King Henry Tapes #2

The Foul Mouth and the Cat Killing Coyotes

Rate this book
King Henry Price, honored and learned graduate of the Institution of Elements, has settled back into his normal life, running his Artificer shop, creating new designs, selling old ones, and ignoring the occasional explosion when testing goes haywire. He's been minding his own business...only when he happens across a bunch of bullies picking on a woman, he can't resist the opportunity to smash faces, can he?

King Henry never expected the bullies would be part of the Coyote Nation, he never expected that he could be starting a war, and he surely never expected one of his lost sisters would be on the other side.

Jordan Josephine Price...found you at last.

The Good
The World According to King Henry...
If any book is going to give someone insight on how my brain really works behind these innocent brown eyes and girly long hair, this is the book to do it. I have a weird kind of thought process that takes the most mundane things and either over analyzes them to the point of hilarity or makes them into something naughty and ridiculous. This is what King Henry does. He has a way of viewing the world through King Henry goggles and only a few could really understand the genius of it. Once you get pulled into the world of King Henry, there is no going back.

In a Nutshell...
King Henry was totally minding his own business, thinking about his Taco Bell burritos he was going to grub down on. It's not his fault that some thugs were harassing a girl--we all know King Henry hates bullies. So of course he beat the living crap out of them. It's also not his fault those thugs ended up being werecoyotes and under the protection of one of the most influential and dangerous people in the city, the head coyote Horatio Vega. Oh, and Henry's long lost sister JoJo just happens to be married to the jerk. So yeah, not King Henry's most shinning of moments. Things only get worse as the coyotes plot revenge upon King Henry, and now he is caught between starting a war with the Coyote Nation or saving himself and his friends butts and leaving his sister to an unknown fate.

This Means War...
I love how King Henry threatens years of peace between the Mancers and the Coyote Nation in a matter of minutes. All for a sister that he's never had a close relationship with. I don't know if I should respect him or roll my eyes at his antics. He really doesn't have limits to the lengths he will go to save his sister and settle a score. Now that I respect. I too hate bullies, and watching someone make people accountable for their actions is extremely satisfying. I have a feeling this storyline is not over, and I can't wait to see how far Raley will go with it.

Young King Henry...
One of the reasons I love The King Henry Tapes series is the second plot line in which we get to see snippets of young King Henry at the Asylum (It's a school, people, not a mental institution. Get with the program.). This time we get to witness what the Mancer school was like and how Henry dealt with all the changes. The camping trip was pure brillance. It was both frightening and hilarious. King Henry's natural skepticism and suspicious nature made things even better as the mystery of whether the camping trip is a test by the school or a real disaster unravels.

King Henry's Subjects...
King Henry is the same smart-mouthed, sarcastic, painfully truthful guy we have all come to love. But it's his friends that I want to talk about. Tyson (or T-Bone as Henry likes to call him) often made me smile. Why he has stayed friends with King Henry, who is often purposefully raciest and insulting, I have no idea. Henry only does it to get a rise out of Tyson and it always works. Next is Pocket, Henry's childhood friend. I think he is the perfect counterpart for Henry: loyal and logical. He finds Henry hilarious--which is always a plus--and becomes more brave with Henry's support. Then we have Valentine. I can't wait to hear more about her. We know that King Henry eventually dates her but there is more to the story that Raley keeps dangling in front of our faces but wont elaborate on. It's both frustrating and exciting. I hope we will get to the good stuff between Val and Henry in the next book.

Creepy...
Now we get to the bad guy, Horatio Vega. This guy is Creepy with a capital C. He comes across reasonable and kind, but in his eyes you see your painful death. It's just freaky. I don't know what to really think about him just quite yet, but I know that when he first arrived on scene, I got the chills.

A Fresh Idea...
The plot was interesting and well thought out. The action was gritty and entertaining. I like how Henry analyzes everything during his fights. I was entertained the whole time. Raley has a different style of writing that really appeals to me. His concept is fresh and new. I have yet to read a book similar to this one. Even his ideas on supernatural creatures is unique. Raley has a handle on his craft that is very admirable.

The Bad
The parts in which we get into the technical analysis of magic or wereanimals gets a little confusing. I had to read them twice to fully understand what was being said and what everything meant.

Though this is a series, I still felt like this book was a little unfinished. I see why Raley is saving the good stuff for later, but I wished for a little more closure at the end. Maybe I am just being selfish because I always want more King Henry and his adventures. Write faster, Raley!!! ;)

The Snuggly
This is not a romantic book. We get glimpses of who young Henry dated while growing up and the girl who got away type stuff, but there is no romance or sex in this book. Okay, there is nudity (this is a book, people, it's not like you see anything, it's just slightly described) and references of a sexual nature.

