. A student is in danger, but she doesn't remember why or what magic ability she has. This makes it all a bit disjointed. So when the student finds out who she is, you're as confused as she is because magic hasn't been mentioned in this world before. Some of the story jumps around and it feels like things you need to know are left until the last minute.
Its sugary sweet but I couldn't take the contradictions. One moment she had healing powers since she was a kid the next only a couple of years. And there were several other times this happened.
This was a very interesting take on what unicorns and their surrounding crowd can do and how they interact. Read during the Corona Virus Pandemic of 2020.
This book is an interesting fantasy/ romance story. It was a little confusing. I loved Natalie and her two best friends Maxie and Jill. They are amazing characters. It was a fun story to read.
Natalie had felt like a freak all her life. Her unusual silver eyes, fair hair and pale skin that did not tan, she looked different and at high school that is not a good thing. Then in a freak accident with her childhood friend Jackson, Nat found out she had the ability to heal others. Every year just before her birthday she would have dark foreboding dreams, more like nightmares really and since this year she was turning 18, they seemed to be getting worse. Pierce was the token bad boy who had a good heart and a secret and he has been madly in love with Natalie since they were kids only she doesn't remember him at all. Due to a tragedy in her life, Natalie does not remember her past and Pierce needs to get to her to keep her safe before she comes into her powers. Forces of darkness are at work and even those he trusts will betray him. Can he save the only girl he has ever loved and will she remember her past? Natalie's life is spiralling out of control, she feels safe with Pierce even though she barely knows him and he may be the only one she can trust if she wants to stay alive long enough to find out who she really is. This story weaves the mythology of unicorns and their amazing ability to heal others, a very engaging read.
I enjoyed reading this book. I would give it a 3.5. It was a good story, a little abrupt in the end. It just had a climatic moment with no ebbing back to the plain....I cannot find anything regarding if the author intends to right more in the series, I would definitely read it. I liked her characters. I could have gone with some more development between Pierce and Natalie. There was no building tension between them. Also there were two things that I thought was lacking. I had the hardest time trying to figure out what season it was in the book. Crazy I know but I was confused. There was also a surprising amount of "lack of protection" from Pierce. As if he would just drop her off at her house and leave when the Visioners were on her tail. It was not believable at all.
Wow! This was a great book and I can't wait for the release of the second book in this series. Natalie thinks her life is hard with being a couple of months from graduating and her dad suddenly getting married and having to move into her new step moms house. Not to mention the new girl that is determined to make her life miserable. At least her new step brother is great and takes up for her. With the hot new guy in town, things get even more strained with her best friend Jackson. At least she has her best friends Jill and Maxie to help her figure things out. Especially when things spiral out of control and Natalie discovers she is a mystical creature and her life and the lives of the ones she loves are in terrible danger.
I was so totally annoyed when that guy appeared and all the girls around start raving about him and how he is so stunning and gorgeous and blablabla.... Then he is a unicorn and apparently that's enough to have me raving too. Not that I especially like unicorn, they are so enigmatic, it's hard for me to trust them. See the silly high school talk coming up... no, let's get serious.
This book was a nice read, very entertaining and cute and witty. I really enjoyed the interaction of the characters, the sarcasm, and the mystery going on about who is who and who the hell is the bad guy/girl. The world was also well constructed, and I'll look for the second book in the series.
Unicorns…. need I say more??!! I think every little girl goes through a unicorn phase. An urban fantasy with one was fun to read. The story flowed nicely- good throughout the book. Easy to read and follow. From beginning to end, it built to the ending moment. Nicely paced book for a good read. The author only touched on the surface of the world, and it will be nice to see what is built upon it. Be forewarned that there is no resolution to the story and no second book at this time. When will there be the next one….. waiting……
Different in a good way for a paranormal book. Love the author & was hesitant because of the unicorn perspective. I should have known better. If you like her other works you'll enjoy this clean paranormal read.
The whole unicorn idea was far fetched for me... And I thought there needed to be more relationship development in some of the areas...But other than that it was an enjoyable read...
I really enjoyed this book. It's one of the YA Fantasy books with a girl learning that she is a supernatural being and that receives her powers during high school. What made it different was that she isn't the expected supernatural being such as a witch, an elemental, a werewolf, or any of the others that have been written about so much.
I don't want to give anything away, so that's all I'll say about it. I think it is a worthwhile read, and recommend it for those who dream of being something different.
