The worst drought in recorded history has left the small rural town of Havensburg, Kentucky in isolation and despair. Reserves are drying up, local officials have failed to enforce water-rationing regulations, and the relentless heat is causing panic and unrest among the town's citizens.
The Drought follows an eclectic cast of characters through a volatile two weeks of greed, lust, and violence, leading to an inevitable and extraordinary climax no one will see coming.
And it all begins with Willie Strasbourg stealing a pair of underwear from the girl next door . . .
Way to much going on in this story. The poker game chapters were longer than any other chapters. I skimmed it to finish the book. It’s nothing but a depressing tragedy. The author put every terrible thing that could happen in one story without tying up the lose ends of which there are many! Then ending, how generic and predictable, it started raining.
This is a long book (799 pages)and had potential. The problem is the author leaves you hanging. When it looks like the author is about to disclose some of the mysteries, the book ends with no closure. You would think there was a part two, but NOT. After investing so much time in this book it ended very poorly. I would not recommend it.
Seriously awful mistakes. These errors were made multiple times: do written as due champagne written as champaign as soon written as assume excited written as exited hear written as here dredge written as drudge losing written as loosing chalked written as chopped
Liked this book a lot though the title is deceiving as to what the actual book is about. Would prefer to.give it 3 1/2 stars instead of 4 but enjoyed it enough to.give it 4 over 3. It is a long read and the author does drag out some parts especially the poker scenes but the ending was riveting
This is such a good book! It is kind of long but it is worth it. I was still a little confused about the ending but the rest of the book was great. I guess it just gives me an excuse to read it again. I give The Drought 5 stars!
This book took forever to get through and I'm a fast reader. The story was overall good and the characters were great. Too many endings not closed up and the reader left hanging. Overall - disappointed.
There is so much I really enjoyed about this book but then again it seemed to drag and lost my interest. All of a sudden Willie goes from this weird nerdy neighbor to one of the most popular guys. The poker games dragged and got really detailed which is nice if you are into cards but I found myself skimming to just the conversation. The stories of the characters and the events that tied them together kept me reading.
This book grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go.
So many characters, and stories of each of their lives, that it should be confusing, but this story is woven together beautifully. The author does a perfect job of bringing you in, and you are compelled to read on and learn every detail that is revealed, right to its last page.
I couldn't even finish the book, it became to exasperating to read. The poker game chapter went on and on and on. I finally just skipped to the very last chapter when I was about 23% into the book -- and I was glad I didn't bother with the entire thing, the ending wasn't any better than the 23% I read.
It took me a while to get into this book, as others have mentioned, it is of a slower pace, especially as I'd been reading a lot of 'lighter'summer reads recently. However, I think the effort and perserverance was worth it. The pacing felt like it was atmospheric of the lethargic hot summer described and I was interested in all the characters. There were a couple of plot points I felt were weak - especially a v inappropriate revelation from a mother to her daughter - which turns out to be incomplete and misleading in such an important way. I didn't realise the book was self published and maybe a good editing team could help with these sorts of problems.
I keep reading. . . reading. . . reading and I've finally gotten half way through. Guess what? This book is about a small town with a bunch of low-life, sex-crazed, foul-mouthed druggies; and by the way, there's a drought. I'll keep going, but this is definitely not as advertised.
Surprisingly, I finally got into the characters and enjoyed the sad ending; so much so that I had to change my rating. This book is definitely not for those with tender ears/eyes, but there are some redeeming values to learn if you can endure. Although R rated, I give this book a 4. I'm still not convinced that the "drought" was necessary.
I really enjoyed the story line and the characters of this book. Most of the time I wanted to keep reading more, I like the way the story moved around the different plots and characters, it kept just enough suspense to keep reading. My only criticism is the poker scenes were very long and repetitive. I understand the need to create the tension between Willie, Carl and Elizabeth but it could have been done successfully in half the time. I skipped a lot of that. I did understand the ending, seems that others did not although I will not go into it so as to not give it away in any detail as it was not quite what I expected,
It took me a looooong time to read this book, partially because it's a long book (799 pages), but mostly due to a shortage of time to read lately. But no matter what, I kept going back to it. The character development was excellent and I kept wondering where it was all headed. The climax was unexpected and shocking, but the ending left MANY questions unanswered which seemed in direct contrast to such long and detailed stories leading up to it. Even though I wish the book hasn't ended the way it did, I really enjoyed it.
Wow! What a great book! Yes, it is long but that is compensated by great character development and gripping story lines. All the characters interact within their own story lines and then overlap with other characters. It all flows to the jaw dropping surprise ending. Worth the time to read. Thank you to Kindle free books for the chance to try is book. I highly recommend it!
This book was not what I anticipated and the title is a bit misleading; however I thought it was a great read. Parts of the book were a little slow but the character development was in-depth. I was pleasantly surprised by the complex interrelatedness of all the story lines and how it all came together in the end. It was a timely read as my state is currently experiencing a very big drought.
This book is too long at approximately 800 pages (the poker scenes in particular drag on forever) and it has some writing/grammar mistakes peppered throughout but still a worthwhile read. Great character development and gripping finale.
This book was a great read. I thought the poker scenes could have been cut in half and you still would have got what is going on in the story. Great character development and if felt as if I knew all the people personally. I would suggest this book for anyone.
Language is offensives at times. Some parts are excessively long and boring. Poker games very confusing and difficult to follow. Character development is excellent and it is very interesting to see how they are all connected. Overall story is interesting.
This book is so long and so detailed that I can't believe it ended how it did! There are to many unanswered questions for me in this book! It is well written and very well detailed but I can't get over the ending!
Too many grammatical errors, spelling errors, verb tense errors, subject verb agreement errors. If this book had been proofread and edited it might have been good.
This book was a bit of a train wreck. Had to get to the end but, as others said it left you to figure out the meaning. I would not recommend this book.
