A Lupus Handbook: These Are the Faces of Lupus

Rate this book
Flannery O'Connor once wrote that sickness has no company. In defiance of this stark reality, A. G. Moore wrote "These Are the Faces of Lupus". Ms. Moore has lived with lupus for almost twenty years; in those years she learned to be productive and hopeful. Her goal in releasing this well-researched book is to share her insights and to help others meet the challenge of their own illness.

Really down to earth

This book is written very well. The author doesn't try to talk down to the patient as many books do. I enjoyed this one and learned some new facts. I've read a ton of lupus books. This is one I will recommend.

If you have lupus, or someone you know has lupus, this is a very helpful book. The different profiles show the ways that lupus can affect different people. In the second part of the book there is information about lupus research. Although the author does talk about her experience with lupus, that is not the focus. Her personal information just illustrates the way lupus can change a life. The author does not water down some of the hard facts about lupus--she reasserts throughout the book that without information the patient is not able to become an advocate for themselves. So a lot of information information, sometimes difficult to read, is in this book. The Lupus Foundation has put this book on its recommended reading list, so it's pretty safe to assume that the author deals with the subject responsibly.

This book is a mix of stories, explanations and research on lupus and how it affects people differently.
Each part (clinical profiles; research on lupus; how the two interlock) has chapters, each in turn, addressing one story or one aspect at a time. Therefore it is well organised and composed.
Everything is written from the author's point of view. There is no writing style per se. It reads as you would talk to someone who is eloquent.

It is a short and easy read that can be easily read again, in part or in full. There is nothing particularly memorable about it and I don't think it aims to be.
This is a very informative book on the subject which would be handy to dip into as and when needed.

This ebook wasn't what I expected. It haf some interesting information about some famous names who (most likely or definitely) have had lupus and then the second half of thr book is the author's own anecdotes about her diarase and research she's done online. Basically the book reads similarly to a senior year thesis paper for an undergraduate degree. Wasn't terrible, and the parts that were memoiresque/just about her own illness and life were the most intriguing, but it also wasn't particularly good. 1.5 stars rounded up.

Informative and insightful!

I
Insighyful,

Dealing with lupus myself and hearing some of the things that I go through, lets me know I'm not alone. We most of the times have to be our on advocate because we live with this disease and know what works for us. I think everyone with or without an autoimmune disease should read this book to get a better understanding of what we go through. Love this book and sending my strength and prayers to everyone who is affected. Thanks for this amazing read!

-It starts with the story of diverse famous people who had Lupus. Many of those I'd seen on TV, etc but I didn't know they had Lupus. Every case is different.
-She's not an expert doctor but she explains very well, and in a way that it is so easy to understand. The book is well written, good narration.
-After so many years reading everywhere about Lupus and knowing that Lupus is still a mystery I learnt new thing I didn't know about Lupus and I confirmed things that I had experienced but didn't know they were a fact.
-Admirable. The author was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and she talks about different research done about the link Autism-Autoimmune disorders.
-The fact that she is a patient is very good, the point of view is unique.

Great read

The information was great for those new to lupus or their families. What I don't like is the author used Wikipedia as a source for a lot of her information. She, however did backup a lot with medical journals too.
