My Mirror Self, and I

Rate this book
The novella My Mirror Self, and I is about finding the courage to carry on in the face of adversity. An intimate exploration of a young woman's struggle with breast cancer and depression, it has been described as "powerful", "compelling", and "uncompromising" by readers.Cassie is a small town girl with everyday a happy marriage, a fulfilling job, and eventually a family. In eighteen short months her life and hopes slide from her grasp - her marriage to David is failing, and her career prospects are fading fast. Already struggling with her isolation as depression tightens its grip, she is devastated to discover she has breast cancer...Now Cassie has to choose. Does she let her downward spiral continue all the way to the bottom, or can she find something - anything - to fight for and make her future worth living? This novella touches on themes explored in books like Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, but it is written in a style more akin to Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, with elements of Victoria Hislop's The Island.*The story contains explicit language.*

I was born on the 16th Feburary, way back in the 1970’s, in England. I still live there with my lovely wife and lovably mad young son.

Believing that writers are human beings too, I have decided not to cut myself into separate pieces and give them each a pseudonym. I persist in the belief, however unusual, that readers are intelligent enough to cope with a single writer who embraces a range of styles and genres. (Except when I write as a character!)

My experiments and dabblings even include a little poetry. You can find my assorted scribblings at: http://tjames.org

I’m a fan of literary fiction because it usually represents a mirror of life with all that is good and not so good. In this intense novella, the author T. James delivers a vivid, and compelling story.

It opens much like a love story full of life and vigor. A young couple falls in love, marry and start a life together, then all ll breaks loose.

The story is told through the eyes of a young woman named Cassie. T. James does an amazing job of transporting the reader into Cassie’s life. His writing can be lyrical as seen in an engaging prologue, but he has the ability to deliver gut wrenching realism dealing with terrifying consequences. Most of the story involves a powerful inner dialog as Cassie wrestles with the discovery that she has breast cancer and concerns about her marriage. When there is dialogue, you’ll find powerful exchanges given in a candid and frank manner.

Be prepared for a gripping and engaging story with strong emotion. You’ll find yourself cheering for this young woman even as her life appears to be cascading out of control. It is not a story for the faint of heart but if you enjoy psychological drama, T. James delivers!

This beautifully written piece of literary fiction, centers on depression brought on by a devastating cancer. I felt myself to be rooting for the main character Cassie. The author pens such vivid descriptions you cannot help but to be drawn into the moment. Although, not my preferred genre, if this is your style of literature, you will love this author's writing. It is eloquent, clear and vivid, you will not be disappointed. T. James utilizes his former profession to deal with a complex subject in a sensitive and insightful manner. This author is one to watch.

My Mirror Self, And I presents some familiar struggles to many people - relationships and health - as well as personal growth when a relationship begins to develop through its inevitable stages and faces challenges both within and without, real or imagined.

Work, life, and health all must find a balance in any relationship, and trade-offs in time and separation can occur for the best of reasons but with unpredictable outcomes.

This story is an exploration of all these things that occur in one couple's experience with learning to know one another through all these challenges.

I had the pleasure to read various drafts of this book, and I enjoyed it as much the last time as I did the first. The authenticity of emotion, the realism of the character, they niggled their way into my head so it wasn't so much reading a book as hearing the confessions of a good friend. It's a moving piece of fiction that left me inspired .. and craving ice cream. Highly recommended.

I'm an emotional person to begin with, however the author's vivid writing is so full of emotion and so realistic I went through more than my usual amount of tissues. An extremely well written and inspiring story. You will root for Cassie and feel for her as she struggles. A must read.