Overall
Though I really loved The Foul Mouth and the Cat Killing Coyotes, I did like the first book a little more. But overall, this was a great sequel. I found the storyline entertaining and the new characters fascinating. I can't wait to see what Raley has in store for us next. A highly recommended read.

Excerpts
Smith flipped around so fast he almost poked me in my eye. “Who are you?”

A few of the kids groaned, Welf the loudest of them all. Standing next to Smith I felt smaller than I usually did but I still glared him down . . . or up. “King Henry Price,” I told him.

Smith winked at me. “Our late arrival.”

“I was busy.”

“Do you know that you’re the only Artificer attending this school, King Henry Price?” Smith asked me.

“So I’ve heard.”

“Guess it means I should give you the name Snowflake on account of being unique.”

I shook my head at him. “No . . . I think King Henry is name enough for anyone.”

Smith’s smile got all twisted up in a smirk. “King Henry and Pocket . . . and I don’t even have to do any work, it’s not fair, it’s not fair! So . . . King Henry . . . what’re your hobbies?”

I smirked back at him. “Fighting, stealing, f**king, and smoking . . . in that order.”

It started Smith into a laughing fit that ended up in a coughing fit. When he could breathe again he just shook his head. “I love this job . . .”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You better hope Valentine is dead, King Henry,” Miranda told me, “because if she’s alive and if I get to see her again, I’m talking her into burning a hole into you.”
“Kinky . . . you never know when you’re going to need another hole . . .”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“But,” Hope growled, her hands bony, whitened fists, “you wanted to stay here!”

“Only I’m not into barricades; it’s not the zombie apocalypse, is it? Which brings me to my next point: Welf’s a necromancer, Pocket’s a floromancer. Trees is what this fine son-of-a-bitch does. You see his stick?” I asked. “Look at that stick. Big ol’ stick. Bet you ask nicely he’d let you touch it.”

Pocket blushed crimson.

Thank the Mancy for Valentine, she’s the only one who laughed.

“Foul Mouth,” Welf kept hissing, “I’m going to hurt you.”

So love King Henry! Things just happen fast and furious all around him. First book introduced us and gave vampire background. Learned a bit about the were's this time with the promise of more to come!
Enjoy the balance of past and present through out the story. We learn more about the Asylum and how mancers are trained. And how that shaped the King Henry we know and love today.

That's one foul mouth #2

I don't go for bad language, I do use it occasionally for effect or punctuation. I don't care for talking or listening to sex talk (keep it in the dark where it belongs). That all said, I love me some of these books. So as long as you don't read them out loud in front of 14 year old me, ENJOY!

The Foul Mouth and the Fanged Lady (The King Henry Tapes Book 1) This book was just as good as the first. I gave it only 4 stars so that if one of the following books is better, I will be able to show the improvement by giving it 5 stars. I'm not exactly sure why I like these books because King Henry (yes, that's his real name), is a s.hythead! I'm not too fond of his language but it's nothing I haven't heard before.

The one thing I find annoying is the back (past) and forth (present) way the chapters are mainly written. In one chapter and King Henry is talking about his childhood/adolescence and the next he's in the present/future. It gets confusing at times.

This time King Henry is not involved in an adventure with Anne B the vampire. This time he invites a war between the were coyote nation and himself. He also discovers that his favorite sister (who ran away from home at the age of 15) is in this gang and married to the alpha werecoyote. Hijinks ensue, deals are made and things pretty much don't go King Henry's way.

All the main characters are present and accounted for (some more than others). There isn't much magic or supernatural going on here and other than Valentine (his crush) using fire, it's all pretty low key magically.

Still, I will keep reading (though I may break it up a bit with some cozy Halloween mystery books. :) It IS, that time of year again. :)

This is the second book in the King Henry Tapes series and is in a way the second setup story. It deepens the world, gives more character backstory, and sets up a lot of the tension and dynamics for later books in the series.

It dives more deeply into the school arc than the first book did. Where that book had some key highlights, particularly with regards to King Henry's family situation, this one tells more of a contiguous story of the school days.

The post-school arc is a bit less significant than the previous story, but important for setting up the characters. It is enjoyable for the characters and narration, but probably the weakest post-school arc in the series for me.

Despite that the book is a quick read, still lots of fun, and completes the setup phase because after this one it is off to the races.

Second book and it's pretty good.
EXCEPT there's this AWFUL 'white american man trying to write a english-not-my-first-language'.
The way he wrote a person that DOESN'T speak english as first language is AWFUL.
Don't get me wrong, it's borderline offensive.
But hey, ok. I get it. It's difficult to find those in Fresno.
I forgive you. Great book, really.
T-Bone is fantastic (hope he gets a girlfriend. FR)
Asylum stuff? Great. Really enjoyed it.
Loved the new characters (both in past and present).
Love the mancy. Truly great magic system.
Love the weres & vamps. Pretty good ideas.
And the short, petite KHP.
See so much of me in him.
And that's NOT a compliement.
Hope the fucker goes for therapy.
He needs it.

Fun read

While not as much crazy twists as the first in the series, I really enjoyed the second instalment. The main character is flawed, deeply, and knows it and only sort of cares. But he is also smart and resourceful and I find his dumbass endearing. Plus, this series is expanding my vocabulary greatly.

I found a series I can't stop reading. This book was wonderful. King Henry is the best main character By far. He is loud and obnoxious but so delicious. He gets into so much trouble sometime he causes it (most of the time) other times it finds him. I love reading his he gets out of it. These books are like reading two books at once. King Henry at school and as an adult. Just love them.

Good book

I like the book. The story is interesting, not sure what to think about jumping between two or more events but it makes for an interesting read. Going to have to read the next one and see where things go.

The second book is better than the first only because it doesn't have the slow start. It still flashes back and forth between King Henry's time in the Academy and current time.
So last book he got to deal with vampires, this time it's dealing with the largest were nation, the coyotes.

surprisingly awesome

Absolutely love the gritty but also hilarious inner and outer dialogue. Didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. Interesting characters, creative explanation of magic, lots of pop culture references, and unpredictable plot…. Recommend you give it a try!

Excellent follow up.

I love the characters and the world he is building up. Having the backstory interleaved with current time is a nice approach.

Review posted here: http://offbeatvagabond.blogspot.com/2012/04/indie-book-review-foul-mouth-and-cat.html

In the sequel of The King Henry Tapes series, King Henry is back and has managed to really step in it. After playing hero to save a woman being harassed in a parking lot by a group of men, he quickly finds out that the men aren't human. They are Were coyotes. And King Henry thinks nothing of it until he finds out their leader is so fearsome, even his mentor Ceinwyn is afraid of them. And what is worse? His sister Jojo, who he hasn't seen in years, is married to the big bad coyote. But before he can save her from him, the Coyotes have something planned for King Henry as payback.

I really enjoyed this book just a much as the first one. King Henry is still his same old self; a smart ass, rude, and still jumping the gun. As I said with book 1, I love the idea of him recollecting his life at the Asylum. The story of the camping trip was great and funny. Scary, but still funny. There was something about that camping trip that reminded me of an episode of Naruto. It made me love it more. I love how King Henry is suspicious of anything and anyone and he has plenty of reason to be.

I love that we get more of King Henry's friend Tyson or T-Bone as King Henry calls him. Tyson hates it which is all the more reason he does it. I wondered through this book and Tyson asked it as well; why are they friends? King Henry always has some geek or racist joke in store for Tyson and he doesn't tell him everything specifically the vital information. But throughout the book and especially near the end there is such a great dynamic and understanding between them, it is actually nice. Not a word I would use to describe King Henry, but it is true. I also like when going through the past, he has the same kind of relationship with Pocket. I hope to see him with grown up King Henry. Well as grown as King Henry can get.

This was such a great story. The whole possibility of war. Mancers and coyotes have a certain kind of peace between them. And it takes King Henry just a couple days to threaten that and start a war, all for his sister. King Henry and his assumptions makes you think of how he has survived this long. But I loved where this went. I love that Raley makes his fight scenes so action packed and funny. Goodness, this would make such an awesome movie.

I can't wait for book 3. When we finally meet the coyote leader, Horatio Vega, you aren't sure about what makes him scary. But there is something about him that rubs you wrong way. And when you learn why he is so scary, you will be shouting "Shit!". It is not pretty. I am also very curious about the fairy that contacts King Henry when he is younger. It keeps warning him about the wind and wants to protect him. I wish we got more as to why it chose him and why it wants to protect him. But that is a mystery that I am dying to have uncovered. So it is very suspenseful for me.

I am a huge fan of this series. It is so entertaining. Raley definitely has a way with words. I already have some quotes highlighted in this book I plan to live by. And again, the mancy idea is so fresh and cool. It is nice to have some fresh blood in the supernatural world. As I said with book 1, Raley's idea of vampires is so unique. And his take on Weres is just as original and fresh. I love it! So if you are looking for something truly unique and out of the box, start this series today. You won't regret it.

“The Foul Mouth and the Cat Killing Coyotes” is the second book in the King Henry series. The King Henry tapes are fun, fun and more fun. I just love them!
Like in the first book two stories are parallel told. The first story by 14 year old King Henry and the second by grown-up King Henry.

14 year old King Henry goes on the first school field trip with his new class members – a camping trip of all things! Thrown in a tent with his favorite enemy Welf and hearing creatures outside the tent at night… the school trip is not going as planned… I LOVE 14 year old King Henry and it’s so much fun to see how he handles this unusual situation.

Grown-up King Henry saves a lady in a parking lot from bullies… not because of the lady (of course not!)… just because he cannot stand bullies… Unfortunately one bully is the nephew of the King of Coyote Nation and so King Henry starts almost a war just by proving a point ;)

This time I liked the story of 14 year old King Henry a bit more. Maybe because it was so much fun to see King Henry interacting with the very emotional girls on that trip.
Overall I loved this book as much as the first book in the series. King Henry – always swearing, being sarcastic and rude but never diplomatic – is one of my favorite book characters.

I am looking forward to the third book in the series “The Foul Mouth and the Troubled Boomworm” (publ. date: 2013).

King Henry Price, both as a student and as an adult, is rude and obscene and funny and even though very much a fictional character, also very fully developed and a real personality. Because of the rudeness, I would never recommend this to anyone who is genuinely offended by or even uncomfortable with foul language. I'm not, being much more offended by hate language and things meant to hurt someone's feelings than I am by the F bomb, and I found this book and the one before it, to be entertaining and a lot of fun.

I enjoy the story being told in two time frames, both in the school days at the magical, but not Hogwarts, asylum, and in the adult world where King Henry must make a living and deal with such things as finding his missing sister married to the Head Were-coyote.

This series was recommended to me when I was lamenting being done with the most recent Dresden Series book, and there is a sense of familiarity in the use of magic to fight off supernatural crime. It is a fun and energetic story, if you like magic and mystery and a certain sense of honest cynicism.

A modern day fantasy. I found this book and books 1 & 3 of the King Henry Tales series entirely entertaining, so much so that I read them back-to-back. OBYW King his the protagonist's name, not his title. The novels switch between flashback chapters of King Henry's school experiences and chapters set in the 'current' period of his life. Rife with adventures with the magically gifted, spirits and shape-changers. Very well conceived and written, plus a good editing job.

Such a fun foul mouthed ride

I read the first 2 King Henry books today and enjoyed every minute of it. It's a familiar world, yet with a twist. Yes, the language is foul. If you have a delicate sensibility, skip it. This book reminds me of a much lighter hearted
Joe Pitt book. King Henry Price LIKES to get into scrapes. Suspects he has not been told all about the world by his teachers and is determined to figure it out on his own. The writing style is a mix of flashbacks in the form of recordings for future students and present day shenanigans. Each book draws out a little more than we knew before. Gives him more depth and a glimpse of what he already has become.
Buckle in for a wild ride full of lots of f*cks and action.

So much more snark.

Second of the King Henry Tapes continues the Foul Mouth's recordings for the next generation of Mancers (magic users). Make sure you read them in order. A lot of this one is a setup for a whole lot of possibilities to come. Daley does a great job juggling chronology in this book like in the first. Really good switching up the past and present with enough of a seam to make it easy to distinguish between the two. We get to meet some shifters along with a very special surprise member of the Pack which makes everything more difficult for King Henry. Especially with his lack of, shall we say, finesse in realms of diplomacy. King Henry's skills are growing by leaps and bounds too_-beyond the bounds the Asylum told him were possible.

I love the plot twists in this one and totally did not see them coming. The story starts immediately in the action, and the protagonist's voice takes the audience's attention and intelligence for granted in a way that is purely compelling for his characterization. I pretty much can't get enough of this series.

Read it, people. If you're a grown-up or mature YA who likes YA-oriented urban fantasy, but are sick and tired of YA urban fantasy pulling its punches when it comes to sex, violence, and cussing, then this is a good series to get started on, and this book in particular is flat-out excellent.

More King Henry kicking butt and swearing his way through it is always a good thing, and we definitely get that in spades this time around. I love these books and cannot wait for more. I only wish there were like 20 of them so I could learn all the stuff that hasn't been told yet!

I don't like doing plot reviews or coming anywhere near spoiling stuff for others, so I'll just say that if you read the first one, you're going to be just as pleased with this one. And eager for more. If you haven't read any of them...well, what are you waiting for??

When I picked this up, I was worried that the two years since I'd read the first book would leave me lost and confused. Happily, there were enough reminders to jog my memory. I really appreciate that in a series. Also happily, this book was as much rollicking fun as the first one. It continues in the same pattern as before, interspersing King Henry's adult adventures with reminiscences of his adventures in magic school. It also ups the stakes with the introduction of were-society. This will be a fun series to follow.
